Chapter 3

Sophia Pov

The cool evening air swept through the open window of the private hospital suite, but the room felt suffocatingly hot.

I sat on the edge of the pristine mattress, my fingers tightly gripping the lace of my ruined engagement dress.

Across from me stood Lucas Knight. His imposing, muscular frame cast a long shadow under the dim lights, radiating a quiet, terrifying power that filled every corner of the room.

"What do you mean, you've finally found me?" I breathed, my heart thumping frantically against my ribs.

Before he could answer, the heavy oak door burst open.

A sharp-looking man in a tailored three-piece suit stormed in, clutching a tablet to his chest.

"Lucas, this is madness," the man snapped, ignoring my presence entirely. "The paparazzi photos from the boulevard are already trending globally. The media is calling her your newest woman. The board of directors is breathing down my neck, and they've already launched a full background investigation on Sophia Carter as we speak!"

Lucas didn't even flinch. He didn't look at the man. His piercing silver eyes remained locked onto me, tracking the erratic rise and fall of my chest.

"Calm down, Marcus," Lucas said, his deep baritone dripping with a cool, absolute authority. "It's handled."

"Handled?" Marcus, evidently his high-priced lawyer, ran a stressed hand through his slicked hair.

"She's Ethan Sullivan's freshly discarded fiancée! Partnering with a woman covered in high-society scandal ruins the exact image of corporate stability we need before the Euro-Merger is finalized. The board will veto the entire acquisition if they think you're bringing a liability into the fold!"

"They won't," Lucas countered smoothly, finally turning his head to glance at his lawyer. The icy dominance in his posture made Marcus instantly halt his pacing.

"Because she's not a liability. She's going to be my fiancée."

My jaw dropped. "Your what?"

Lucas ignored my outburst, keeping his gaze on his lawyer. "Leave us, Marcus. Draft the paperwork I requested and ensure the board's investigators find exactly what I want them to find. Nothing more."

Marcus looked like he wanted to argue, but one look at Lucas's hardened expression had him backing out of the room, slamming the door tightly behind him.

The heavy silence returned, thick with an electric tension. Lucas turned back to me, his heavy boots thudding softly against the floor as he closed the distance between us.

He stopped mere inches away. The rich scent of expensive leather, cedar, and raw masculine warmth rolled off him, making my skin prickle with hyper-awareness.

He leaned down, placing his large hands on the mattress on either side of my thighs, effectively trapping me between his arms.

The sudden proximity was intoxicating. I could see the dark, lethal rings around his silver irises.

"Here is the situation, Sophia," he murmured, his breath brushing over my lips, sending a sudden jolt of electricity straight down my spine.

"I am in the middle of closing a multi-billion-dollar international merger. The board of directors consists of old, traditional men. They demand stability before they approve the final shares. They want to see that the Biker King can be tamed by a wife."

"And you think I look like stability?" I scoffed, my voice trembling slightly despite my attempt to sound fierce.

I gestured to my tear-stained face and the dress that still smelled of Ethan's betrayal. "I was just publicly humiliated. My own family kicked me out onto the street."

"You weren't humiliated, you were freed," Lucas corrected, his gaze intense, heavy with a strange protectiveness that confused me.

"A public relationship with me creates the perfect narrative. It proves I'm settling down, and it gives you a shield from the vultures outside."

He stood up straight, reaching into the inside pocket of his leather cut. He pulled out a crisp, folded document and tossed it onto the bedside table.

"Six months," Lucas stated clearly. "That's all I need. A fake engagement, in exchange, I am offering you a luxury penthouse in downtown Los Angeles, ten million dollars deposited into your private account by tomorrow morning, absolute protection from your family and the Sullivans, and any career backing you want to rebuild your life from scratch."

I stared at the paper, then up at him. The sheer volume of wealth and power he was casually throwing around could buy my father's entire logistics company twice over.

It was a lifeline, a golden ticket to make Ethan and Vanessa eat their words, to ensure they could never look down on me again.

But my pride, bruised and battered from the afternoon, screamed in protest.

"No," I said, lifting my chin defiantly.

Lucas raised a dark eyebrow, a flicker of amusement crossing his rugged features.

"No?"

"I am not a piece of property to be bought, Mr. Knight," I said, standing up from the bed to face him directly.

"I just escaped a three-year arrangement where I was used for my family's status and then discarded like trash when I was no longer convenient. I am not jumping into another gold-plated cage just to help your board of directors sleep at night. I refuse your contract."

Turning on my heel, I intended to walk past him toward the door, but the heavy satin hem of my dress caught on my heel. I stumbled backward, my balance completely failing me.

Lucas caught me instantly.

His large, calloused hand clamped firmly around my forearm, while his other arm wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me flush against his hard chest.

The accidental impact sent a fierce, burning spark of fire straight to my core. My hands instinctively landed on his broad shoulders, feeling the rigid, powerful muscle beneath the fabric.

Our breaths mingled in the tight space. I looked up at him, panting, completely trapped by his sudden, overpowering hold.

The sexual tension between us swelled, thick and suffocatingly hot. He didn't let go. His grip was unyielding, yet surprisingly gentle, anchoring me against the storm inside my own head.

"You're stubborn," he whispered, his silver eyes dropping briefly to my lips before locking back onto mine with a predatory intensity.

"I like that. But you don't realize the danger you're in, Sophia. The Sullivans will try to crush your reputation entirely to save their own stock prices by morning. You need a king on your board to survive this."

"I don't need anyone," I lied, trying to ignore the frantic pounding of my heart against his chest.

"Let me go."

Lucas didn't move an inch. Instead, his gaze dropped to the silver necklace resting against my collarbone.

His expression hardened, a deep shadow flickering across his face before vanishing.

"You wouldn't be in a cage, Elena's daughter," he said softly.

The entire world stopped spinning.

The breath froze in my throat. My body went completely rigid in his embrace.

Elena was my late mother's name. She had passed away ten years ago, and my father had systematically erased every single trace of her from our lives, replacing her memories with Helen's cruel presence.

No one in our high-society circles ever mentioned her anymore. To the public, she was a ghost.

"How..." My voice cracked, a sudden, fierce panic gripping my chest. I stared at Lucas, searching his beautiful, lethal face for answers.

"How do you know my mother's name?"

Lucas slowly released his grip on my waist, but he didn't step back.

He raised his hand, his thumb lightly brushing against the edge of the silver crescent moon pendant around my neck.

The intimacy of the gesture made my pulse race, a strange, overwhelming warmth blooming in my chest despite the fear.

He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a gravelly, fierce whisper that vibrated through my entire being.

"Because before she passed, she knew exactly what kind of man your father was. She knew the den of wolves you were growing up in," Lucas said, his silver eyes burning with an intense promise. "I promised your mother I'd protect you."
