Chapter 1 of The Future Alpha King Rejected Me - Then Three More Alphas Called Me Their Mate

Fire tore through the side of my neck the second I stepped past the obsidian altar.

I caught myself on the edge of the ceremonial platform, one hand clamped over my throat. I had come to the Mate Recognition Ceremony for one reason: collect the scholarship certificate that confirmed my final year at Blackthorn Academy, smile for the faculty photographer, and get back to my dorm before my library shift.

Instead, three Alphas broke formation at once.

“Back in line!” Professor Higgins shouted into the microphone.

No one listened.

Cassian Blackwood moved first. The Crown Prince of the Northern Packs had spent his entire life learning how not to react. He could sit through council feasts, combat trials, and public challenges without changing expression.

Now his golden eyes were blown wide.

His head turned toward me as if a hook had caught beneath his ribs.

“Mine.”

The word came out as a growl.

A shocked murmur rolled through the amphitheater.

Rowan Hale gripped the edge of the podium. He was one of Blackthorn’s senior medical-track Alphas, famous for keeping his pulse steady during field surgery. His pulse was not steady now. I could see it beating hard in his throat.

“No,” he said, staring at me. “I feel it too.”

Kieran Vale stumbled back a full step. He looked less hungry than horrified.

“You’re both wrong.” He pressed a fist against his sternum. “She’s mine.”

Five hundred students went silent.

Three of Blackthorn’s highest-ranking Alphas had just reacted to one scholarship Omega.

Me.

I came from a minor border pack with no political weight and no family money. I paid the part of my tuition the scholarship did not cover by working nights in the library and weekends in the academy kitchens. Girls like me did not become royal Lunas. We certainly did not make three elite Alphas lose control in public.

Then the real pain hit.

My knees slammed into the marble.

Heat carved across my collarbone in four separate strokes. I clawed at the collar of my uniform blouse and ripped the top button loose. Four raised lines appeared beneath my skin, bright red and blistering as though an invisible blade had branded me from the inside.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

“Those are mate marks,” someone whispered.

“Four?” another voice answered. “That’s impossible.”

I touched the swollen skin. Each mark pulsed differently. One carried dry heat. One felt like cold metal. One beat with a sharp electric sting.

The fourth felt hollow.

Hungry.

I looked at Cassian, Rowan, and Kieran.

Three Alphas.

Four marks.

Cassian recovered first.

The hunger vanished from his face so quickly I might have imagined it. He straightened the cuffs of his black ceremonial jacket and rebuilt the expression everyone at Blackthorn knew: distant, controlled, royal.

“There has been a mistake,” he announced.

His voice carried through the entire hall.

I lifted my eyes to him.

“I am the future Alpha King,” Cassian continued. “The Moon Goddess does not bind the northern throne to an unconnected scholarship student, much less create a shared claim. The ritual incense is contaminated, or the altar is malfunctioning.”

Rowan stared at him. “An altar does not invent four physical marks.”

Kieran gave a harsh laugh from the edge of the stage. “Then the Goddess made an error.”

My stomach tightened.

Kieran looked at me as though the bond itself offended him.

“My mother destroyed her life for a mate bond,” he said. “I will not do the same. I will not share a mate with three other men, and I will not let biology choose my future.”

His words were ugly, but at least they were honest.

Cassian’s were worse because he delivered them with the calm certainty of a verdict.

“I reject this pairing.”

The crowd erupted.

Professor Higgins went pale. “Your Highness, the marks have already formed. Formal rejection before stabilization could injure her.”

“That is not my problem.”

Something inside me went very still.

Cassian reached for the silver ceremonial dagger at his belt. “If the mark is mine, remove it.”

Rowan stepped between us.

“Put the blade away.”

Cassian’s eyes flashed. “Move.”

“No.” Rowan’s voice stayed quiet. “You are reacting like a wolf cornered in a trap. She is the one bleeding.”

I forced myself upright before either of them could turn me into the object they were fighting over.

My knees shook. I locked them anyway.

Cassian looked at me, probably expecting tears. Maybe pleading. Maybe gratitude that a royal heir had even acknowledged me long enough to reject me.

“Good,” I said.

The microphone on the altar caught the word.

Cassian frowned. “What?”

“I said good.” I lifted my chin, exposing all four raw marks. “Because I didn’t ask for you either.”

The whispers stopped.

Kieran’s mouth actually fell open.

“You reject me?” Cassian asked.

“You threatened to cut a mark out of my neck in front of the entire academy.” I pointed toward the audience. “You don’t get to call yourself my Alpha after that. Keep your crown. Keep your engagement. Keep whatever life you planned before I walked onto this altar.”

A dangerous gold light flared in his eyes.

Rowan took half a step toward me. “Elara, fighting the bond too hard this early can trigger shock. Let me get you to the medical wing.”

“I will go,” I told him. “But not because any of you ordered me to.”

I walked down the marble steps.

Every movement made the marks burn, but I kept my shoulders straight.

Behind me, Cassian said, “Elara. Stop.”

I kept walking.

His boot hit the first stair.

Then another.

I heard the moment control lost to instinct. His measured footsteps turned fast.

The Alpha who had rejected me less than a minute ago was chasing me through the center aisle in front of everyone.

“Elara!”

I shoved open the oak doors and stepped into the winter air.

The fourth mark split open.

Black blood ran down my throat.

And somewhere beyond Blackthorn’s walls, a wolf I had never met howled my name.
