Chapter 1
Richard Montague, a rich heir in Durmask, has just posted a new tweet on Twitter. The accompanying photo features a luxurious winery.
The caption reads, "My wife loves this place a lot, so I bought it immediately."
I tap on the photo, soon realizing that this is Amie Winery, the same place that I had briefly mentioned to Richard last week.
Then, I recall the fact that he has told me that he's prepared a surprise anniversary gift for me in a mysterious tone. So, this winery must be the gift!
With a wide smile on my face, I respond to his tweet in the comment section.
But three minutes later, Kiara York, a popular celebrity from the same company that I'm in, quickly proclaims her love for Richard on the Internet.
"Wow, my husband is so generous! I'm very satisfied with this gift!"
All the onlookers and fans begin shipping Kiara and Richard like mad overnight.
"What a sweet relationship! As expected of the rich heir in Durmask! Even the way he announces his relationship is very domineering!"
The whole turn of events leaves me feeling stunned. Once I realize that Kiara is just trying to ride on the coattails of Richard's popularity, I quickly post a picture of my marriage certificate online.
It comes with a caption. "If she's the legitimate wife, then who am I?"
But Kiara soon posts a marriage certificate of her own. To my surprise, there's a photo attached to the certificate. Richard's face is shown in the photo.
Kiara mocks me, "There's a limit to being a lunatic fangirl, you know! Rick and I are husband and wife by law! You can't just slap a Photoshopped picture here and pretend that he's your husband!"
As I stare at both copies of the marriage certificates, which show the courthouse's stamp, I fall in deep contemplation. Then, I look at the place Kiara tagged on her Twitter comment.
Finally, I can't resist calling Richard, who's currently overseas.
"How dare you engage in bigamy behind my back!"
On Twitter, a rich heir in Durmask, Richard Montague, suddenly posted an update with a picture of a top-tier winery. He wrote, "My wife likes it, so I'm buying it right now."
I clicked on the picture and realized it was Amie Winery, the same one I had casually mentioned to him last week. It was the place where Richard and I had held our wedding, and with our eighth anniversary approaching, I had suggested that we revisit the winery. I never expected that he would go ahead and buy it.
I laughed and commented, "Nice. How thoughtful of you!"
The post quickly attracted a lot of attention.
"Huh? Is Madelyn Stone dropping a hint?"
"Is Madelyn his wife? Amie Winery is one of the top ten wineries in the world. Richard is truly indulgent!"
As soon as I posted my comment, netizens began digging through my Twitter, and numerous posts I had made over the years were unearthed.
Soon, the topic of Richard and my marriage shot to the top of the trending list. Just as the attention peaked, one of the recent rising stars, Kiara York, posted a tweet.
"My husband's so generous. I'm super happy."
Looking closer, I saw she had tagged the exact same place—Amie Winery. We had posted similar comments about the same brand.
At that moment, I wasn't the only one confused. Everyone around me was as well.
Realizing that Kiara was riding the wave of the trending topic, I felt my anger surge, and I quickly posted a picture of my marriage certificate.
"If she's the wife, then who am I?" I typed.
Kiara didn't back down. Without missing a beat, she posted her own marriage certificate and photo. Sure enough, the man in the photo was none other than my husband.
She commented sarcastically, "You should know your place before putting on an act like that. I'm legally married to Rick, and this isn't some random photoshopped image! Amie Winery was purchased as a gift for me by my husband. Without a multi-billion-dollar fortune, you can't even dream of acquiring it. How dare you make false claims?"
Looking at the man in the photo, who looked exactly like my husband, I was stunned. I couldn't help but ask her, "Are you sure the man in that photo is the real Richard Montague?"
Kiara didn't hesitate. She bombarded me with responses.
"Do you think I'm blind and can't tell the difference?"
"Let me show you more evidence! I've got the winery acquisition contract!"
I clicked on the photo she sent, and sure enough, it was the acquisition contract for Amie Winery.
Since Richard had been planning a surprise for me, I hadn't had the chance to see the document before. But how did she have it?
Seeing the contract, the netizens who had been rooting for me just moments ago started to turn on me.
"Turns out Kiara is the real wife! No wonder Montague Group cast her as the female lead in their next movie!"
"I just knew the rich heir in Durmask wouldn't go for a small-time actress. Kiara's way more attractive than Madelyn. Hell, even a dog would know who to choose!"
