Chapter 1
My cousin's wife wanted to set up her younger brother, who just got out of prison, with my sister.
My parents refused her, but she still brought the man to my house.
Later, my sister couldn't bear to be harassed and tried to commit suicide.
My relatives and neighbors also accused my parents and made them dare not go out.
After I came back from the mental hospital, I used my dad's phone and sent a message in our family group chat.
"We'll have a family dinner tonight to settle the marriage between them. Everyone remember to come."
A few minutes after the message was sent, my cousin's wife sent a long voice message in reply.
"I'm glad you finally came around. How can we let you treat us to dinner? I'll book a hotel tonight and arrange everything well!"
She thought my parents agreed to marry my sister to her brother and was afraid that we would go back on our word, so she sent the hotel address to the group right away.
"You're all invited to come to Amelia Hotel tonight. I'll treat you all to dinner. Let's discuss the young couple's marriage together!"
I took a look at the address, picked up an extendable baton, and stuffed it into my bag, which startled my sister.
"Forget it, sister. They are a bunch of scumbags. You don't have to mess with them..."
She was forced to take pills to commit suicide only a few days ago and just underwent gastric lavage and treatment in the hospital for several days. So, her face was still pale.
I stroked her cheek and looked at my parents, who also looked miserable.
"They are scumbags, and I am crazy. They have bullied us to the point where we can't even live peacefully. Then, I'll ruin their lives, too!"
It was true. I was really crazy. I had bipolar disorder, which was a mental illness.
My illness relapsed, so my parents sent me to a mental hospital for treatment.
Unexpectedly, my family was cornered during my treatment.
My cousin's wife had a younger brother named Edwin Grady. His ex-wife divorced him because he was a con man. He was released from prison some time ago. So, my cousin's wife started arranging a marriage for him.
Unfortunately, that bastard took an interest in my sister, who graduated from a great university and was pretty and quiet.
My parents refused him, of course. But my cousin's wife brought her brother to my house and stopped my family from calling for help under the pretext of being a guest. Not only did they destroy my home, but they also forced my sister to agree.
"Well, I know young people like you are shy. But love can grow between you two as long as you spend time together."
My father was so angry that he threw the gift my cousin's wife brought out and said sternly, "I won't allow it. Take your gift and get out!"
My cousin's wife looked embarrassed, but her brother, Edwin, stared at my sister with a covetous look. "Paige, I had fun today. See you next time."
Since he took a fancy to my sister, he started to pester her and harass her in various ways.
He would follow her on her way to and from work. He would bring cheap coffee and snacks to her and make sure that her colleagues could see them together. More importantly, he would try to take advantage of her from time to time.
My sister rejected him, "I don't like you, and I will never be with you. Please stop harassing me."
But Edwin seemed not to understand what my sister said and became even more aggressive.
When my parents learned about the situation, they went straight to my cousin and asked him to take care of it.
"Your wife and brother-in-law went too far. Paige has already said that she doesn't like him. We are all relatives, so don't make it too difficult for us. Just tell them to stop harassing my daughter!"
My parents had been good-tempered all their lives. So, these words were quite harsh in their eyes.
However, Edwin took some flowers the next day and went to my sister's company to propose.
"Paige Finn, I like you. Marry me!"
Chapter 2
It was the evening rush hour, and many people were there at the entrance. Some people who were unaware of the situation cheered excitedly.
Without waiting for my sister to answer him, Edwin stuffed the wilted flowers into my sister's arms, held her face, and tried to kiss her.
But my sister pushed him away.
She was furious and scolded him, "I've already told you that I don't like you. How could you not understand what I'm saying?"
The flowers were also thrown at him. Edwin was mad for a moment, but for some reason, he endured it and began to coax her in a low voice.
"You don't like me. Why did you put on such beautiful makeup, wear such beautiful clothes, and ask me to pick you up from get off work? And I bought you all those snacks!"
He went over and took my sister's hand, persuading her, "Paige, be good. I will treat you well. Marry me!"
My sister couldn't win him in the argument and thought he was being shameless.
She put on makeup and dressed up to please herself. Edwin was there with her on her way to and from work because he was stalking her!
But she couldn't win the argument, so she broke free from his hand and cried, telling him to go away.
As a result, someone filmed my sister saying that and posted it online.
People misunderstood the situation and thought my sister was a gold digger who fell in love with someone else for money.
In addition, people with bad intentions also instigated and posted a few ambiguous photos, indicating that Edwin was a great man who delivered meals to Paige, dropped her off at work, and picked her up after work. So, my sister became the shameless one.
Many people left messages online scolding her. Even her boss was annoyed and asked her tactfully, "Why don't you get back with your boyfriend?"
My sister disagreed, so she got fired.
After losing her job, that bastard man didn't let my sister go. He still followed her to our neighborhood.
He couldn't get into our house, so he just waited downstairs.
While my sister was taking out the trash, Edwin took out a speaker and shouted, "Paige Finn, I love you! Please marry me!"
My sister almost threw the garbage at him and yelled at him, "I will never marry you even if I die!"
Edwin didn't leave. He hung a banner in our community and started telling people about him and my sister whenever he saw someone.
"Well, I made my girlfriend mad, so I came here to comfort her. You wanna know who she is? It's Paige Finn. Do you know her? She lives in this building, and she hates me for not being rich. So she wants to be with someone else, but I can forgive her!"
Then, not only my sister but also my parents were criticized.
