Chapter 1 of One Hundred Letters After His Wife Died

I died on a rain-soaked Tuesday while my husband and son had my number blocked.

Sixteen years earlier, Julian Cross promised I would never carry our family alone.

When a forged company loan threatened to send him to court, I sold my mother's lake house and handed the bank $286,000.

When someone marked Ethan's school photo with a red cross, I spent twenty-one days driving him everywhere.

They called it control.

From my hospital bed, I learned Julian's first love, Lila Vale, had returned.

Ethan had transferred schools without telling me.

My fourteen calls went straight to voicemail.

Then my damaged car went through a bridge rail, and the river gave the police only my wedding ring.

From a federal safe room, I played the last voicemail they never meant me to hear.

“Did Mom find out Lila came home?”

“No.”

“What about my transfer?”

“She doesn't need to know.”

“Then block her until she stops controlling us.”

"Is that your ring?" Nora pointed a pen at the flat-screen monitor mounted to the concrete wall.

I kept my eyes locked on the live news feed. A police crane groaned over the muddy riverbank, hoisting the crushed remains of my silver sedan out of the water. The roof was caved in, the windshield completely gone. The camera zoomed in on a detective standing on the dock. He held up a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside rested a scratched platinum band.

Julian stood next to him. My husband of twenty years pressed a hand over his mouth, his shoulders shaking. He nodded once to the detective.

"He just confirmed my death," I said. My voice sounded hollow, scraping against the walls of the federal safe room.

"Good," Nora replied, tapping her pen against her clipboard. "That makes the next phase much cleaner."

I watched Julian bury his face in his hands. A perfect performance of grief. The news ticker at the bottom of the screen read: TRAGIC ACCIDENT CLAIMS LOCAL WOMAN.

"He looks completely destroyed," I noted.

"He's a very good actor," Nora said. "Are you going to defend him again, Mara? Even now?"

I turned away from the screen, resting my hands flat on the cold steel table. "Eight years ago, I sold my mother's lake house. It was the only thing I had left of her. I handed him a cashier's check for two hundred eighty-six thousand dollars to pay off the corporate loan he forged my signature on. I kept him out of federal prison. I sacrificed my family's legacy to save his."

"And he repaid your loyalty by cutting your brake lines," Nora stated, her tone devoid of pity.

"We don't have proof he cut the lines."

"You spent six nights in the trauma ward ten days ago," Nora shot back, stepping into my line of sight and blocking the television. "Your car mysteriously failed at a cliffside curve. You woke up with cracked ribs, a concussion, and severe lacerations. You called Julian fourteen times from that hospital bed. You called Ethan fourteen times. Your husband and your adult son blocked your numbers while you lay there bleeding."

My jaw tightened. The memory of the sterile hospital ceiling pressed down on me. The endless, mocking tone of the disconnected line ringing in my ear. The pitying looks from the nurses when no one came to visit during visiting hours.

"They claimed they were out of range on a hunting trip," I said, though I no longer believed the excuse.

"They were hiding her," Nora corrected. She slapped a thin manila folder onto the metal table between us. "Open it."

I reached out, my fingers stiff. I flipped the cover open. A glossy photograph stared back at me. Julian and Ethan standing outside a high-end restaurant, smiling. Between them stood Lila. She looked exactly the same. Perfect blonde hair, flawless skin.

"She returned from Europe two weeks ago," Nora said, watching my face for a reaction. "Right before your brakes failed. And your son didn't just drop out of contact for a hunting trip. Julian transferred Ethan to Vale Academy. A private campus in a gated county. One you do not have access to."

I stared at Ethan's smiling face. My son. The boy I raised, looking absolutely thrilled to be standing next to the woman who nearly destroyed our marriage a decade ago.

"Julian told me Ethan was studying for finals at his usual dorm," I murmured.

"Julian lies," Nora said. "He lied about the loan. He lied about Lila. He lied about the brakes."

"Ethan is nineteen," I argued, clinging to a shred of denial. "He wouldn't just go along with this. He wouldn't shut me out for her."

"Listen to your own evidence, Mara."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. The screen bore spiderweb cracks from the crash, but the audio file I had recovered from my cloud backup still functioned. An accidental pocket dial from Ethan, recorded the night before my car went off the bridge.

"I've only listened to the first ten seconds," I admitted.

"Play the rest."

I tapped play.

Static hissed through the small speaker, followed by the sharp clinking of glassware.

"She never stops suffocating us," Ethan's voice complained, loud and clear. "Fourteen calls, Dad. She's a control freak. I can't breathe when she's around."

I stared at the metal table, refusing to let Nora see the sting in my eyes.

"Just ignore them," Julian answered on the recording. His tone carried a light, dismissive edge. "She'll tire herself out. She always does. Let her sit in that hospital room and think about how she pushes everyone away."

"I just want her gone," Ethan muttered. "Lila actually listens to me. Lila doesn't treat me like a child."

I paused the recording. The silence in the safe room felt heavy, suffocating.

"They left me there," I said, the reality finally anchoring itself in my chest. "They knew I was hurt, and they left me."

"They wanted you out of the way," Nora said. She reached into her dark suit jacket. She placed a crisp, laminated driver's license on the table, right over the photo of Lila.

The face on the card was mine. The name read Avery Lane.

Next to the ID, Nora set down a printed property receipt from the FBI evidence locker. Item 44: Blue Encrypted Hard Drive.

"Mara Cross died in that river," Nora told me, pointing to the screen where the news anchor was now summarizing the tragic accident. "Avery Lane gets to use this drive to bury them. The financial records on that drive will put Julian away for the rest of his life. Are you ready to let Mara stay dead?"

I looked at the ID. Avery Lane. A ghost designed to hunt down the men who threw me away.

"Yes," I said.

I pressed my thumb against the play button on my cracked screen to close the app, but my finger slipped. The audio file resumed playing.

The background noise on the recording shifted. Footsteps echoed heavily on hardwood floors, moving away from the clinking glasses.

Then, Julian's voice dropped to a harsh, hurried whisper, cutting straight through the digital static.

"She's already dead, don't mention Lila or the transfer to the cops."
