Chapter 2
“Borrowing money is such a hassle. Why not just show your face and moan a little? We’ll give you whatever you want!”
The comments grew more and more vulgar as they scrolled by. Some even openly fantasized about their own experiences and feelings.
Others in the comment section expressed concern, wondering whether Darian might mind. After all, I was still his wife in name, officially married to him.
“Mr. Vale, the Saintess’s body really is top-tier. You’re living the dream.”
“Mr. Vale, is it true that a hundred Carnivals really buys a night with her? You’re not joking, right?”
Darian walked right up to the livestream camera.
Back then, everyone in the inner circle knew that the crown prince of the capital, Darian, was born weak and sickly.
The Vale Family spent a fortune just to keep him barely alive.
He finally reached adulthood, but three years ago, a serious illness nearly took his life.
Somehow, the Vale Family got wind of the fact that the Elderglen Saintess could nourish and revitalize a person.
They spared no effort or resources to marry me.
Now, Darian didn’t just look far from sickly, he radiated more vitality than a perfectly healthy man.
"Guaranteed genuine," he said.
The moment those words left his mouth, the comments section erupted.
“I heard one night with the Saintess is better than ten pounds of tonic with no side effects!”
“It feels good and strengthens the body. Mr. Vale, you’re truly generous, what a grand vision!”
Not only did Darian not get angry at these comments, he even read them out loud word by word. As he read them, he mocked me with a smirk.
“At first, yeah, it was for my health. But after doing it so much... it’s whatever. Later on, she was the one begging me. I just obliged.”
I had just come back from making a call and I heard every word of Darian’s contempt and ridicule loud and clear. But I didn’t have time to care about that now.
“Was it you who got the Elderglen people driven out?” I ignored the livestream and questioned Darian directly.
He poured out the tea from his cup and leisurely brewed a new one himself. Without even glancing at me, he replied flatly, "Whether it was or wasn’t—does it matter?"
Just now on the phone, my grandmother told me that the land where the Elderglen people had lived for generations was bought out yesterday.
To protect our ancestral grounds, everyone fought with everything they had.
Many of our clansmen clung to that land even with their last breath.
But in the end, they were all violently driven out.
I knew that Darian was behind all of this. Only he had the power to take such a large stretch of land.
I kowtowed with all my strength, kneeling on the floor, begging him for mercy.
“Darian, I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. I’m not asking you to spare me, but please, please don’t harm Elderglen people!”
Darian didn’t look at me. Instead, he held Liora in his arms, as if saying that he would agree to anything as long as she agreed.
Liora looked at me innocently, blinking her eyes and spoke, “Whitney, what’s wrong? If you need help, I can lend you some of my salary. Although I had 27 dollars deducted from my pay because you said my skirt was too short the other day, I don’t mind. I’m very kind, so I can still lend you money.”
The entire livestream had witnessed me kneeling on the ground, kowtowing and begging.
They also heard what Liora and Darian said.
“So she bullied the poor girl and got her wages docked. What a terrible crime!”
“No wonder the Saintess’s account is slowing down with the Carnival gifts. It turns out she’s out of money.”
“Saintess, don’t beg them, beg me instead. I can give you money and make you feel real good, haha.”
Looking at Darian’s expression, filled with disdain from the start, I knew that there was no point in begging him anymore.
Chapter 3
The assistant stepped forward at this moment and reminded, "Madam, your entire balance has been cleared. If you don't have any more money, someone just hit ninety-nine Carnivals."
I glanced at the screen. Now, at the top of the leaderboard was none other than Darian’s close friend.
He was proudly flaunting it in the livestream chat:
“Don't be too jealous, brothers! I'm getting on the ride first, cheers to pleasure!”
I wiped away my tears and stood up from the floor, trembling.
Then, facing the livestream, I spoke firmly, with neither humility nor fear. "Keep gifting! Tonight until midnight, I’ll fill up the entire Carnival quota myself."
The moment I said that, the comment section in the livestream went completely still for a few seconds.
Not even ten seconds later, the screen exploded again with even more barrage comments flooding in.
“Brothers, did I hear that right? What did she just say?”
“Saintess, you’re pretty, but are you brainless? It’s still a full three hours till midnight, are you sure you can keep up?”
Darian shot me a cold look, his eyes full of warning. "Whitney, your entire account has already been emptied. If you want to go crazy, take it outside. Don’t come here and disrupt the order."
I tugged at the corner of my mouth and forced a faint smile.
"Darian, do you really think that after hundreds of years, the Elderglen people have no savings left?"
Darian scrutinized me for a while, then signaled his assistant to pause the livestream. Now viewers could only leave comments, no more gift-giving.
"Go check. If money starts coming in again, we’ll resume."
I straightened my back, no longer willing to beg in humiliation.
But just then, someone in the livestream commented.
“Mr. Vale, since we can’t send gifts right now, how about showing us more photos of the Saintess to feast our eyes?”