"They looked so decent. How could they raise such a materialistic daughter?"
My parents went to my cousin's wife to demand an explanation. My cousin's wife asked innocently, "We'll be closer if they get married. Besides, it's normal for young couples to fight. As their family, you shouldn't interfere too much."
She also shared the matter in the family group chat, implying that my parents had failed to educate my sister.
My relatives followed echoed her and advised my parents, "Girls will get married sooner or later. Your elder daughter, Sarah, is already 26 and still not married. Now that Paige finally has a man, why don't you let her get married soon? Are you gonna make her a leftover lady, too?"
My father was so angry that his blood pressure went high, and my mother wept uncontrollably.
After seeing the messages, my sister went into her room silently.
Edwin harassed her with many phone calls, which was just overbearing. So, she took sleeping pills and committed suicide.
Fortunately, my mother noticed my sister's weirdness. She went to comfort her but only to find her unconscious. Then, they rushed her to the hospital.
Although my sister was rescued, she had no desire to live.
When I got home, my sister was there, lifeless.
I had just finished a course of treatment, and the doctor said that my condition had been temporarily stabilized. I returned home in a good mood, only to see my family shrouded in misery.
My sister, who was always quiet and shy, was so thin, and her eyes were red and swollen.
My parents seemed to have aged twenty or thirty years overnight, and their hair had turned much greyer.
They tried to hide it from me at first, but I asked them directly, "I've seen the videos online. Are you still gonna hide it from me?"
When I was discharged from the hospital, I retrieved my phone and personal belongings. So, I saw the proposal video online.
There was also abuse against my sister.
I knew what kind of person my sister was, and I knew my family well.
Seeing that they couldn't hide it from me, my parents told me hesitantly. Recalling what had happened made my sister cry again.
I wiped my sister's face, grabbed my dad's phone, and sent a message in the group chat.
"Okay. You're all bullying us. Let's see what happens next."
"That bastard is deliberately making trouble. I'll just be more shameless than him!" I thought.
Chapter 3
It was already past seven in the evening when we arrived at the hotel.
All our relatives and friends had already been there. My cousin's wife thought we had changed our minds and called us several times to urge us to be quick.
When she saw us, she came up with a fake smile. "Aunt. Uncle. You are finally here. Paige is so pretty today. She and Edwin are such a perfect match!"
I was the last to show up. When my cousin's wife saw me, she also greeted me with a smile, "Welcome back, Sarah. I heard from your dad that you are working in another city."
I had a bipolar disorder attack, and my parents sent me to the hospital for treatment. But for the sake of my reputation, they didn't dare tell anyone that.
People nowadays can be sympathetic to those with physical illnesses. But having a mental illness is a stigma.
She didn't know I was mentally ill. So she came up to us and grabbed my sister's hand. "Come on and take a seat. You're the person of the hour today."
Before she could pull my sister away, I slapped her hand away.
"That's not true. Where is Edwin Grady?"
My cousin's wife looked unhappy being slapped in the hand. Before she could say anything, a male voice was heard,
"Who's looking for me?"
Edwin had a cigarette in his mouth. He looked ordinary but very confident.
He examined my sister first and said, "Hi, Paige. Today is our engagement day. Are you happy?"
When he saw me, his eyes lit up. "Hey, is this your sister? Hello, Sarah. It's nice to see you. Let me introduce myself. My name is Edwin Grady, your brother-in-law."
I stopped my sister, let her stand behind me, and asked him, "So, you harassed my sister?"
Edwin's face changed. "Sarah, how could you slander me like that? Paige and I are in love."
As he spoke, he gestured for someone to press the projection button.
Images appeared on the big screen, all of which were scenes of Edwin unilaterally harassing my sister.
"Paige Finn, I love you so much. Please marry me!"
"Paige, if you didn't like me, why would you dress up on purpose and ask me to pick you up after work?"
Those things bothered my sister and my family a great deal. My sister even tried to commit suicide as a result. But Edwin put them out there, and he felt good about himself.
He claimed it was his way to express love.
Therefore, the scenes of Edwin shouting and harassing my sister were all seen by my relatives present.
My parents were so angry that they were shaking all over. One relative of mine came over and added fuel to the fire. "Oh, they look so much in love. Paige is so lucky. Congratulations."
Without waiting for my parents to say anything, I asked directly, "Do you want such kind of luck?"
The man who spoke froze for a moment. Ignoring him, I looked at Edwin and asked, "You said you were in love. Let me ask you. Did my sister agree to your proposal?"
He immediately argued, "I bought her food, flowers, and pick her up from work..."
Before he could finish his words, I kicked him in the crotch!
Edwin bent over in pain, and I threw him over to the ground!
While he was in a blank, I stepped on him with one foot, pulled out a baton from my bag, and pressed it on his neck.
I refuted word by word, "My sister doesn't need you to buy her food or drinks. She has never accepted your flowers. She also firmly rejected you. As for picking her up after work, Edwin Grady, you think following someone is "picking her up", huh?"
Under my pressure, Edwin began to have trouble breathing. My cousin's wife came over screaming and tried to grab me. But I simply grabbed Edwin with one hand and threw him towards her.
Then, both of them fell on the table together.
The dishes were just served, and we didn't get to eat them. Edwin and his sister had ruined the food already.
My relatives finally came to their senses and came over to stop the fight, but I pulled out the baton and pointed it at them.
"Let's see who dares to stop me!"
