Chapter 5
I was back to our neighborhood.
My neighbor, Trish, was digging the soil in her lawn, wiping away her tears.
I glanced over and saw Fluffy lying there motionless with a bulging belly.
There were dark red blood stains on her body.
I remembered her holding Fluffy the big white cat, before my surgery.
She would smooth Fluffy's fur, who was pregnant and about to give birth, and said happily that she was going to be a grandmother.
But now....
I pulled out a tissue and handed it to her.
Trish couldn't stop crying.
"Fluffy didn't come home last night."
"I got up in the morning, looked around, and saw her on the side of the road..."
She was digging at the soil with great effort, so I squatted down to help.
Fluffy was very close to me, always rubbing against me when I was near.
In my previous life, everyone avoided me, but she wasn't afraid of me.
When I thought of that, tears started to flow.
I had a kind person's heart in my chest.
But still, I wanted to kill the driver.
Then I remembered that Fluffy would always look out for cars before crossing the street.
Trish scattered on the last handful of soil and patted it down to make it firm.
"Rest in peace, little one. Mom will miss you."
There was hatred in her eyes.
"I heard that a car was crashing all over the place yesterday, hitting several stalls."
"I wonder if it's the one. I'm checking the surveillance camera now, see who it was."
I came back home.
Sue was fiddling with her cell phone. When she saw me, she grinned and put the phone down.
"Kate, look at this silly cat."
In the video, Sue's car was parked in the same place.
She knocked on the car window and called Fluffy's name.
Then she threw down a sausage.
Just as Fluffy lowered her head to sniff at it, she stepped on the accelerator...
I grabbed her collar, ready to kill her then and there.
"You loved Fluffy, why did you do this?"
She pulled a switchblade from her pocket and slashed it across my wrist.
I felt the pain as blood dripped onto the floor.
She played with the switchblade, not caring.
"The damn cat always ignored me whenever she saw you."
"She finally paid me some attention. But too late, I didn't want to see her again."
The darkness on her face gave me chills.
My dad was back from work.
When he saw the blood on my hand, he quickly pulled me aside and bandaged the cut.
"What happened?"
My stepmother came out of her room. She looked at Sue's face and took the knife cautiously.
She asked me if I needed to go to the hospital, acting like she cared.
I ignored her and looked up.
"Dad, Sue ran her car into a pregnant cat!"
"She's a monster, I want to move out!"
July disagreed with what I said.
"It's just a cat, not a person."
"You just had surgery, there's no one to take care of you if you move out. I'll ask Sue to apologize. Don't cause more trouble for your father."
Sue ignored her, snorted coldly and went back to her room.
July didn't want to pay for my new place, nor did she want to give me living expenses.
My father paid all the money, and the hearts were available by chance.
Hadn't it been for that, I might not have had a transplant of my own.
But the money was in her hands, and my dad couldn't do anything.
He rubbed my head, looking all helpless.
"July's right. Why don't you..."
Before he could finish his words, there came a string of knocks on the door.
Chapter 6
Trish stood at the door, her eyes bloodshot.
"We live next door to each other. You killed my cat and just act like nothing happened?"
She took out the surveillance video and yelled at my dad, demanding an explanation.
In the footage, my dad's license plate number could be seen clearly.
He and July looked at each other.
They both knew it was Sue.
My father's face turned gloomy. He wanted to get Sue from her room, but my stepmother grabbed him.
"Honey, it's different if it were someone else."
"But Trish's son is a reporter. If he knows Sue did this, and that she has the heart of a murderer, what will happen then?"
My dad obviously didn't think of that.
In my past life, I became very bad-tempered.
I always quarreled with July at home.
She couldn't stand me and deliberately told Trish's son that I had a murderer's heart.
"A murderer's successor", that could be the label.
Everyone I knew avoided me.
My father felt guilty, so he secretly gave me some living expenses.
But July told him that I would have a negative impact on the image of his company.
So he severed all ties with me.
Now, my father was standing there with a worried look on his face.
After a moment, he patted July's hand, signaling her not to worry.
"Trish, I was driving yesterday. I didn't sleep well during the past few days, as the children were having their surgeries, so..."
My dad took out his phone, looking apologetic.
"I'm sorry, just tell me the amount and I'll compensate you."
Trish looked straight at my dad.
"You don't have to take the blame. I know it wasn't you. The person driving the car was wearing a bracelet."
She paused and zoomed in on the footage.
The gold bracelet was shining brightly.
My dad was a man, there was no way he could wear a women's bracelet.
Just as July was about to speak, Trish interrupted her coldly.
"You got your nails painted, so it wasn't you either."
The implication was clear.
It was Sue.
"Let me make it clear. I am not here for any money, I just want an explanation."
"Bow down and apologize to my Fluffy, or it won't end here."
Trish moved the small stool in front of her door over and sat down firmly.
But how could Sue admit her mistake?
July rubbed her hands in frustration, her eyes rolling around.
She pulled me aside as if she had thought of something.
"Kate, don't you have the same bracelet?"
"Help Sue out."
