Chapter 3
"It doesn't look like me."
"Go back and pack up to find a few broken bowls to beg for food!"
Hearing this, my mother immediately argued with her as if she didn't see me. "What do you mean, sister-in-law?"
"Why are you always so enigmatic for me?"
"Yes, to you!"
I was squeezed into the living room by them and didn't know where to stay for a while.
It wasn't that my aunt's house was dirty and messy. The cement floor downstairs in the countryside and the tile floor upstairs had always been clean, but I had never seen such a floor that was cleaned and waxed.
It was unknown when the two of them had finished arguing and my aunt had left.
"Daddy."
I called the tall man sitting on the sofa.
"Yes," he replied neither coldly nor warmly.
Before I could call her mom, she reached out to hook my collar and pulled me to the back of the sofa and said disgustedly, "You’re from the dirty countryside, so don't sit on my sofa."
This was the first day I came to this strange house.
At first, I thought my mother was just like this.
Grandma told me to forgive her, saying that she just didn't know how to be a mother.
Not long after, she got pregnant and gave birth to my younger sister.
She coaxed her to sleep gently and the water temperature for making milk must be more than 40°. My younger sister didn't wear disposable diapers, but traditional nappies. And she said that only pure cotton diapers could stick to her skin and make her feel comfortable.
After washing up, she had to bask in the sun. When she took the nappy back at night, it would be good when it felt warm.
Only then did I realize that she knew how to be a mother.
But she didn't know how to be my mom.
She felt that washing dishes was very hurtful to her hands.
So, since I came to this house, I had been washing dishes and mopping the floor. When my sister was born, I was the one who washed her nappies.
My mom threw the newly changed nappy into my small washbasin.
"You're quite obedient, and you’re not a freeloader."
I felt a stab of pain in my heart. In the past, no matter how much my aunt disliked me, she had never said that I lived off of nothing at home.
"Mom, this is my basin."
"So what? Can't we use it?" She took it for granted.
She completely forgot that when she and my dad bathed my sister last night, she told my dad carefully, "Children are very delicate, so the small basin for washing butts can't be used to wash their faces. The small basin for bathing is only for bathing. If you want to wash clothes and your smelly socks, be careful and don't use the baby’s!"
My sister was very good at acting cute, but in fact, she was not very obedient.
Every summer and winter vacation, she would postpone her homework and finish it until the last day.
I was often asked to help her do her homework.
I was seven years older than her. When she was in the third grade of primary school, I was already in my first year of high school.
There was a lot of pressure in high school. At that time, the pressure had not yet been reduced for the students. Everyone felt the peer pressure, and the students of the key schools had even greater pressure.
We had almost no winter or summer vacation.
"All these years, in order to curry favor with them, to rank, to win the bonus and use less of their money.
In every exam, I strived for the first place.
I held the prize money for the first place. When I took the certificate home, she always took the prize money lightly and said perfunctorily, "Not bad."
I had an appendicitis during my second year of high school, and my face was pale with pain.
My teacher was so scared that she called home again and again.
Chapter 4
When ambulance car arrived, Mr. Yates came to find me awkwardly. "Hello Queenie Russell, your parents' phone can't get through. Is there anyone else in your family who we can contact?"
I blurted out a string of numbers. Then, I lay there in a daze, watching the doctor put my body on the stage as if my soul had left my body.
Until an old voice came from the teacher's phone, "Hello?"
I felt my soul being pulled back to my body.
I tried her best to hold back my tears and said, "Grandma!"
As soon as she heard that, she panicked.
"What's wrong with you, my baby? Who hurt you?"
She arrived at the hospital in a state of chaos.
Behind Grandma was my aunt, who looked indifferently.
Both of them had aged a lot, especially my grandma. She seemed to have changed into another person, and she had lost a lot of weight.
After Aunt sent me home, Grandma felt suffocated and ran out to pick up the garbage.
She wouldn't listen to anyone.
My aunt was also angry, she looked at me as if I was invisible.
Every answer from the call she made was "good!" "Very good!" "You don't have to worry about it!"
She paid the medical expenses for me, and her grandmother insisted on giving her money. However, she pushed the money away and said rudely, "You know how much I've given you! I don’t care about this little money at all!"
"Don't worry about me. Don't say that I was too angry and died because of me one day!"
Seeing that I was fine after the operation, she turned around and was about to leave.
When she went out, she bumped into my late parents.
"I was wondering who it was. It turns out to be the couple celebrating the Princess' birthday?"
"Oh, my memory is so poor. The celebration party was hold for the top ten children of the ordinary class. In my opinion, There’s no need since it's not the top ten in the city."
After the operation, I felt cold all over. Then I remembered my teacher's embarrassed and sympathetic expression when he told me that I couldn't get in touch with my parents.
So it wasn't that he couldn't get in touch with them, but that I wasn't important.
My mother argued in the corridor until the three of them were driven out by the nurses.
After a while, my mother returned to the ward alone and looked at me with hatred in her eyes. "Why did you have to have an accident last night? Don't you know that your sister has been looking forward to Disneyland for a long time?"
Grandma let out a long sigh and secretly gave me a sum of money before she left.
One dolor, two dollars, they were exactly 1,808 dollars in total.
This was all her money.
Not long after,
My mom found out that my dad had cheated on her.
I received a call from them during the mock exam.
They asked me to go back.
I told them that this simulated exam was very important, and if my grades could still be in the top three in the city, I could be recommend for admission to school.
But she said to me on the phone, "Why are you so cold-blooded? Your father and I are about to divorce, and why you are still thinking about yourself."
When the others were divorced, they would be fighting for the custody of the children. If there was a stalemate, the children could choose who they were willing to follow.
However, the two of them were the opposite.
They didn't want me, and they only wanted my sister.
They told me to choose who I want to follow when I got back.
I gave up the exam and listened to their argument at home. One of them accused me of being a disgrace to her.
The other said that I wouldn’t be close to them and was as cold-blooded ungrateful person like them.
I felt a chill run down my spine as I watched the two of them argue, then I interrupted them loudly, " Why did you call me back since neither of you want me? It’s ok when you don’t want me, anyway, it's not the first time that you don't want me!"
