Chapter 3
Keith was determined to be with me.
Morris thought that my mother died unexpectedly and my father was an alcoholic and gambler.
I was a trouble and his family had always disagreed with my relationship with Keith.
Keith took me to another city despite his family’s objections.
Morris cut off all Keith’s financial resources just to wait for him to bow his head.
Keith had to help me deal with my difficult father while making a living, often working multiple jobs.
We always stood under the streetlights and looked up at the lights of thousands of homes.
Keith touched my head. “Ruby, believe me, if I didn’t rely on my family, I would buy you a house like this.”
At that time, he always got off work very late and I often waited for him until I fell asleep.
Every night, when he worked overtime, he would bring me the cake from my favorite store and a discounted rose.
I invited him to eat with me, but he always shook his head and said he didn’t like it and turned around to put the rose into the vase we picked together.
In fact, I knew that he was the person who loved sweets the most.
Under this kind of life, the young master who had never touched the housework learned to bargain with the aunties in the vegetable market.
He always held the vegetables in one hand and held my hand with the other. “Ruby, it was awesome! That aunt gave us two garlics.”
Outside the door, Keith and I were busy with the family.
When I opened the door, Coco stretched her back and walked toward us, meowing around the new things she bought.
Keith would skillfully scoop Coco’s poop and then act coquettishly and let me help him tie his apron.
With the roar of the range hood, we and Coco’s meal were served.
Morris finally compromised, perhaps because he was too old, or perhaps because he needed an heir because of terminal cancer.
On the day when Keith was allowed to marry me, he cried in front of me for the second time.
He held the wedding ring and the house deed and knelt on one knee.
“Ruby, I finally got the approval from my parents that you wanted. I want to marry you. I bought all these with the money I earned over the years. My vows were fulfilled at that time. Ruby, will you marry me?”
Coco circled around me excitedly. My eyes were red and I nodded frantically.
The doctor pushed my shoulder and I came to my senses. My physical condition had been getting worse recently.
My heart, digestion and nerves had all had problems.
The doctor said that I was suffering from somatization of anxiety and asked me to find time to relax.
I took a bag of medicine and nodded in agreement.
When I was leaving, I ran into Keith holding Cynthia’s waist. Cynthia called me, “Ruby, why are you here too?”
I turned around and wanted to leave, but Keith snatched the diagnosis from my hand.
“Anxiety disorder? Ruby, why are you pretending?”
Cynthia tugged at the corner of Keith’s clothes. “Ruby, I’m sorry, I didn’t know you called because you fell down because of pregnancy, otherwise I would have let Keith go back and you would have a new child.”
I sneered, “No, we’re getting divorced soon, Cynthia, you can finally take the throne.”
Keith threw my medicine on the ground, clenched his hands so tightly that veins appeared and suppressed his anger.
“Ruby, what are you talking about? Am I told you that Cynthia is just my sister? Besides, Cynthia has a stomachache today. Wouldn’t it make her feel worse if you said that?”
Cynthia fell into Keith’s arms unintentionally, muttering softly, “Keith, I’m fine. Go see Ruby.”
Keith stood in front of me, feeling very oppressive. “Ruby, how long are you going to make a fuss?”
I picked up the medicine and looked at him calmly. “I’m not making a fuss.”
Keith still thought that my proposal for divorce was a new way to attract his attention.
He didn’t even realize that I had moved out long ago when he hadn’t returned home for a long time.
It was ridiculous.
Keith grabbed the medicine I had just picked up and said without question, “I’ll take you home.”
I didn’t say anything, crossed my arms and looked at Cynthia.
Cynthia groaned and looked at Keith with tears in her eyes. “Keith, my stomach hurts.”
Keith looked at me, then at Cynthia. I took the medicine back and turned to leave.
You see, when faced with a conflict, Keith’s balance still leaned toward Cynthia.
Chapter 4
I returned to the familiar downstairs.
It seemed as if my mother’s blood was still spilled under the dim light.
A few years ago, my father passed away unexpectedly and I became the only heir to this room.
The place I once hated had now become my only harbor.
