Chapter 1 of After I Returned The Real Heiress Everyone Regretted Letting Me Go

The ballroom lights glittered like a thousand lies, and every smile in the room felt sharper than the diamonds around Katherine Hart's neck.

She kept her arm tucked through Soron's, nodding at another wave of congratulations, but her stomach had been twisting for hours. Four years of being the perfect couple, the merger of two empires, the fairy tale everyone envied-and tonight it all felt like glass under pressure. One wrong move and it would shatter.

"If this many people are this excited about the engagement," she said with a quiet laugh as yet another guest drifted away, "we might need to hold the wedding in a stadium."

Soron lifted his champagne glass and took a measured sip. "Your mother would probably agree."

That was him-dry, steady, the man who never wasted words. Katherine had fallen for that quiet strength once. She nudged his arm, teasing. "You should smile more. People keep asking me if I'm forcing you into this."

"I've never enjoyed parties."

"I noticed." She grinned. "Good thing I enjoy them enough for both of us."

Before he could reply, her mother appeared like a force of nature, linking arms with Katherine and smoothing an imaginary wrinkle from her gown. Amelia Hart's smile was camera-ready, as always. "The committee needs one more photo of the happy couple before people start leaving."

Katherine sighed. "I've already smiled for every lens in the city."

"And you'll smile for one more," her mother said, patting her cheek. "This wedding is the event of the year."

Her father, Richard Hart, cut through the crowd a moment later, all business. His eyes barely softened when they landed on her. "Northshore Capital's chairman just arrived. Go greet him. Three months of negotiations riding on this."

Katherine straightened. "On it."

Richard gave Soron a curt nod. "My office tomorrow morning. Merger documents."

"I'll be there."

Just like that, her father was gone, already deep in conversation with an executive. Amelia shook her head fondly. "That man remembers billion-dollar deals but forgets his only daughter is getting married in a month."

Katherine forced a smile. "He has priorities."

For the next half hour they circulated-investors clapping Soron on the back, old family friends reminiscing, elderly donors offering marriage advice that made Katherine want to laugh and scream at the same time. Soron stayed close, polite, silent. Reliable.

Until his phone vibrated.

Something flickered across his face-there and gone so fast she almost missed it. "I need to take this."

She nodded. "We'll be here."

Fifteen minutes crawled by. Then twenty. The photographers were asking for the engaged couple again.

"Darling, go find him," her mother said, a tiny crease between her brows. "They're waiting by the stage."

Katherine slipped away, the music fading behind her as she followed the corridor toward the garden terrace. The cool night air brushed her bare shoulders. She spotted him before he saw her-tall, rigid, phone pressed to his ear.

"...Is the baby alright?"

Her steps faltered.

"No... don't panic. I'm coming now. Stay with her until I get there."

The call ended. Soron stared at his phone as a new message lit the screen. Katherine's eyes locked on the name before it went dark.

Joanna.

Not Joanna Johnson. Not Miss Joanna. Just Joanna. Like she belonged there. Like she was the only one who did.

Her pulse hammered in her ears. Soron had always been obsessive about details-every contact saved with full names, titles, companies. Even after four years, she was still listed as Katherine Hart in his phone. "Keeps things organized," he'd said once, completely serious.

So why was this woman different?

He turned and saw her. For a split second, something raw flashed in his eyes-guilt?-before the familiar mask slid back into place.

"There you are," Katherine said, keeping her voice light even as her throat tightened. "Everyone's looking for us. Another photo op."

Soron studied her for a long, heavy moment. The kind of look that made her want to step back.

"Katherine," he said quietly, "there's something I need to tell you."

The smile on her face froze. The way he said her name... it carried weight. The kind that crushed things.

"What is it?" She laughed softly, trying to push the dread away. "Don't tell me you're dodging the cameras. Mom will kill us both."

"I won't be taking any photographs tonight."

Her laugh faded. "Why not?"

"Because I'm leaving."

The words landed like ice water. She searched his face, waiting for the punchline that never came.

"Is it the call?" she asked. "If it's work, go. I understand-"

"It's not work."

The silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating. He reached into his jacket and pulled out the small velvet box she'd know anywhere-the one from the night he proposed.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

Soron opened it. The slot where her engagement ring had once sat was empty.

"Katherine," he said, voice steady as steel, "I don't think we should get married."

The world tilted. She stared at him, waiting for him to take it back. To say it was stress. Cold feet. Anything.

"...What?"

"I can't marry you."

No hesitation. No softness. Just facts, delivered the way he closed every business deal.

She tried to breathe. "If it's pressure from the companies, we can postpone. We don't have to-"

"It's not the companies."

"Then what is it?" Her voice cracked despite herself.

He exhaled slowly, meeting her eyes. "I've fallen in love with someone else."

The words hit harder than any slap. Katherine's fingers curled around the diamond on the left hand-the ring she'd touched that morning, imagining forever.

"Who?" The question scraped out of her.

Soron didn't flinch. "She's pregnant."

Everything stopped. The distant music, the cool breeze, the beat of her own heart. Pregnant. The baby he'd asked about on the phone. The woman named simply Joanna.

The woman who had taken everything.

Tears burned behind her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. Not here. Not in front of him. Her hand shook as she slid the ring off her finger and dropped it into his waiting palm. His fingers closed around it without touching hers.

"I'm sorry," he said.

Then he turned and walked into the night.

Katherine stood frozen under the terrace lights, the empty space on her finger feeling like a brand. The man she had loved, planned her life around, built dreams with-gone. Just like that.

"Katherine?" A voice called from the hallway. "The photographers are waiting!"

She closed her trembling fist, swallowed the scream rising in her throat, and turned back toward the ballroom. A smile-brittle, practiced, deadly-curved her lips.
