Chapter 2

I first checked my bank account and confirmed that I had never received any transfers to my card.

As for the wedding photos and videos, they could be deepfakes.

Now that the initiative was in the hands of the other party, I had no idea what precautions to take.

I could only start with the marriage certificate.

It was simple to prove that I was not married. I just needed to go to the Office of Vital Records to get an unmarried certificate.

I decided to get this unmarried certificate first.

When I just went downstairs, I happened to meet my neighbor, Mrs. Catherine Chase, who was about to go upstairs.

At the sight of her, the lingering fear from my previous life invaded my mind, draining all the color from my face.

"Hey, Alicia, why do you look so pale? Haha, you can't be so excited just because your boyfriend is coming, can you?" Catherine greeted me with a smile, her face full of concern.

If I hadn't suffered so much abuse from her in my previous life, how could I have known that this elder who seemed to care about me so much was the nastiest devil in the world?

"I, I'm fine. My boyfriend has something urgent to do and can't come," I hurriedly replied.

"He's not coming?"

Catherine was stunned for a moment with a flicker of surprise in her eyes. She muttered to herself, "He's not coming? Well, the day of the ceremony in our village is coming soon. Never mind. Anyway, it's not important whether he comes or not."

If I had heard her say such weird words in my previous life, I probably wouldn't have taken it to heart.

After all, she was mysterious and liked to say vague words all the time.

But in this life, when I heard what she just said, I only felt cold all over.

I understood that her words were directed at me.

I didn't know what exactly the ceremony held in her village was.

However, I knew they brought most of those pathetic women back to the village before this ceremony.

I remember being forced to participate in the ceremony like a puppet a week after I was taken to the village in my previous life.

I finally realized that no matter whether my boyfriend came or not, she wouldn't let me go.

"Haha, Alicia, since your boyfriend is not coming, I happen to need your help with something. Can you come to my place tomorrow?" said Catherine.

"No!"

I instinctively refused at once.

"Huh?"

I could tell from Catherine's strange look that she didn't expect me to react this way.

I was also aware of my unnatural attitude, so I quickly explained, "Sorry, Mrs. Chase, my boyfriend is not coming today, but he'll come tomorrow, so I don't have time."

"I see."

Catherine said considerately, "Alright. If that's the case, then forget it. Alicia, you are so kind. I believe you'll marry a man of your dreams."

As she spoke, Catherine eyed me with satisfaction.

But her gaze only gave me a creepy feeling.

I hurriedly left after leaving a few words.

It wasn't until I walked out of the community that the horrifying feeling gradually disappeared.

I soon arrived at the Office of Vital Records and got an unmarried certificate.

But I knew this was not enough.

The unmarried certificate could only prove that my marriage to her son, which she declared in my previous life, was totally fabricated.

It couldn't stop her from taking me away by force.

To be on the safe side, I came to my cousin Kelvin, who was a policeman, after a moment of hesitation.

When Kelvin saw me, he asked in amazement, "Alicia, isn't your boyfriend going to your home today? Why are you here?"

"Kelvin, would you do me a favor?" I asked hesitantly.

My rebirth was something too unbelievable.

Kelvin had always been good to me since I was a child, but he never believed in the existence of the paranormal, let alone rebirth.

I took a deep breath, concealed the fact that I was reborn, and made up a reason.

"I heard from people in our community that my neighbor had been spreading rumors that her son and I were married, and she even faked evidence of our marriage, waiting to sabotage my boyfriend's meeting with my family.

"Kelvin, can you pretend to be my boyfriend tomorrow? I'd like to see what tricks they will play."

"What?"

Kelvin said angrily, "Don't worry, I'll be there tomorrow. I want to see who dares to hurt you like this."

"Thank you, Kelvin," I said with gratitude.

When I got home, I told my parents about the situation with the same explanation.

"How can they do this?"

My mother raged, "We treat them with kindness, yet she is spreading rumors about our daughter like this. How can she be so mean?"

