Chapter 2

Aurora POV:

Fenton Fields stared at me.

The silence stretched, thin and taut, ready to snap. I held his gaze, my heart hammering against my ribs. I could not, would not, look away. To do so would be to admit defeat.

From the front row, a sharp voice cut through the tension.

"Alpha, she has lost her mind!"

It was Beatrice Fields, Caden's aunt. Her face was a mask of concern, but her eyes glittered with opportunistic malice. "A wolfless girl cannot just make such a demand—"

Fenton did not even glance at her. He simply raised a hand, a small, dismissive gesture that silenced her as effectively as a gag. Beatrice's face flushed blotchy red, and she shrank back into her seat.

His gaze shifted, just for a moment, to his mother. A silent question passed between them.

Augusta gave a slow, almost imperceptible nod. I heard her murmur, her voice low but firm. "The law is the law. She is right. We owe her this."

That was all the approval he needed. The steel returned to his posture. He turned his attention back to the crowd, his voice booming with the authority of a true Alpha, leaving no room for argument.

"She is correct. The honor of House Fields will be upheld."

His eyes found mine again. "Your demand is granted."

A wave of shocked gasps rippled through the audience. I felt a tremor of relief so profound it almost buckled my knees. The first hurdle was cleared.

"Bring Gideon and Jasper forward," Fenton commanded.

A flash of pure, unadulterated joy lit up Beatrice's face. Jasper was her son. If I chose him, her branch of the family would be elevated.

The two young men were both strong and handsome, and most importantly, unbound Alphas. They stepped out from the crowd and ascended the altar. They were the image of high-born wolves, tall, broad-shouldered, with the casual arrogance of those who have never known hardship. They looked at me with a mixture of pity, curiosity, and a faint, insulting hint of disdain.

"They are the finest of this generation, and close to you in age," Fenton said flatly. "Choose."

This was it. The moment everyone expected. The pathetic, wolfless girl, gratefully accepting the scraps from the Alpha's table. Beatrice was practically vibrating with anticipation, her lips parted as if to shout her preferred son's name.

My gaze swept over them. Gideon, the elder, had a warrior's build. Jasper, just a little younger than me, had a gentle smile. Either of them would have been considered a magnificent match for any she-wolf in the territory. A month ago, a week ago, even an hour ago, I would have wept with gratitude for such compensation.

They were strong, yes. But they were useless to me now.

I looked from one to the other, then slowly, deliberately, shook my head.

"No," I said. My voice was quiet, but in the charged silence, everyone in the front row heard it, their expressions turning to confusion.

Beatrice's triumphant smile froze and shattered. Gideon and Jasper stared at me, their handsome faces slack with disbelief. To be publicly refused by a wolfless girl was an insult they had never conceived of.

Fenton's eyebrows rose a fraction of an inch. "Why?"

My gaze traveled past the two stunned young Alphas, past the shocked faces in the crowd. It settled, once and for all, on the one man whose power dwarfed all others.

No maidenly blush touched my cheeks, no hint of romance in my eyes. Only the cold, hard calculus of survival.

"Because Gideon and Jasper together are still not enough to repay what the Fields family owes me," I stated. "I was to be the mate of the future Alpha. The next Luna of the Black Forest Pack."

I met Fenton's stare directly. "To bind myself to either of them would make me the wife of a lesser Alpha. That is not equal compensation."

I held Fenton's gaze unflinching, watching the recognition dawn on his face. He was no longer looking at a victim. He was looking at a wolf who had just grown fangs.

"Since your son is a deserter," I said, each word hanging in the cold air, "then you will complete the transaction."

I raised my hand and extended my index finger, pointing directly at his chest.

"I demand to be the Luna of this territory. I choose you, Alpha Fenton Fields."

Chapter 3

Aurora POV:

My words fell. I heard every guest present draw a sharp breath.

Beatrice staggered backward as if I had struck her. Augusta's dignified composure finally crumbled, her eyes widening with pure shock.

I, Aurora Tanner, the abandoned, wolfless reject, the laughingstock, had just proposed to the undisputed Alpha of the Black Forest Pack. My fiancé's father.

For the first time since the ceremony began, a crack appeared in Fenton Fields' granite composure. In that moment, I saw it. Beneath the cold exterior, beneath the rigid control, a flicker of dark, undeniable excitement passed through his eyes. He had grown weary of obedient she-wolves long ago. The naked ambition in my eyes was a language he understood completely.

Beatrice found her voice first. She let out a shriek.