"She tried to ride the hype, but now she's up against the real wife. How shameless!"
I gritted my teeth and carefully compared both marriage certificates. I noticed that Kiara's registration date was August 10th, 2024.
After checking Richard's schedule, I realized that on that day, he was vacationing with me overseas. There was no way he could've come back to marry someone else.
But why did both marriage certificates feature the same man? And how did Kiara get her hands on the contract?
I asked, "Ms. York, I don't know what you've done, but stealing private documents is illegal!"
Furious, she immediately started a live on Twitter.
At that very moment, she was at a high-class event at Amie Winery, wearing an elegant evening gown.
Upon a closer look, I could see the decor and signature murals. It was definitely Amie Winery.
Even more shocking was that the man she was holding on to was my husband, Richard!
Chapter 2
Kiara went off on me.
"Are you seeing this? This is my husband! We're the real couple! And this winery is mine now. Only I get to be here, and anyone else trying to come in will never make it!"
She continued, "I thought you were just some delusional fangirl or another artist from the same company, so I wasn't going to make a big deal out of it. But you dared to slander me! Madelyn, get ready for my lawyer!"
At that moment, I couldn't hear what she was saying. My mind went blank when I saw Richard on Kiara's live stream.
Was it really Richard? Was that really my husband?
What in the world was happening?
Just as I was about to call Richard to figure it out, the trending hashtag #KiaraIsTheRichHeirsWife exploded online.
The tweets not only celebrated Kiara but also mocked and insulted me.
"Madelyn is just some nobody. How dare she latch onto him?"
"How shameless! Does she think a fake marriage certificate can turn her into Mrs. Montague? She really didn't expect the real Mrs. Montague to fight back on a live stream. Haha!"
"Kiara and Madelyn were both going to be on the same travel variety show. Looks like Madelyn's trying to ride the hype, but now she's completely messed it up."
"Why even keep her on the show? The director should have kicked her out. This is so embarrassing."
"Madelyn, you'd better apologize to Kiara and admit you were making things up, or you'll be getting sued!"
I fumed at the sight of all those comments and decided to confront her.
"Who the hell are you? Are you my husband's mistress?"
Even though deep down, I didn't want to believe Richard would cheat, the coincidences were starting to mess with my head.
The marriage certificate, the acquisition contract, the live stream appearance…
I couldn't think of anyone but a mistress pulling this off.
Kiara sent multiple tweets cursing me.
"You're the one who's the mistress! Are you still pretending to be the real deal?"
Then, she tagged the director of the travel show.
"@OwenCairn, you should fire Madelyn. I won't be on the same show with this trash!"
"Didn't Madelyn say the winery is hers? Well, I'm allowing Owen to film the show at Amie Winery. If Madelyn's got the guts, she can show up and see for herself if this is true!"
I was about to post my tweet when, out of nowhere, I was logged out of my Twitter account.
My company had stepped in and locked me out.
My agent immediately started working on damage control.
I called Richard, but it went straight to voicemail.
I tried his assistant, Leslie Wilcox. "Is your boss seeing someone else? Why isn't he answering his phone?"
Leslie responded confidently, "No way, ma'am. I've never seen another woman with him before. He's tied up with a confidential project, so he doesn't have his phone with him."
What a load of crap! He was out there partying with Kiara, laughing it up!
The more I thought about it, the angrier I got, so I hung up the phone in frustration.
There were just so many weird coincidences that it was making me wonder. Could Richard really have been keeping a mistress who was now flaunting their relationship online?
But I couldn't just sit there and wonder. I needed to catch him in the act myself!
Chapter 3
The next day, I arrived at Flocan.
As soon as I got off the plane, I headed straight for Amie Winery.
Once again, my calls to Richard went unanswered. He must still be hanging out with Kiara at the winery!
Sure enough, as soon as I arrived at the entrance, I ran into Kiara.
Behind her was a large group of photographers and staff.
She crossed her arms and sized me up as I approached her. "I didn't expect you to actually show up. Your shamelessness knows no bounds."
I shot her a glance. "Enough talk. Where's Richard? Get him out here, now!"
Kiara's manager, Heather Burke, snorted in disdain. "Kiara's the real Mrs. Montague here. I saw Mr. Montague with her yesterday. I'm not sure how you have the audacity to show up. Even stalkers have more decency than you."
I didn't want to waste time with them. Honestly, I just wanted Richard to explain this to me.