"Let me go and ask her what on earth she wants to do!" my father said with a furious face.

I dissuaded the two of them, saying that we had no evidence yet and telling them to wait and see whether our neighbors would come tomorrow.

After my constant persuasion, my parents finally calmed down.

The next day, Kelvin pretended to be my boyfriend and came to my place with gifts.

When he arrived at the door, I could feel an eye staring at us coldly through the peephole in the door of Catherine's house.

Sure enough, less than half an hour after we returned home, there was a knock on the door.

We looked at each other.

Here they came!

Chapter 3

I took a deep breath and opened the door.

The instant the door opened, Catherine barged in with her lame son.

Her son rushed over and slapped me in the face.

I fell to the ground because of his vigorous slap, covering my face in pain.

"What do you want to do?" My parents and Kelvin stepped forward to stop them.

"How do you still have the nerve to ask me what I want to do? It's supposed to be me to ask this!"

Catherine roared, "Alicia, you have already gotten the marriage certificate and held a wedding with my son. How dare you still bring another man home? Do you intend to trick this young man out of a fortune by declaring that you'll marry him?"

"You bitch, are you so eager for a beating from me?"

Her crippled son growled and intended to hit me again, but he was stopped by a punch from Kelvin.

"He punched my son! He punched my son! This bitch seduced another man and let him hit her husband. Have they no shame?"

Catherine screamed, attracting many neighbors around.

Seeing people coming over, Catherine took out a marriage license and a photo album from her bag.

"Look, everyone. Here is the license of her marriage to my son and their wedding photos.

"I still have the video of their wedding on my phone. Her family also received 300,000 dollars as an engagement gift from us.

"Now this bitch has an affair with another man and even brought him home. Neighbors, please help me do justice to this matter!"

The neighbors seemed to be enjoying such a farce and kept flipping through the photo album.

My parents were shivering all over with rage.

I took a deep breath. In my previous life, I hadn't taken any precautions, so I was helpless against slander and fabricated evidence from them.

But in this life, I had already prepared the evidence to prove my innocence.

"Mrs. Chase, look at your son. He is not only a thirty-something man but also a lazy and gluttonous cripple. Even if I were blind, I wouldn't marry such a man, would I?"

I raised my phone and continued, "Didn't you say you transferred 300,000 dollars to us as an engagement gift? There must be a record of the transfer, right?"

I turned on my phone and clicked on the transfer records.

However, the next moment, my face changed drastically. I mumbled in disbelief, "It's, it's impossible. Why did this transfer record suddenly appear?"

I had checked in advance and confirmed that I had not received any transfer.

But at this moment, I saw a transaction showing that the transfer was made four months ago!

The date of the transaction could never be wrong. It couldn't be that they had just transferred the money to me.

"Humph, you've seen the transfer record with your own eyes, haven't you? Do you have any other excuses to justify yourself?" Catherine sneered.

"Alicia's name and face are indeed on the marriage license and wedding photos. There is also a transfer record, so it seems to be true that they're married."

"Their two families are usually on close terms, but I didn't expect that they are already related to each other by marriage. Though Mrs. Chase's son is not young, this girl is already married to him. It's a bit too much for her to have an affair with another man."

"Is there some misunderstanding?"

The neighbors around us kept gossiping about us.

"I don't know how you forged this transfer record, but I have already gotten an unmarried certificate. You could forge the transfer record, but can you fake this certificate?"

I took out the unmarried certificate from my bag.

When I saw its contents, however, I only felt a chill through me.

Yesterday, what I obtained was an unmarried certificate, but by this time, it had turned into a marriage certificate.

It was stated that Alicia Adams and Shane Chase registered their marriage on July 19, 2024.

"It's clearly stated in the marriage certificate that you and my son are married. Can you still deny it now?" said Catherine smugly.

Her son with a limp grabbed me and attempted to drag me away forcibly. I struggled frantically, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't break free from his grip.

My parents and Kelvin hurriedly strode forward to stop him but were blocked by the neighbors watching the fun.
