Chapter 2

Alma Kane POV:

Hayden Harper's gaze was as sharp and clinical as a surgeon's scalpel. There was no morning grogginess in his eyes, no post-coital confusion. He just watched me in deafening silence, assessing me like a strange, unpredictable creature that had foolishly wandered into a top predator's territory. I could feel the terrifyingly powerful aura radiating off him—the oppressive, suffocating presence of an apex alpha that literally made the air in the spacious room feel thin. I forced myself to meet his icy eyes, even though beneath the silk sheets, my palms were slick with cold sweat. I had died once; I couldn't afford to show any fear now.

He sat up fully, the heavy comforter sliding down his waist to reveal a chest and abdomen that looked like they were meticulously carved from solid stone. The sheer, raw physical power of his athletic physique was overwhelmingly intimidating. He didn't speak a word. He just picked up a crisp white dress shirt from the floor and put it on, his movements unhurried, deliberate, and oozing with arrogant confidence.

The silent pressure he exerted was far more torturous than any verbal interrogation. He was waiting for me to speak first, effortlessly holding all the power in the room. "What do you think this is?" Hayden finally asked, his voice breaking the silence. His gaze locked onto mine, unyielding, intense, and stripping me bare.

I pursed my lips, my mind racing at lightspeed through a dozen terrifying scenarios. "A morning-after pill, I suppose?" I said, digging my nails into my palms to keep my voice perfectly steady despite the tremor threatening to expose my panic. "I don't want to take it."

My thoughts were crystal clear, forged in the fires of my past life's agonizing death. Since Anders and Keshia had meticulously plotted for years to destroy me, drain my blood, and steal my mother's legacy, I absolutely refused to play the tragic victim again. I would marry a man so incredibly powerful, so untouchable, that both my despicable father and my cheating fiancé would have to look up to him in absolute, trembling fear. Hayden Harper, the man sitting before me, was the ultimate, perfect weapon.

Hearing my flat, defiant refusal, a complex, dark emotion flashed across Hayden's chiseled face. I assumed he was annoyed by my disobedience, probably thinking I was just another greedy, calculating woman trying to trap a billionaire athlete with a pregnancy. I braced myself, expecting him to argue, yell, or have his security throw me out onto the street.

But before I could utter another word of explanation, he moved with the blinding, terrifying speed of a professional athlete.

His large, calloused hand shot out, gripping my jaw gently but with an iron, inescapable firmness, forcing my mouth open. He popped the small white pill inside, immediately grabbed the glass of ice water from the nightstand, took a swift gulp, and crashed his lips violently onto mine.

I gasped in sheer, electrifying shock, my eyes widening to the size of saucers as the freezing water and the pill slid smoothly down my throat. His tongue swept through my mouth with a dominating, undeniable force, tasting of sharp mint and raw, intoxicating masculinity. The kiss was aggressively possessive yet strangely sensual, plundering my senses and leaving me completely breathless and dizzy. As he finally pulled away, he didn't retreat. Instead, he leaned in and bit down lightly on my sensitive earlobe, his teeth grazing the tender skin.

"Are you planning to go back and fix Anders with the marks I left all over you?" he whispered. His hot, damp breath tickled my neck, but his cold, mocking tone made my blood run cold.

A bold, utterly desperate plan completely solidified in my mind. I looked at him, still feeling the lingering, burning heat of his lips on mine, and nodded without a single ounce of hesitation. "Yes. I am going to humiliate him in front of the entire city. I am here for blood and revenge, and I will tear his perfect life apart piece by piece."

I looked directly into his icy blue eyes, betting my entire second life on this moment. "Marry me, Mr. Harper," I demanded.

The air in the room instantly froze. I saw Hayden Harper's pupils contract in sheer, unfiltered shock. It was the first real flicker of genuine human emotion I had seen on his stoic face. He stared at me, his gaze piercing through my skull, searching my face for any sign that I was playing a stupid joke.

After a few agonizing seconds, he let out a short, harsh laugh, dripping with dark mockery and disdain. "Are you insane? Or is this some creative, new kind of blackmail?"

"I'm not insane, and I'm dead serious," I said, lifting my chin to meet his mocking gaze head-on. "I need an untouchable husband. You need a respectable wife to deal with your current PR crisis and your elite family's pressure. It's a mutually beneficial transaction. We complement each other perfectly."

I took a deep breath, laying my cards on the table. "You're facing a massive PR nightmare after that C-list actress falsely accused you of assault and attempted rape. The NHL is threatening a season-long suspension, and your multi-million dollar sponsors are backing out. You desperately need a stable, high-society marriage to prove to the public and the league that you are a responsible family man, not the violent, uncontrollable monster the media painted you to be. I, on the other hand, need to use your absolute power to enact my revenge."

His expression became an unreadable, stony mask again. He didn't confirm or deny my accurate assessment, just studied me with a new, dangerous intensity. "Give me one good reason to trust you," he said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "What makes a ruined heiress qualified to make a deal with me?"

Faced with his deliberate, overwhelming aura, my mind went completely blank. I racked my brain but could not think of a single tangible asset a powerful, wealthy man like him would want from me. Desperation made me reckless, pushing me to say the most shameless, audacious thing possible.

