Chapter 1

(Rachael’s POV)

The stench of crushed lavender and heavy musk made my throat burn, but I didn’t dare cough. To choke in the presence of the Lycan royalty was to invite a whip across the shoulders or worse, maybe even a week in the damp, subterranean punishment cells of Hilton Tower.

I stood near the back of the grand hall, my fingers clutching the faded hem of my mother’s old cotton dress. It was three sizes too large, the pale cream fabric worn thin at the elbows, but it was the only piece of her I had left.

"Look at her," a sharp voice hissed from my left.

I didn't need to turn my head to know it was Taria. She glided past me, her body wrapped in a dark silk gown that hugged every curve, her dark hair pinned back with pins made of polished bone.

"Dressing like a servant at the Mating Ceremony, Rachael?" Taria sneered, leaning in close enough for her scent, sour plum and arrogance, to sting my nose. "Then again, I suppose an Omega with no wolf shouldn't waste good silk. You’re only here to pad the numbers so the King can claim his pack is 'united.'"

I kept my eyes fixed on the cold marble floor, swallowing the lump of pride in my throat. Stay invisible. Just survive until the moon reaches its peak.

"Let her be, Taria," a quieter maid murmured nearby, though her eyes held pity rather than true defense.

"Why should I?" Taria laughed, a low, melodic sound meant to carry to the guards standing along the perimeter. "She’s a muted disgrace. If her own wolf won't speak to her, why should any male?"

Before I could sink further into the shadows, the deep, resonant ring of the silver gong echoed through the hall.

The low chatter of hundreds of wolves died instantly. The heavy oak doors at the top of the dais groaned open, and Crown Prince Vinca stepped into the light.

A collective shift in the air rippled through the room. Vinca was built like the ancient war-alphas, broad-shouldered, towering, and radiating a cold, suffocating pressure that forced every wolf to bow their heads. His sharp jawline was set in an unreadable mask, his icy grey eyes sweeping over the rows of waiting females with absolute indifference.

This was the Mating Ceremony. An ancient ritual where the Crown Alpha walked the line of unbonded females, waiting for the ancestral spark of the mate-bond to ignite.

Taria immediately smoothed her silk dress, puffing out her chest as Vinca began his slow descent down the stairs. I watched from beneath my lashes as he passed the high-ranking beta females, barely casting them a glance.

When he reached Taria, she held her breath, her chest practically glowing with anticipation. Vinca paused for a fraction of a second. His eyes swept over her silk gown, but his expression didn't change. There was no flare of scent, no sudden widening of his pupils. No bond.

Taria’s smile faltered, her hands clenching into tight fists as he took another step forward, completely dismissing her.

My heart began to hammer against my ribs. He’s coming toward the back row.

He wasn't supposed to come down here. The Omegas and domestic staff were kept at the rear purely for tradition and technicality. But Vinca kept walking, his heavy leather boots thudding against the marble until he stopped directly in front of me.

Shadows fell over my vision as his towering frame blocked out the chandelier light.

"Look at me, Omega," Vinca commanded. His voice was like a grinding stone.

I slowly lifted my chin, forcing my trembling gaze to meet his.

For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then, Vinca’s brows pulled together into a harsh line. His nostrils flared as he leaned closer, taking a deep, aggressive breath of the air around my collarbone.

A sharp, repulsive energy suddenly flared between us, not the warmth of a mate-bond, but a jarring, unnatural repulsion that made my stomach turn. Vinca recoiled slightly, his hand dropping to the hilt of the silver dagger at his belt, his eyes flashing with sudden, dangerous suspicion.

"What is wrong with your scent?" he growled, stepping closer to grab my jaw. "What are you hiding…"

WAAAAAIL!

An ear-splitting siren shattered the hall, cutting Vinca off mid-sentence. Red emergency runes blazed to life along the stone walls, casting the entire room in a blood-colored light.

Panic erupted instantly. Screams echoed as females scrambled toward the exits and guards drew their broadswords.

"Invasion!" a guard screamed from the upper balcony, his voice cracking with terror. "The northern border wards are down! It’s the Silver Pack! Alpha Bastian is inside the gates!"

Vinca released my jaw, his dark gaze tearing away from me toward the shattered stained-glass windows above.

"Secure the royal family!" Vinca roared, his wolf rising to the surface as long claws extended from his fingertips. "Kill any intruder who crosses the threshold!"

While the crowd surged forward in chaotic waves, pushing and trampling over one another to reach the main hall, I fell back against the cold stone wall, my heart hammering against my ribs.

The Silver Pack with its ruthless war-alpha had just breached our fortress but a sickening wave of relief washed over me. The sirens had saved me from whatever horrific answer Vinca was looking for. But as the crowd surged toward the exits in absolute panic, a chilling thought gripped my chest.

What did Vinca smell on me?

Chapter 2

(Rachael’s POV)

Bodies slammed against me, shoving me sideways into the cold masonry. I didn't stay to see Vinca draw his blade. An unbonded Omega in the middle of a warzone was nothing more than collateral damage.

