Our Nursery Belonged to His First Love Summary

For four years, I poured myself into Carter Vale's rise, only to watch him hand our home—the nursery I painted, our anniversary—to his injured first love. When Sienna frames me and Carter orders the Moon Blood draw despite my pregnancy, our child is lost. I rebuild alone, launching an athlete-nutrition platform that catches the eye of Evan Brooks, the rival Alpha who values me openly. Chapter 1 of Our Nursery Belonged to His First Love

I was nineteen when I folded my college acceptance letter into Carter Vale's rookie duffel and followed him across the country.

I learned to tape his shoulder, plan every meal, pack every road bag, and smile through every Pack dinner.

Four years later, he was the league's star captain and the next Alpha.

He told everyone I was the reason he survived his worst season.

He promised that once he wore the captain's C, we would finally build a family.

So I painted the spare room silver, assembled a crib, and hid a positive pregnancy test in my pocket.

Then Sienna Cross came home injured.

Carter carried her suitcase into our bedroom before he even kissed me hello.

He moved my clothes downstairs.

He ordered the crib removed so her rehabilitation equipment would fit.

“Where is Lena supposed to sleep?”

“The guest room.”

“And the nursery?”

“Clear it. You need it more than a baby we may never have.”

Carter heaved Sienna’s white leather suitcase onto the center of our mattress. My fingers dug into the plastic stick hidden inside my cardigan pocket. Two red lines. I had not even shown him yet.

"Sienna is going to have muscle spasms at night after the surgery," Carter said, pulling my sweaters from the widest closet shelf and tossing them onto the armchair. "I need to be close by. You take the downstairs guest room starting tonight."

Four years ago, at nineteen, I folded my Lakeview State University sports nutrition acceptance letter into his rookie duffel bag and followed him to a cramped apartment with a single folding bed. I iced his joints, weighed his proteins, and memorized every Pack elder’s name for the gala so the future Alpha would look flawless. Now, he wore the captain’s ‘C’ on his jersey, reporters camped past our gates, and he was clearing out my half of the closet.

"You are giving her our room?" I asked, keeping my voice steady.

"I copied the master access card for her." He did not look at me, busy arranging her expensive silk robes where my clothes used to hang. "You are still on her meals, medication schedule, and night calls."

My jaw tightened. "So I sleep downstairs, but I remain on call like hotel staff."

"Do not start, Lena. She needs help."

I turned away and headed downstairs to the kitchen. Pulling the printed recovery schedule from my folder, I waited until Carter followed me down a few minutes later.

"The first-floor study is closer to the physical therapy room," I said, sliding the paper across the marble kitchen island. "She would not have to navigate the stairs, and we would not have to uproot the master bedroom. It makes logistical sense."

Carter barely glanced at the paper before slapping his palm flat over it. "You aren't a doctor."

I stared at his heavy hand pinning down my work. During his rookie season, when his torn shoulder nearly ended his career, he relied entirely on my blue notebook. I tracked every pill, every meal, every wince of pain to get him ready for the playoffs. Now, my schedules were just trash to him.

A heavy thud echoed from the hallway. Sienna dragged her metal leg brace across the hardwood, stopping near the end of the corridor. She peered into the silver-gray room. The nursery.

"Carter?" she called out softly. "I do not think I can manage the stairs multiple times a day."

Carter turned his back to me. "Hey!" he shouted to the movers hauling boxes through the foyer. "Take the rocking chair and the crib out of there. Break it down if you have to."

I stepped around the island, blocking his path. "Wait. What about the room? We promised to keep that for the baby."

"We can redecorate when you're actually pregnant," he shot back, his tone sharp and dismissive.

The movers pushed past me, carrying the mahogany crib rails. One of them bumped the nursery dresser. A drawer slid open, spilling a thick, unopened envelope onto the rug. Lakeview State University Admissions.

Carter looked down at it, his expression hardening. "Giving up school was your decision. Do not use it to settle scores every time we argue."

I did not answer. I just watched the mover unscrew the star-shaped nightlight from the wall.

Sienna bent awkwardly, reaching under the bottom shelf of the open cabinet. She pulled out a faded Polaroid. It was her, wearing a silver figure-skating dress, leaning her head against a younger Carter’s shoulder. It was the only item in his rookie bag he had forbidden me from throwing away.

She looked up at the ceiling, tracing the painted silver stars. "Lena painted the room the exact color of my old competition dress."

Carter stepped closer to her, his voice dropping into a softer register. "I always remembered."

I retreated to the kitchen. The small velvet gift box sat on the counter, waiting for dinner. I planned to put the positive test inside. Instead, I stood in the shadow of the hallway, listening to the echo of their voices.

"Where will Lena sleep?" Sienna asked.

"Guest room," Carter replied.

"What about the nursery? Are you sure about this?"

Carter did not bother lowering his voice. "Cleared out. You need it more than a baby we might never have."

I did not push the door open. I did not cry.

I walked down the hall to the guest room and shut the door. A cardboard box sat in the corner, holding the few items the movers had haphazardly dumped from my side of the bedroom. I dug to the very bottom and pulled out the old blue notebook.

Opening the front cover, I took the college acceptance letter and tucked it inside. Then I pulled the pregnancy test from my pocket and placed it right next to the letter. Two red lines. Proof of a future he just erased.

I pulled out my phone and opened the social media app. I registered a new account, ignoring the Pack server entirely.

Username: Second Shift Fuel.

Name: Lena Hart.

I flipped open the blue notebook to the middle pages. I typed out the exact recovery meal plan that saved Carter's rookie season. I deleted his name. I deleted the team name. I stripped away every trace of the Alpha who threw me away.

Under the bio section, I typed a single line: For those holding up the season outside the spotlight.

My first post was not inspirational. It was practical: a recovery-day meal schedule, hydration timing, and the exact warning signs that meant an athlete needed a trainer instead of another supplement. For the first time, the work existed without Carter's name covering mine.

I hit publish.

I sat on the edge of the bare mattress, staring at the screen. Less than a minute passed.

A notification pinged.

An anonymous account named Gate31 had sent a direct message.

"This plan saved a captain, why did no one ever know you wrote it?"
