Chapter 1 of Reborn: Marrying My Cheating Ex's Uncle

—Elara POV:

The icy rain was like needles, piercing my cheeks.

It mingled with the blood seeping from my temple, the rusty, metallic taste spreading across my lips. The rogues surrounding me reeked of decay and filth, a stench so thick it was nearly suffocating. Their wolfish eyes glowed with a murky yellow through the rain.

A claw, caked with grime, tore through the flesh of my thigh.

Agony exploded like a white-hot blaze, nearly dragging me into darkness, but the last threads of my consciousness still clung stubbornly to one thought—how had I ended up in this place?

Seraphina Croft. Julian Thorn's lost love, the woman who had vanished for three years and suddenly returned. She possessed pure Alpha blood.

Julian Thorne—my fiancé, the Alpha whom I've devoted my youth, my family's resources, and even my soul to Alpha.

And I, Elara Vance, was a worthless wolf without a soul.

In a world that revered the wolf spirit above all else, lacking one meant being lesser, meant never truly belonging to the blood-bond of the pack. My father had sought every healer, my mother had wept in the dead of night, and I had tried desperately to prove my worth through other means—studying commerce, managing the family estate, giving everything I had when Julian needed it most.

But after Seraphina returned, everything changed.

She only had to stand there, and Julian's gaze would follow her involuntarily.

Then Seraphina began to weave her web. First the whispers, then the setup—that staged "adultery" scene ruined me, convincing the entire pack of my unfaithfulness. Julian dissolved our engagement in public, shaming my family, turning my father's hair white overnight.

Even then, I naively believed that if I endured long enough, the truth would someday surface.

Not until the rogues Seraphina had sent cornered me in this dark alley did I understand.

Exiled from my pack, stripped of protection, I didn't even have a wolf spirit—I had no means to defend myself. Those lowly rogues cackled as they tore at my flesh, their fangs sinking into my neck, and finally, I understood completely. She had never wanted only Julian. She wanted me erased from this world entirely.

And Julian—the man to whom I had given my youth, my heart, my all—never once looked back.

Regret. Overwhelming, crushing regret.

If I could do it over, I would never trust an Alpha's promises again. I would never give that man everything I had. I would never let myself become Seraphina's prey.

Ridiculous. Only at the brink of death did I finally see clearly.

The rogue bent down, its yellowed fangs nearing my throat. I closed my eyes, despair and hatred tangling into my final awareness.

But in the last faint flicker of my consciousness, a figure pierced through the veil of rain. He was tall, impossibly tall, a silhouette of raw power against the storm-ravaged sky. He moved with the grace of a predator, making the rogues look like clumsy children.

My fading vision focused on his eyes. They were a rare, startling gold, and deep within them, I saw my own broken, bloodied reflection. And something else. A primal, gut-wrenching pain I could not understand. A pain that seemed to mirror my own.

Who…?

I tried to hold on, to see his face, but darkness came like a merciless tide. It pulled me under, and the world dissolved into nothing.

I gasped, my body jolting upright.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, each beat a painful thud. I was breathing in ragged, desperate gulps, the air searing my lungs.

My hands flew over my body, frantically checking. My thigh. My head. My arms.

No wounds. No blood. My skin was smooth, unbroken.

My eyes snapped open, taking in the surroundings. Soft, indirect lighting. Walls adorned with abstract art. A sprawling king-sized bed with sheets of impossibly high thread count.

My breath hitched.

I knew this room. The presidential suite of the Obsidian Grand Hotel. The flagship property of the Thorne Corporation.

My gaze darted to the wall-mounted digital display. The date glowed in crisp, white letters.

October 26th.

A tremor started in my hands, spreading through my entire body. No. It couldn't be. This was the day. The day Seraphina framed me. The day my life began its irreversible descent into hell.

I scrambled out of bed, my legs unsteady, and stumbled towards the full-length mirror in the corner.

The girl who stared back was me, but not the me who died in an alley. This was me at twenty-one. My face was unmarred by scars, my eyes a clear, vibrant green, not clouded by a year of pain and betrayal. My body was whole.

Tears streamed down my face, hot and silent. But as I watched them fall, a new expression twisted my lips. The grief was consumed by a chilling, predatory smile.

I was back.

I had been given a second chance.

And this time, there would be no mercy.

The memories of my past life-my first life-were seared into my brain. The sequence of events was crystal clear. In a few minutes, Seraphina would burst in with Julian and a pack of reporters. They would "discover" me in bed with another man, cementing my reputation as a cheating, worthless fiancée.

The man.

He was a young Omega from a struggling family, drugged and paid by Seraphina. He was supposed to be in the bathroom right now, unconscious.

I walked to the heavy oak door of the master bathroom. I pressed my ear against it.

A faint, suppressed groan.

He was there. My memory was correct.

I didn't open the door. My mind was already racing, pieces clicking into place with cold, swift precision. I snatched my phone from the bedside table. My fingers flew across the screen. In my past life, in a desperate attempt to salvage my reputation, I had memorized the direct line for the hotel's head of security.

The call connected on the second ring.

"Security, Henderson speaking."

"This is Elara Vance," I said, my voice steady, laced with the authority of a Pack Alpha's daughter. "I'm in the presidential suite. I have reason to believe there has been an unauthorized entry into my room and that someone is attempting to tamper with hotel property. I need you to immediately secure all surveillance footage from this floor for the past hour. Lock it down. No one is to access or delete it without my direct authorization. Is that understood?"

There was a brief pause. The weight of the Vance name, combined with the Thorne-owned hotel, was a powerful lever.

"Understood, Ms. Vance. I'll lock it down immediately."

"Good."

I ended the call just as I heard the tell-tale sounds from the hallway. The click-clack of high heels-Seraphina's-and the jumbled, excited footsteps of a group.

They were here.

A cold, sharp smile touched my lips. I walked back to the bed and deliberately tugged the silk strap of my nightgown off one shoulder, exposing the smooth, pale skin beneath. I sat on the edge of the mattress, tousling my long hair to make it look like I'd just been woken from a deep, perhaps passion-filled, sleep.

I composed my face into a mask of drowsy confusion.

The doorknob turned. It stopped. I had locked it from the inside when I woke up. A small detail, but details were everything now.

"Elara?" Seraphina's voice, dripping with fake concern, came through the door. "Are you in there? I heard you weren't feeling well. Julian was so worried about you!"

Then, Julian's voice, laced with its usual impatience. "Seraphina, stop being so dramatic. Just open the door."

The electronic beep of a keycard sliding through the lock was unnaturally loud in the quiet room.

The door swung open.

Seraphina burst in, a coterie of reporters and a few junior members of our Packs trailing behind her. The camera flashes started immediately, a blinding, percussive assault.

She took one look at me on the bed, my shoulder bare, and her hand flew to her mouth. Her eyes, wide and innocent, instantly welled with tears. She pointed a trembling finger at me.

"Elara... you... how could you?" Her voice broke, a perfect performance of a heartbroken friend. "Julian loves you so much!"

Julian's gaze fell on me. His face, which I had once loved more than life itself, hardened into a mask of pure disgust and disappointment. The look was a familiar knife in my gut, but this time, it didn't draw blood. It only fueled the icy fire in my veins.

The flashes continued, a frantic, hungry strobe.

Amidst the chaos, I slowly lifted my head. I met Seraphina's tear-filled eyes, and my own, clear and dry, held no panic. No fear. No shame.