I slipped past the rushing guards, ducking low into the narrow, dimly lit service passages beneath the grand hall. I knew these hidden hallways like the back of my hand. I had spent years scrubbing their floors.

My boots slapped against the damp stone until I reached a heavy, iron-reinforced hatch hidden in the lower archives. The old supply bunker. It was dark, cold, and smelled of rust, but it was safe.

I yanked the hatch open, slid inside, and pulled the iron door shut, throwing the heavy deadbolt into place.

Silence swallowed me, thick and heavy. I leaned my back against the metal door, sliding down until my knees hit the dirt floor, my lungs heaving as I tried to catch my breath.

Emergency supply crates. Water jugs. Darkness.

"Is... is someone there?" a small, trembling voice squeaked from the corner.

My heart leaped into my throat. "Who's that?"

A tiny figure huddled between two wooden crates shifted forward. It was Tony, a seven-year-old pup from the kitchen staff. He was clutching his left arm to his chest, his face pale and drenched in sweat under the dim light of a single luminescent rune on the wall.

"Rachael?" he sobbed, his voice cracking. "The floor shook... I fell down the stairs trying to run. My arm hurts so bad."

I rushed over to him, dropping to my knees. "Hey, shh, it's okay, Tony. You're safe here."

I gently touched his forearm, and he winced, letting out a sharp cry. Even in the dark, I could see the unnatural angle of his wrist. Broken bone. The shock was already making his small body shiver violently.

"Hold still," I whispered, pulling my mother's ancient journal from the hidden pocket inside my apron.

I didn't have a wolf. I didn't have pack magic to heal wounds with a touch like the higher-ranking alphas. But my mother had taught me the old ways, the ancient herbal channels that relied on the earth rather than wolf essence.

Reaching into my pouch, I pulled out a small piece of dried Moon-Root, pressing it gently against the warm skin of his inner wrist. Closing my eyes, I focused on the faint, flickering spark deep within my chest, the tiny, muted ember of life that the pack thought was useless.

Flow, I commanded silently, visualizing the warm, golden light pushing through my fingertips, through the root, and into his fractured bone.

A soft, golden glow illuminated the small dark bunker, radiating from my palm. Tony gasped as his crying slowed, the sharp pain smoothing out into a soft, numbing warmth. Within seconds, the snap of the bone realigning echoed softly in the quiet room.

"Rachael..." Tony breathed, his wide eyes reflecting the golden light. "Your hands... they're glowing like the moon."

"Don't tell anyone, Tony," I whispered, smiling weakly as the glow faded, leaving me dizzy and lightheaded. "It's our little secret…"

BOOM!

The iron hatch above us shuddered violently. Dust rained down from the ceiling.

Tony shrieked, burying his face into my waist. I threw my arms around him, pulling him behind my back as another thunderous strike shattered the iron lock.

The hatch door tore off its hinges with a horrifying screech of twisting metal, tossed aside like a piece of paper.

Smoke and the sharp scent of ozone poured into the bunker. Standing in the jagged opening above us, framed by the lights of the corridor, was a giant.

He was massive, a wall of broad shoulders, obsidian battle armor, and raw, predatory power. Dark blood splattered his chest plate, and his dark hair was windblown from the chaos above. In his right hand, he held a massive silver broadsword dripping with dark fluid.

Alpha Bastian. The Beast of the North.

His dark eyes swept the pitch-black room with lethal precision, searching for hidden threats. My breath hitched in my throat. I squeezed my eyes shut, holding Tony tight against my chest, waiting for the swing of his blade.

Then, the air in the bunker shifted.

A sudden, overwhelming scent cut through the smell of rust and smoke. A rich dark mahogany, fresh winter rain, and wild mountain air.

My chest caved in as a violent, blinding surge of heat snapped through my veins. It hit me like a physical strike, knocking the air straight out of my lungs. Deep within my soul, where my silent, muted wolf had slumbered my entire life, a deafening, golden roar erupted.

MATE.

The word echoed in my mind, so loud it made my vision blur.

I snapped my eyes open.

Bastian had frozen completely. His heavy broadsword slipped lower, the tip brushing the dirt floor. His chest was heaving, his pupils dilated so wide his eyes looked entirely black.

He took a slow, staggering step down into the bunker. His nostrils flared wildly as he drew in a ragged, desperate breath of the air surrounding me.

The killer in his eyes vanished, replaced by an expression of raw, staggering disbelief.

"You..." his voice was a low, velvet rumble that vibrated straight through the floorboards and into my spine.

He dropped his sword. It hit the dirt with a thud as he reached a gloved hand out toward me, his fingers trembling.

"My true mate."

Chapter 3

(Bastian’s POV)

My wolf was screaming.

It was a wild, deafening howl that tore through my chest, drowning out the alarms, the clashing steel, and the bloodlust that had driven me across the Hilton border. For five brutal years, my wolf had been a silent, cold beast of war, hardened by my father’s murder and the blood of my enemies.