Once that comment appeared, many others followed. Messages flooded in, all demanding that Darian release more photos.
However, Darian remained silent for a long time.
Everyone began to wonder if he was hesitating. After all, she was still his wife in name and things had already gone too far.
Fearing the power of the Vale Family, some tried to smooth things over.
“Since Mr. Vale didn’t reply, that means it’s a no.”
“Calm down. Don’t rush. We’ll get our chance. Once we send more carnivals, we’ll get the photos.”
Just as the comments were gaining traction, Darian’s voice suddenly rang out.
“Play the video. It’s more exciting than photos.”
That single sentence from him stirred a thousand waves.
“However long she spent checking her account, that’s how long the video will be. It’s to prevent certain people from exploiting loopholes and scamming others,” Darian added, stoking the fire and pushing the livestream’s popularity to a new peak.
A video titled “Wedding Night” was played.
The date shown was the night of our marriage.
That night, Darian had ignored my pleas for mercy and kept me entangled until dawn.
That single night drained my vitality, but from then on, his own health improved drastically.
After tasting the benefits, he became addicted, never letting me go again.
I didn’t dare look at the livestream, but the audio from the video was played so loudly that I couldn’t escape it no matter how I tried to hide.
Within less than a minute of the video playing, I already felt utterly hopeless.
The comment section exploded, viewers poured in, numbers climbing rapidly, all gleefully dissecting me, savoring every second.
The flood of vulgar, dehumanizing comments made my knees give out and I collapsed to the ground.
“Darian, I’m begging you! Please don’t play this. I’ll do anything you want!”
It was then that Darian paused the video.
The livestream went wild and people were spamming the chat, demanding to know why it stopped.
Chapter 4
"That's more like it." Darian's cold voice came through.
Just then, the assistant quickly stepped forward and spoke in front of the livestream, “Miss Barren’s account balance has been updated. A large deposit just came through."
Darian frowned and looked at me. "Where did you get the money?"
I sneered and replied coldly, "None of your business."
Liora, nestled in Darian’s arms, seemed to be mocking me for overestimating myself. In a delicate voice, she nudged Darian and said, “Mr. Vale, you better be careful. What if Whitney is using your money?”
While soothing Liora, Darian sneered and warned me coldly, “Whitney, I’ve already filed a notarized declaration. We no longer share any financial ties. If you borrowed money from the bank or anywhere else under my name, I suggest you return it immediately. You won’t be able to touch a cent of the Vale Family’s money. If there’s any illegal borrowing, I’ll personally send you to prison.”
I let out a bitter laugh. So this was the so-called perfect marriage, the so-called true love I had once believed in.
Looking at the two of them in front of me, I replied calmly, “Don’t worry. I don’t want your money.”
The livestream audience was eagerly watching the drama unfold. Some were constantly asking how much money I actually had left.
Darian signaled his assistant to sync my account balance to the stream.
I knew my current balance was enough to sustain a full night of virtual carnivals. That number might be something even Darian had never seen before.
I turned away and began gathering my things, thinking everything was finally coming to an end. Suddenly, Darian’s voice rang out again.
“What's wrong? Are you too embarrassed to face anyone? Are you trying to run away?”
As I wondered why Darian would say such a thing, he signaled his bodyguards to pin me down in front of the livestream.
On the screen, my bank balance displayed a large, glaring zero.
The livestream’s heat surged once again, even higher than when the video was first played.
However, the comments in the livestream were filled with mocking laughter this time.
There were even people specifically applying to join the call.
The mocking voices thundered into my ears like a storm.
“Are you really playing the role of a virtuous woman while being a kept woman? Did you think you were rich earlier, huh?”
“No need to put on such an act to stall for time, it’s so embarrassing.”
*The Elderglen Saintess may not have much, but she sure knows how to attract laughter. This is the loudest laugh I've had this year!”
Liora was laughing so hard that she could barely catch her breath.
She walked up to me, snatched a bracelet off her wrist and threw it on the ground.
The emerald bracelet, in excellent condition, shattered into two pieces on the floor.
This bracelet was the Elderglen heirloom I had received when I married Darian.
Liora had begged Darian for a long time before finally getting the bracelet into her hands.
“Whitney, here’s your bracelet back. Oh no, what a shame. It accidentally got broken.”
“Whitney, I know you won’t blame me. Let me compensate you with some money. After all, money is probably what you need the most right now.”
She stepped on the broken bracelet and pulled out a wad of cash from her wallet, flinging it right at my face.
Liora used a lot of force, so the sharp corners of the bills cut my face.
Seeing me like that only made her laugh even harder, like a flower shaking in the wind.
“Why aren’t you picking it up? Didn’t you say yourself that an Elderglen Saintess shouldn’t be humiliated like this? Then hurry up and pick up the money. You might be able to stop a couple more photos from being sold!”
Darian stood nearby, watching Liora with indulgence.
I feel a dizzy rush to my head. ‘Is there really no way out of this?’
