Chapter 2

The postpartum care center was suffused with the soothing aroma of lavender and chamomile, a stark contrast to the storm brewing within me. My daughter, nestled peacefully in my arms, was a beacon of calm in the chaos. Unlike other newborns, her cries were infrequent, replaced by a quiet contentment that mirrored my own resolve.

For several days, I had reveled in the gentle care provided by the center. Gone were the nights of interrupted sleep and the constant worry about taking care of a newborn on my own. Here, I could finally heal physically and emotionally.

But my serenity was shattered by the arrival of a most unwelcome duo – Michael and his mother. My mother-in-law, a master manipulator, wasted no time in unleashing her attack.

"Michael, life is impossible now!" she wailed dramatically, collapsing into his arms. Tears, strategically squeezed out, stained her carefully applied mascara. "Two thousand and five hundred dollars! How can you live with such a wasteful woman?"

Michael, usually a picture of apathy, shifted uncomfortably. He had reluctantly agreed to an extra caregiver at the hospital, partly out of concern that his mother would become too tired assisting me with the newborn baby. However, the cost and extended stay at the center clearly rankled him. Eleanor, sensing his doubts, kept whispering venomous words in his ear.

"Other women get by just fine after giving birth," Michael finally blurted out, his voice carrying a hint of accusation. "You're on maternity leave, not making money. I'm the only one working! Do you have any idea what kind of pressure I'm under? You spent two and a half grand just like that!"

His words stung, but it was the blatant disregard for my well-being that truly ignited my fury. "Michael," I countered, my voice laced with steel, "where were you when I was struggling to even get out of bed? Did you take care of me for a single minute? Apparently, giving birth doesn't qualify as work in your eyes!"

"And besides," I continued, pushing myself further upright, "it's my money I'm spending. We have separate accounts. When you spend extravagantly, your mother never bats an eyelid. But when I prioritize my recovery, suddenly it's a crime?"

The color drained from Eleanor's face as I pointed out her hypocrisy. "As a man," I pressed on, my voice rising with each word, "shouldn't you be ashamed? Every decision is dictated by 'my mom says this, my mom says that.' Would you hang yourself if your mother told you to?"

My words hung heavy in the air, a stark challenge to his spineless behavior. "I must have been blind to marry you and have a child for you!" I spat, a lifetime of pent-up frustration finally spilling out. In a fit of anger, I rolled up my sleeves and let out a torrent of expletives I wouldn't have dared to utter before.

The culmination of it all was a single, defiant act – a spit landing squarely on Michael's cheek. The shock on his face was priceless. I had finally reached my breaking point.

Slamming the door shut with a resounding thud, I reveled in the sudden silence. This was my sanctuary and I wouldn't share it with their negativity.

Michael, clearly stunned by my outburst, sputtered incoherently outside the door. Eleanor, ever the opportunist, wasted no time in twisting the situation.

"Michael," she hissed, "look at what kind of wife you have! You're the head of the family, but she treats you like dirt! And on top of it all, she hasn't even given you a son!"

A flicker of shame crossed Michael's face. My outburst had clearly rattled him, but Eleanor, desperate to regain control, continued her tirade. "If it were me," she finished, her voice laced with threat, "I would've found another wife a long time ago!"

Michael clenched his fists, his face a mask of conflicting emotions. But his anger, impotent and misplaced, did little to change the reality of the situation. They could rage and threaten all they wanted, but for the first time, I wouldn't back down. This was my new beginning and I wouldn't let them sabotage it.

Chapter 3

The postpartum care center was a haven. Sunlight streamed through the expansive windows, bathing the room in a warm glow. Every meal was a symphony of flavors, specifically designed to help me regain my strength. The daily massages and postnatal treatments worked wonders and my figure, bloated and worn from childbirth, began to slowly return to its former shape.

For a blissful month, I was free from the constant nagging and negativity of Michael and his mother. They didn't visit once, a fact that initially stung but ultimately solidified my resolution. Their absence was a deafening silence that allowed me to focus on myself and my newborn daughter. My mind was clear. As soon as my confinement period ended, I would be filing for divorce.

But before I could set the wheels in motion, fate, or perhaps Michael's cowardice, intervened.

The day I returned home, armed with a lawyer's contact information and a steely determination, was met with a chilling reality. The house, usually echoing with an unsettling silence, felt different. An unfamiliar feminine scent hung in the air, a cloying sweetness that clung to the furniture and lingered in the hallways.

Eleanor, perched on the couch like a watchful gargoyle, greeted me with a sneer. "Finally decided to grace us with your presence? Enjoying your little spending spree, were you?" Her words dripped with venom, but I held her gaze unflinchingly.

"Just because you can't enjoy life," I retorted, my voice laced with newfound strength, "doesn't mean others can't."

Her wrinkled face contorted with fury, but I ignored her outburst and walked past her, heading towards the nursery to lay my daughter down. Thankfully, she remained oblivious to the brewing drama, sleeping peacefully in her crib.

As I watched her, a tiny human who depended on me completely, my resolve solidified. This toxic marriage wouldn't just hurt me, it would poison her innocent life.

The divorce wouldn't be easy. The apartment, bought after our marriage, was jointly owned and I had consistently contributed to the mortgage. My daughter was still young and while a part of me grieved the absence of a traditional father figure, the reality was that Michael's neglect had already created that void.

Suddenly, a new, unsettling thought struck me. As I opened the closet to change into pajamas, I was overwhelmed by a wave of nausea. The familiar scent of my favorite lavender sleepwear was replaced by a jarring blast of expensive perfume. My gut clenched in unease.

The realization hit me with the force of a tidal wave. Michael, it seemed, wasn't just spineless, he was a cheater. And it appeared he hadn't even bothered to hide it. This woman, whoever she was, had been brazen enough to wear my clothes and sleep in my bed.

Disgust and anger burned in my throat. I ripped the offending garments from my body and tossed them into the trash, the synthetic fabric a mockery of the comfort they once promised. Eleanor, witnessing my silent fury, had the audacity to object.

"Those weren't even ripped! Why waste them?"

"They disgust me," I spat, my voice tight with barely concealed rage.

A closer inspection of the house revealed fleeting signs of the mistress' presence – a different scent of toiletries from the ones Michael, Eleanor, or I usually used and a toothbrush stained with lipstick. Each discovery stoked the fire of my anger, fueling my determination to expose them both.

I turned to Eleanor. "While I was gone," I began, my voice laced with suspicion, "did anyone stay over?"