When I turned on the light, the scene of my father beating my mother was still vivid in my mind.
Keith’s voice, hugging me and saying that he would never change, was still echoing.
I shook my head in disgust and felt extremely sick.
I called the lawyer, told him the details and asked him to help me draft a divorce agreement.
The lawyer was very fast and sent me the contract in a short while.
I looked at the contract and felt much more at ease.
Just as I was about to take a shower and go to bed, the phone rang suddenly.
Keith’s voice was a little flustered. “Ruby, come quickly, Archer is not feeling well and wants his mother.”
I jumped out of the bed and rushed to the old house of the Trivett Family. Archer was sitting in Cynthia’s arms and Keith fed dumplings into his mouth.
They were so happy that I looked like the third party.
Archer buried her head in Cynthia’s arms and shouted, “I don’t want her, she’s a big liar!”
I reached out to hug Archer, but Cynthia stopped me. “Ruby, what are you doing here?”
“Archer is sick, I heard he wants his mother.”
Archer made more noise in Cynthia’s arms, almost knocking over the bowl of dumplings in Keith’s hand.
“I don’t want you! You’re a bad guy! You lied! You said you would never lie to me!”
Cynthia smiled. “Ruby, you also saw that Archer is not sick and Archer doesn’t want his mother.”
Keith’s sister sat in the middle of the table and laughed. “Ms. Erickson, you are such a failure, your own son doesn’t want you.”
I almost forgot about this person.
At that time, Morris and others had already shown signs of loosening up and his sister had been whispering in his parents’ ears, so whatever I did would be interpreted maliciously.
His parents hated me even more.
The reason why Keith’s sister hated me was also very simple, just because she simply liked Cynthia and thought that I had taken her position as sister-in-law.
It was ridiculous that someone who had never seen me can had such great malice toward me.
I pulled out a chair and sat at the table, looking straight at Keith. “Keith, didn’t you call and say that Archer was sick and wanted his mother? What’s wrong? Who is lying between you and your mistress?”
Keith’s face was ugly and he threw the bowl on the table. “Ruby, take back what you just said, it’s too harsh to say.”
I turned my eyes to Cynthia. “Using my son as a tool for you to win favor? Can’t you give birth to one yourself? Or is Keith not good enough?”
The two people who were choked by a sentence hesitated to speak and Cynthia’s eyes were covered with a layer of mist.
Looking at Keith through his hair, he looked pitiful.
Keith’s face was gloomy and his hand that was about to slap me was raised high and it fell heavily as if he remembered something and hit the table.
“Ruby, are you jealous? Have you ever taken care of your son? Whose son is this?”
I looked at Archer, who was shaking with fear and patted his head soothingly. Just as I was about to hug him, Cynthia stopped me.
“It’s ridiculous. Your mistress stopped me from touching my son and she also wanted to destroy our mother-son relationship. Why don’t you scold her, but blame me instead?”
Keith smashed the dishes in front of him and roared, “Ruby, get out.”
I spread my hands speechlessly, looked at the crazy man in front of me and turned around to leave.
Keith grabbed my wrist.
“Ruby, did I let you go?”
I thought there was something wrong with my ears and laughed. “Are you sick? You forget it after you say it? If you are sick, go get treatment, don’t disgust me.”
Keith’s sister said, “Ruby, you are really capable. You don’t want the child and the Trivett Family has become a hotel for you. You come and go as you please. Didn’t your dead mother teach you etiquette?”
I clenched my hands and was about to punch her.
Keith spoke before me. “Shut up, do you have the right to speak?”
Everyone was stunned, including me.
I looked at Keith and threw off his shackles.
I reached out and threw all the dishes on the table to the ground, roaring calmly but desperately.
“Since Archer was born, you have not allowed me to see him. Seeing him once is as difficult as ascending to heaven. I have always wanted to be a good daughter-in-law and fulfill my filial piety, but you are pressing me step by step. Everyone is the murderer who drives me crazy.”
I walked toward Keith’s sister with the fragments and she looked at me with horror.
I suddenly scratched her well-maintained face with the fragments.