"I don't have time for this. Step aside."
I tried to push through, but Heather blocked my path. "This is Kiara's private winery. You don't have the right to go inside!"
She spread her arms to block me, like some dog fiercely guarding its owner.
"I'm not divorced from Richard yet! This winery is our joint marital property. I have every right to be here!"
Kiara sneered.
"Yesterday you said Richard is your husband, now you're claiming the winery's your property. Are you seriously delusional?"
Other staff members gathered around and began gossiping among themselves.
The travel show's director, Owen Cairn, pulled a contract out and handed it to me.
"Madelyn, due to your poor reputation online, you've been listed as a high-risk individual for our show. We're officially terminating our contract with you. You don't need to be on the show anymore."
Did he just terminate my contract?
Richard had invested in this show. We had kept his involvement a secret to avoid people talking about how I got in through him, but now they wanted to kick me out?
"Mr. Cairn, think carefully before you make such a decision!"
Owen immediately retorted, "Who do you think you are to lecture me? You're just a no-name actress! Mr. Montague is our backer. Banning you would be easy for him!"
I froze, then turned to look at Kiara coldly.
After all, I had never told anyone about Richard's involvement in the show.
The only way Owen could have found out about it was if Kiara had spilled the beans.
I controlled my anger and said in a low voice, "I'm not interested in a show that supports a homewrecker."
"You do love slandering others, don't you? Kiara is the rightful Mrs. Montague. If you offend her, you'll never be able to work in this industry again!"
"Don't tell me what to do!"
As I pushed through the crowd, trying to get inside the winery, a server walked in carrying a bottle of aged red wine.
He respectfully approached Kiara. "Ma'am, here's the wine you requested."
I rushed to stop him. "That's my wine! I stored it here. Why are you taking it? Put it back right now! No one is allowed to touch it!"
That bottle, aptly called "Love 2020", was a commemorative wine Richard and I had custom-made after our wedding at Amie Winery.
We promised we'd come back on our tenth wedding anniversary to open it together as a symbol of our love for each other.
Startled, the server nearly dropped the bottle.
Heather shouted, "What's your problem? Now you're claiming this bottle of wine is yours too? Are you the mistress?"
At Heather's words, the people around us fell silent for a moment, then burst into laughter.
"No way! Someone like her can't possibly be the mistress!"
Kiara smiled. "My husband has better taste than that. If Rick had a mistress, I'd never let her get away with it."
Heather quickly chimed in, "Exactly. A woman like her is probably Mr. Montague's fangirl and stalker. Otherwise, why would she be stalking us here?"
Even as a child, I had never put up with those kinds of insults, so I pulled out my marriage certificate and the invitation to my wedding at Amie Winery.
"Look closely. Richard and I got married here in 2020. The marriage certificate is official! The reason he bought the winery is because this is where we got married! I'm calling the cops to get you intruders out of here!"
Just as I was about to make the call, Heather forcefully shoved me.
She picked up the fallen certificate and studied it closely. "Hmm, this certificate seems…"
Then she burst out laughing.
"It's fake, right? Hahaha! You think a fake certificate is going to fool anyone? How shameless you are! If you really married Mr. Montague, why didn't they cast you as the lead in the next movie?"
Ignoring my shocked expression, Heather tore up the marriage certificate.
"What are you doing?"
"What do you think? Kiara is the real Mrs. Montague. How could I let a cheap mistress like you attach yourself to us? What's Mr. Montague going to think? I'm not letting you hurt Kiara today!"
Kiara smirked. "Nice job, Ms. Burke. I'll tell Rick to promote you to a supervisor at the company."
Heather was excited, saying, "Thank you so much, Mrs. Montague. You can just call me Heather from now on!"
Kiara and I both worked for the same company under Richard's business empire.
But Richard valued employees' competence, not flattery. There was no way he would promote someone for something like this!
Moreover, promotion decisions were made through HR evaluations. He had no time for such things.
Just as I was about to call the cops again, Kiara spoke up.
"Since you say you and Richard got married here, the owner of the winery should be able to recognize you. Let me put an end to your delusions right now."
She made a call, and the former winery owner, Peter Anderson, walked over.
Kiara sized me up and asked, "Peter, do you know this person?"
Peter looked at me with a flicker of shock, then nodded at me.
I smiled. It looked like the truth was going to come to light now!
