Chapter 4

It was quite strange. Ever since Zoey had appeared in his life, this was the very first time he had shown me any concern.

At 1 a.m., Spencer woke me from my sleep. He burst into the bedroom and pulled me out of bed.

I rubbed my eyes and forced myself to wake up.

“Why aren’t you with Ms. Xander?”

His anger flared.

“Zara, I thought you had changed! It turns out you are still the same as you were before. You’re jealous and cruel!”

The disgust in his eyes cut me deeply.

It did not matter how much I tried; it was never enough to please him.

I clutched his hand. “What happened?”

“You dare to ask?”

He flung my hand away. I stumbled, and my forehead hit the corner of the bed. The pain brought tears to my eyes.

I swallowed back the pain and looked up at him.

“Spencer, I really don’t know what this is about.”

“Still playing dumb?”

He threw a bottle of perfume to the floor. The glass shattered, and the heavy rose scent filled the room until I gagged.

“You knew Zoey was pregnant, yet you still gave her the rose perfume that triggers her allergy!

“What were you trying to do?”

My mind went blank as I stared at the broken glass.

I had never given Zoey a perfume. I had never even bought a perfume in the past few days.

Spencer knew I was allergic to it myself.

If he would only stop to think, he would realize that I could not have bought such a perfume.

But this was about Zoey. His concern for her clouded everything else.

As the perfect partner, I could not expect him to stay rational all the time, especially when it involved the woman he loved.

So, I stayed silent.

A wife who satisfied Spencer would never argue or talk back.

I lowered my eyes, climbed out of bed, and stepped onto the glass.

Blood bloomed from my feet and spread across the carpet.

“Spencer…”

His eyes widened. He grabbed me and put me back on the bed.

“Are you crazy?”

I froze. I thought I had misheard him.

There was a faint tremor in his voice.

I held his hand. “Spencer, it’s my fault.

“I’ll apologize to Ms. Xander. Please don’t be angry.”

The answer I expected never came. He was stunned.

After a long time, he finally looked at me.

His eyes showed confusion, doubt, and then something I could not understand. It was something like panic.

He did not understand why I no longer shouted or fought with him. Why had I become so quiet and obedient that I seemed like a complete stranger?

The more he looked at me, the more panicked he looked. It was as if he were about to lose something precious in his life.

I could not read his thoughts, and even the Perfect Partner System gave me no answers.

Tears filled my eyes as I looked at him in despair.

What could I possibly do to make him happy?

In panic, my hand brushed against the divorce papers I kept under the pillow.

It hit me. It must be because I had not asked for a divorce.

I had not given Spencer and the woman he loved my blessing.

If I showed him the divorce papers, Spencer would finally be happy!

I would please him. I would be the perfect Mrs. Greene.

So, I pulled out the papers I had prepared long ago and handed them to him under his frightened gaze.

“Spencer, I understand now. I will let you go.

“So, let’s get a divorce.”