"This is absurd! She's insulting you, Alpha! She's doing this to get back at Caden!"

Murmurs of agreement rose from the pack elders. This was not merely unconventional. It bordered on sacrilege. It twisted the sacred bonds of family and hierarchy into a farce.

I met the wave of disapproval head on. My voice, when I spoke, was chillingly calm.

"I am not seeking revenge," I said, my gaze locked on Fenton. "I am upholding honor. The failure of the son must be rectified by the father. It is the oldest and most direct of the honor laws."

The argument was sound, at least on the surface. An ancient, rarely invoked law, but law nonetheless. It gave the elders pause, their outrage momentarily checked by their reverence for tradition.

Fenton's expression was unreadable, but I knew he saw the truth in my words.

But he did not know the whole truth. He did not know my real reason. My greatest gamble.

Only few people in the territory knew that story. That story was the basis of the plan now forming in my mind. Years ago, in the Border Wars, Alpha Fenton Fields took a silver blade meant for the old Alpha King. The wound did not kill him, but it severed the connection to his inner wolf. His wolf slept. A deep, unbreakable slumber.

For any other Alpha, it was a fatal defect. He could not feel the pull of a fated mate. He could not complete the final, soul-deep marking bond. He was powerful, yet alone, incapable of the one connection every wolf craved above all else. That very defect had forced him to adopt a son from a cadet branch, Caden, to secure his succession.

For him, it was a flaw. A tragedy.

For me, it was a shield.

A husband who would never find his true love meant I would never be cast aside for her. A mate who could not form the ultimate bond was a mate whose alliance was based on duty. Emotions were fickle. Honor and duty were not. If I played my cards right, if I proved my worth as Luna, this position could be mine for life.

That was my ace in the hole.

Before Fenton could speak, Augusta Fields rose from her seat. She moved with slow, deliberate grace and came to stand beside her son. All eyes turned to her.

She looked not at me, but at Fenton. Her voice was quiet, yet it carried the weight of generations. "Fenton, the girl has a point. Our house owes her the highest form of apology and compensation."

Her eyes softened slightly. "And you have been without a mate for too long. The pack needs a Luna. The Moon Goddess works in mysterious ways. Perhaps this is her way."

Her endorsement meant I had crossed the final hurdle. Her words were, in themselves, the law of the Black Forest Pack.

Fenton looked from his mother's resolute face to mine. He saw the unwavering determination in my eyes. I could see the struggle, curiosity, and admiration on his face.

To refuse me was to admit his family's honor had been damaged beyond repair. It would make them a laughingstock.

To accept me, as absurd as it was, solved every problem. Caden's scandal would be contained. The pack would have its Luna. And his own condition would be neatly managed by a wife who had just declared she wanted him for purely political reasons.

Slowly, deliberately, he nodded.

"So be it," Fenton said. The words were quiet, but they landed with the force of an earthquake.

"Blood union," he commanded the trembling elder.

This was not a standard ceremony. The blood union was ancient, brutal, and unbreakable.

The elder scrambled for a ceremonial dagger. Fenton took it and slashed his palm without flinching. Blood, dark almost to blackness, welled up. He handed the blade to me. I took it, gripping the hilt tightly, and drew the silver edge across my own flesh. The pain was sharp, searing, but it sharpened my resolve.

Fenton seized my bleeding hand. His grip was crushing, nearly splintering bone. As our blood mingled, an overwhelming force erupted from him, suffocating in its intensity. It was not the warm, comforting pull of a fated mate's bond. It was a weight of dominance, an oppressive rule that made the wolves around us instinctively bare their necks. Even without his awakened wolf, his sheer will was monstrous.

"By blood, bound. By duty, sealed," the elder stammered through the ritual words. "I declare the Alpha and Luna of the Black Forest Pack bound as mates."

It was done.

I turned to face the crowd. My eyes found Beatrice immediately. She was no longer sneering. She was staring at me with wide, unguarded eyes, pure dread flickering within them. I did not smile. I held her gaze for three long seconds, as if I could already see the trouble this woman who loved to mock others would cause for me in the future. And my eyes conveyed a clear message to her: your good days are over.

Fenton did not offer his arm to escort me down the aisle like a gentleman. Instead, his broad hand closed around my wrist like a steel trap. He was not guiding me; he was claiming me, pulling me forward like a captured prize.

"Move," he hissed, his breath laced with mint and barely contained violence.

I lifted my chin and matched his long, predatory stride. I was walking into the lion's den, but even so, I made my steps fall like a queen ascending her throne.