I took another step forward, my heavy combat boots practically sinking into the dirt floor as I reached out toward her.

She was huddled in the dark, her small body trembling against a stack of wooden crates, holding a frightened pup behind her back. She wore a faded, oversized dress that hung off her delicate collarbones. Her dark eyes were wide, glittering with absolute terror, but beneath the fear laid a beauty that made my heart hammer violently against my ribs.

Protect her. Claim her. Tear apart anyone who brought that terror into her eyes.

"Alpha!"

A harsh voice shattered the trance. Beta Silas dropped into the ruined hatchway behind me, his broadsword drawn and his eyes sweeping the dark room for threats. "We’ve breached the lower armory, but King Centauri’s elite guards are falling back toward the central tower. If we push now, we can choke them in the main hall—"

Silas stopped abruptly. His gaze fell on my dropped sword, then drifted to the terrified girl cowering in the corner. His nostrils flared, trying to catch whatever scent had brought me to a dead halt.

I snapped out of the haze, my instincts kicking in like a steel trap. Before Silas could step closer, I moved, placing my massive frame directly between my Beta and my mate, blocking her completely from his sight.

"Stand down, Silas," I growled. My voice was a low, guttural snarl that made the stone walls vibrate.

Silas blinked, stunned. "Sir? The assault…"

"I said stand down," I snapped, turning my head just enough to glare at him with glowing amber eyes. "Order a full retreat. Immediately."

"Retreat?!" Silas’s jaw dropped. "Alpha, we have the upper hand! We broke their northern wards, we’re inside their stronghold! If we pull back now, Centauri will reinforce the perimeter…"

"Are you questioning your Alpha, Beta?" I took a single step toward him, letting the crushing weight of my Alpha aura flood the corridor.

Silas paled, dropping his eyes instantly, his knees buckling under the sheer pressure of my authority. "No, Alpha. Forgive me. I will... I will sound the horn."

"Sound it," I ordered coldly. "Fallback to the southern ridge. Move!"

Silas scrambled backward out of the hatchway, shouting orders into his comm-link as he sprinted down the passage.

I turned back to the dark corner. My heart ached to reach for her, to pull her into my arms, to scent her neck until the smell of Hilton was completely wiped from her skin. But when I took half a step forward, she flinched, pulling the pup tighter into her waist.

She was terrified of me. To her, I was the Northern Monster who had just blown her world apart.

Not yet, my wolf whimpered, fighting against every instinct I possessed. If you force her now, she will hate us.

"I will come back for you," I whispered, keeping my voice soft, letting my mate-bond pulse toward her in a gentle, warm wave to calm her panic. "I promise you, little bird."

I retrieved my broadsword, backed out of the broken hatch, and pulled a heavy iron beam across the entrance to seal her safely inside, away from the retreating crossfire.

(Rachael’s POV)

The heavy iron beam clattered into place above the hatch, sealing us back into the darkness.

My chest rose and fell in jagged, frantic gasps. My skin was still burning where his gaze had swept over me. The gold scent of mahogany and winter rain lingered in the air, so thick I could taste it on my tongue.

My true mate.

The words echoed in my head, terrifying and absurd. Alpha Bastian, the most ruthless warrior in the northern territories was my true mate? I was a muted, packless Omega who spent her days scrubbing floors, and he was a king.

Above us, the sharp, mournful blast of a war horn echoed through the stone structure.

Shouts of confusion echoed through the corridors above as the Silver Pack warriors began a sudden, miraculous withdrawal. Within twenty minutes, the deafening sounds of battle faded into a heavy silence.

"Rachael?" Tony’s small voice broke through my shock. "Did... did the bad man leave?"

"Yes," I whispered, my voice trembling as I stroked his hair. "He left."

Heavy, rhythmic footsteps suddenly echoed down the service passage outside. Before I could move, the iron beam above us was thrown aside with a loud clang.

The hatch swung open, and the harsh, white glare of torchlight flooded the bunker.

Crown Prince Vinca stood at the top of the opening, his dark hair disheveled. Behind him stood six heavily armed guards.

His icy grey eyes scanned the ruined bunker, landing first on the broken lock, then on Tony, and finally settling on me.

Vinca descended the stairs slowly, like a predator stalking cornered prey. He stopped a foot away from me, his jaw clenching as he took in my disheveled state.

"The war horn sounded from right above this sector," Vinca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He reached out with a leather-gloved hand, catching my chin in a tight, bruising grip and forcing my face up. "Bastian had us cornered. He could have taken the Tower today. Yet he called a total retreat from this exact passage."

Vinca’s eyes narrowed into sharp, lethal slits as he leaned down, his nostrils flaring as he sniffed the air around my face.

"Why was the Northern Beast in your hiding spot, Omega?" Vinca hissed, his grip on my jaw tightening until I gasped. "And why do you smell like his scent?"
