Chapter 1 of Reborn for Revenge: Married to the Wall Street Tyrant

He was on one knee when the memory hit me.

All of it. In one brutal flash. The burning car. The shattered glass. My own hand reaching through the wreckage—reaching for him, for her—and finding nothing but cold air and the sound of two people choosing not to move.

I blinked it away.

Lucas Hartley was still down there, roses trembling slightly in his grip, six hundred watts of chandeliers turning the ballroom into something out of a magazine. His voice poured through the crowd like warm honey.

"Serena. Marry me. I swear I'll spend the rest of my life making you the happiest woman alive."

The room sighed. Someone started clapping.

He's so convincing. Six months ago, I would have cried. I would have said yes before he finished. I would have believed every word because believing had always been easier than seeing.

But I'd died once. And the dead learn things the living can't.

My gaze found Mia at the edge of the crowd. She stood exactly where she always stood—close enough to matter, far enough to deny. Her smile was perfect. Her posture was perfect. Her eyes glistened with something the whole room would read as happiness for her sister.

Her lips were deep, glossy burgundy.

I looked back at Lucas. At the inside edge of his collar. At the small dark smear against white cotton.

Same shade. Exactly.

Something settled in my chest. Not heartbreak—I was past heartbreak. Just clarity. Cold and clean and absolute.

There you are.

I pulled out my phone and typed to David: Pull the corridor footage from The Lanya. Last night. He had three minutes.

"Lucas." My voice came out even. Quiet. The kind of quiet that makes ballrooms stop. "Our engagement is over."

The room swallowed itself whole.

He blinked. The warm expression cracked—just once, just for a second. "Serena—what—"

He was still kneeling when I crossed to him. His fingers tightened on the roses. The diamond ring nested in the petals caught the light—one wink, two, three—pretty and pointless and exactly the kind of lie I'd spent two years believing.

I grabbed his shirtfront and pulled.

The collar fell open. The burgundy mark bloomed against his throat, stark and wine-dark under six hundred watts of light. The whole room inhaled.

"Before you propose," I said, releasing him, "clean up first." I tilted my head toward Mia. "The color's a match."

"Sisi—" Mia's voice broke on my name. Her nose went pink on command. Her eyes filled the way they always did—never ugly, never messy, just the precise amount of devastation designed to make everyone in the room want to protect her.

She's so good. Four years, and she never slipped once.

I'd given her half of everything I owned when she first came to us. My room, my clothes, my allowance split down the middle. I'd fought with Charles when he wanted to ship her off to boarding school. I'd treated her like the sister I never had.

She'd spent four years sliding a knife between my ribs with a smile on her face.

My phone buzzed. David: Footage ready.

Send it, I typed. All platforms. Anonymous. Now.

"It's wine," Lucas said, finding his feet. "A server bumped into me. You're being—"

Heavy footsteps behind me. Deliberate. Unhurried.

Charles Voss. CEO of Charleaux Corporation. My father by law, by paperwork, by twenty-three years of shared dinners that never felt like family.

His hand landed on my shoulder. "Serena. Take the flowers, put on the ring. We handle this at home."

He hadn't glanced at the mark on Lucas's neck. Hadn't asked a single question.

Of course he hadn't.

Lucas straightened his lapels the moment he had backup. Held the bouquet out again. The diamond winked at me from inside all those red petals—so pretty, so utterly pointless.

I took the bouquet.

I looked him in the eye.

And tore it in half.

Petals fell like something bleeding out. The diamond ring rolled free and came to rest alone on the marble floor—cold, small, and ridiculous.

My phone buzzed again. Once, twice, then a wave. Across the room, phones lit up. I watched it travel like a ripple—one person checking, then five, then a tide.

The video was thirty-one seconds. Hotel corridor, eleven-oh-seven last night. Lucas's arm around Mia's waist, her body folded into his, a door at their backs, a kiss that kept going past the point of deniability.

"That's AI-generated!" Lucas's voice cracked up two registers. "She faked it—she staged this entire—"

Mia covered her face. Her shoulders shook on schedule.

I watched her perform and felt something close to grief—not for her, but for the version of me that had loved her without question.

"Mr. Voss." I turned to Charles. "I know which side you're choosing. You always do." I picked up my clutch. "So let's make it official. As of tonight, I'm severing all ties with Charleaux Corporation. And with you."

"You walk out those doors," he said, voice dropping, "and you're done. No family. No company. No name."

I held his gaze for one breath.

"Good," I said.

I walked.

Lucas called after me—voice climbing, unraveling: "You don't have anyone left! Where are you even going?"

I pushed through the double doors without looking back. Cold corridor air wrapped around me like a first breath after too long underwater.

He's not wrong that I'm alone. The elevator button glowed when I pressed it. But alone isn't finished.

Charles would come for my mother's shares—he'd been circling them for years. He thought cutting me off would make me desperate enough to fold.

He'd never understood me. Not even once.

I had one move left. One name.

Damon Arthur.

The elevator opened. I stepped inside.

The night was only just beginning.
