The crystal chandeliers cast dancing shadows across the marble floor as I adjusted my stolen silk gloves, my heart hammering against my ribs like a caged bird desperate for freedom. The grand ballroom of the Lycan King's palace stretched before me, a glittering sea of nobility draped in their finest silks and jewels, their laughter echoing off the vaulted ceilings like mockery itself.

I shouldn't be here. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to disappear back into the shadows where discarded Omegas belonged. But the elegant emerald gown I'd "borrowed" from a careless lady's maid, the delicate mask covering half my face—they were my armor tonight. My ticket into the world that had cast me out.

The irony wasn't lost on me that I was celebrating Marcus and Isabella's first wedding anniversary. The same Marcus who had publicly rejected our mate bond exactly thirteen months ago. The same Isabella who had smiled sweetly while her new husband destroyed my family's apothecary and exiled my siblings.

I moved through the crowd like a ghost, catching fragments of conversation about trade agreements and territorial disputes, my eyes constantly scanning for familiar faces. The scent of expensive perfumes and rich foods should have been intoxicating, but all I could smell was the metallic tang of my own fear mixed with determination.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus's voice boomed across the ballroom, and my blood turned to ice. There he was, standing on the raised dais beside the orchestra, his arm wrapped possessively around Isabella's waist. He looked every inch the successful Alpha—broad shoulders filling out his midnight blue jacket, his dark hair perfectly styled, that charming smile that had once made my heart skip beats now making my stomach churn.

"Tonight marks one year since I married the most beautiful, intelligent woman in our realm," he continued, his voice carrying that familiar note of smug satisfaction. "A year since I made the smartest decision of my life—choosing love over the Moon Goddess's outdated concept of predetermined fate."

The crowd murmured appreciatively. Isabella beamed up at him, her diamond tiara catching the light as she pressed closer to his side. They looked perfect together—the ambitious Alpha and the royal princess, a match made for political heaven.

My hands clenched into fists. *Choosing love?* He'd chosen power. He'd chosen status. He'd chosen everything except the mate bond that had burned between us like wildfire.

"My wife has brought nothing but joy and prosperity to our pack," Marcus went on, his voice growing more animated. "Together, we've built something stronger than any mystical bond could ever create. A partnership based on choice, on mutual respect, on—"

"On lies."

The words left my mouth before I could stop them. The ballroom fell silent so quickly I could hear my own heartbeat. Every head turned toward me as I reached up with trembling fingers and pulled off my mask, letting it fall to the marble floor with a soft clatter.

Marcus's face went white, then red, then white again. "You," he breathed, his voice barely audible across the sudden hush.

"Hello, Marcus." I stepped forward, my chin raised despite the way my knees threatened to buckle. "Lovely speech. Though I noticed you forgot to mention how you achieved this perfect marriage—by destroying anyone who stood in your way."

Gasps rippled through the crowd like stones thrown into still water. I could feel hundreds of eyes on me, could hear the whispered questions starting to build like a gathering storm.

"How dare you—" Isabella started, but I cut her off with a laugh that sounded foreign even to my own ears.

"How dare I what? Exist? Survive?" I looked directly at Marcus, letting every ounce of pain and fury I'd carried for thirteen months blaze in my eyes. "You thought you'd buried me along with my family's reputation, didn't you? Thought the little Omega would just disappear and die quietly?"

Marcus stepped forward, his Alpha aura pressing against the room like a suffocating blanket. "You need to leave. Now."

"Oh, I don't think so." My voice carried clearly across the silent ballroom. "You see, I have something to say. Something everyone here should know about the man you're all so eager to celebrate."

I turned to address the crowd, my voice growing stronger with each word. "Since Marcus is so fond of speeches about choice and mutual respect, let me tell you about his choices. Like choosing to reject his fated mate—me—in front of his entire pack. Like choosing to frame my family for selling contaminated herbs to cover up his own supplier's negligence. Like choosing to have my teenage siblings exiled to the borderlands where rogues hunt for sport."

The whispers grew louder. I could see shock, curiosity, and judgment warring on the faces around me. Good. Let them see the truth.

"But you know what?" I smiled, and it felt like baring teeth. "I should thank you, Marcus. Because your betrayal taught me something valuable. It taught me that the Moon Goddess's gifts are wasted on cowards. That some bonds aren't worth the pain they cause."

I paused, letting my gaze sweep across the room until it landed on a figure I'd only seen from a distance before tonight. Daemon Blackthorne, the Lycan King himself, stood near the far wall, his dark eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin prickle. Even from across the room, his presence was magnetic, dangerous, absolutely commanding.

Perfect.

"Which is why," I continued, my voice ringing with newfound confidence, "I would rather warm the Lycan King's bed than be your discarded mate."

The ballroom erupted. Gasps turned to shocked exclamations, then to a roar of scandalized conversation. Isabella's face went purple with rage. Several ladies near me actually swooned.

And Marcus—Marcus looked like I'd slapped him across the face with a silver blade.

"You little—" He lunged toward me, his Alpha instincts taking over, his hands reaching out as if to physically drag me from the room.

But he never reached me.

"That's quite enough." The voice cut through the chaos like a sword through silk, cold and absolutely authoritative. Daemon Blackthorne stepped between Marcus and me with fluid grace, his massive frame blocking Marcus's path entirely. "I believe the lady is my guest this evening."

The King's dark eyes found mine over Marcus's shoulder, and something electric passed between us—challenge, curiosity, and something far more dangerous.

"Control yourself, Alpha Marcus," Daemon continued, his tone carrying the weight of absolute power. "This is my palace, and I will not tolerate such... ungentlemanly behavior toward a lady under my protection."

Marcus's jaw worked soundlessly, his Alpha pride warring with his survival instincts. Challenging the Lycan King in his own palace would be suicide, and we all knew it.

Daemon extended his hand toward me, a slight smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Shall we dance, my dear? I find myself curious about your... perspective on recent events."

I stared at his outstretched hand for a heartbeat, knowing that taking it would change everything. Then I smiled back and placed my fingers in his.

"I thought you'd never ask, Your Majesty."