"My qualification is that we already slept together," I declared, crossing my arms over the duvet to hide my trembling body. "You took my innocence last night, Mr. Harper. So you have to take responsibility for me."

Hayden's expression grew colder by the second, the silence stretching like a taut wire ready to snap and whip us both. My palms grew incredibly sweaty, and my heart hammered violently against my ribs. What if he refused? What if he just laughed at my audacity and threw me out? If he said no, I would have to go through a massive amount of trouble to find another backer before the wedding ceremony started. Would this dangerous, insane gamble actually pay off?

Chapter 3

Hayden Harper POV:

I trapped her between the cold wall and my body, looking down at her. This woman, Alma Kane, was far more interesting and frustrating than I had ever anticipated. The exact moment she spoke those shameless words, demanding I take responsibility for taking her innocence, my traitorous body betrayed me. Her unique, sweet scent mixed with the lingering pheromones of our passionate night hit my heightened senses like a runaway freight train.

I shifted closer, my massive, sculpted frame pressing heavily against hers. The friction of my bare chest against her soft, bruised skin ignited a sudden spark deep within me. I could feel an immediate, undeniable physical reaction rising fiercely within me. I gritted my teeth, my jaw ticking as I ruthlessly suppressed my escalating desire. I couldn't lose control now.

"If it had been another man in this bed last night," I asked, my voice a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated deep through my chest, "would you have proposed to him too?"

She looked up at me, her blue eyes wide but incredibly resolute. "No," she answered, her heart pounding frantically against my ribs. "Because it is you, Hayden. I want to marry you."

I scoffed, a cynical, disbelieving smirk playing on my lips. "What? Did you suddenly stop liking your precious fiancé?"

She shifted uncomfortably, her cheeks flushing a deep, beautiful crimson as she felt the intense heat pooling between us from our extreme physical proximity. "I just... I prefer you like this."

I let out a cold, harsh laugh, clearly not believing a single word of her sweet lies. She was probably just having a massive, relationship-ending fight with that bastard Anders Diaz and was using me to piss him off. But deep down, in the darkest, most hidden corner of my guarded heart, I did not care. She was my sun. She could do whatever she wanted with me, even if it meant taking my damn life.

My mind drifted back to a terrifying hotel fire five years ago. I was trapped in the suffocating, toxic smoke, the intense heat scorching my lungs, fully ready to accept my grim fate. But then, through the roaring flames, a young Alma Kane appeared, risking her own life to drag me, a complete stranger, to safety. Growing up in a fiercely competitive and toxic family where everyone wanted to tear each other apart for inheritance, I had developed heavy defenses and a profound, aching loneliness. I was utterly astonished that someone could be so foolishly brave. That single, heroic moment sparked a lifelong obsession.

I had watched her from afar ever since, slowly captivated by this talented, kind, and resilient girl. I even secretly collected the design sketches she occasionally posted online and had my loyal butler, Bernard, commission them into real, expensive dresses. They hung in my closet, a pathetic, secret way of pretending she was already a part of my dark life.

But last night, when my rival sent her to my room drugged, the fantasy became a fiery reality. I didn't just hold her; I devoured her, claiming every inch of her body until the sun came up, leaving my marks all over her.

Of course, Alma knew none of this. She just kept a polite, almost guilty distance from me, treating me like a convenient business partner rather than a man who had just shared her bed and bared his soul in the dark.

"Get dressed," I ordered abruptly, taking a step back to give myself some much-needed breathing room, though my eyes lingered hungrily on her exposed, bruised collarbone. The sexual tension in the room was thick enough to choke on.

I walked toward the enormous walk-in closet, deliberately leaving the door open. I knew she would follow. Sure enough, a few seconds later, she appeared hesitantly in the doorway. I was choosing a tailored suit, deliberately letting her see the row of exquisite dresses—her dresses.

I grabbed a stunning white lace dress from the rack and tossed it onto the unmade bed. It was made perfectly to her exact measurements, based on a sketchbook I had ordered my men to steal from her months ago.

I watched her reflection closely in the full-length mirror. I fully expected her to be shocked, to instantly recognize her own brilliant work. But to my immense disappointment, her expression remained completely blank. She slipped into the dress without a hint of suspicion or recognition. The white fabric clung to her curves perfectly, highlighting the red marks I had left on her skin.

A bitter taste filled my mouth. She had completely forgotten her own designs, her own passion, probably ground down by years of serving that useless Diaz family. It stung my pride, but perhaps it was for the best. As her husband, I would help her remember who she truly was.

I slowly turned around. As I walked past her, I leaned in and whispered close to her sensitive ear, "I have a lot of secrets, Ms. Kane. Perhaps we can get to know them... after we're legally married."

Her cheeks flushed, and her breathing hitched delightfully. I picked up my car keys and spoke to her, still frozen in place. "Let's go. Any later and we'll have to wait in line at City Hall."

She snapped back to reality and hurried to catch up, her eyes fixed on my back with a complicated expression. I smirked, walking out the door. I couldn't wait to see how she planned to tear her cheating fiancé's world apart.
