Chapter 1

On the day of SAT, I had a heart attack and had to ask my husband, Victor Hastings, to take our son, Frank Hastings, to the examination room.

But halfway through the drive, Victor suddenly said he had something urgent to do and left Frank behind.

By the time I took a quick-acting heart-saving pill and rushed to my son from the hospital, Frank had been bitten by a poisonous snake.

I fought hard to get Frank to the hospital, but it took a special serum developed by Victor to save him.

When Frank was in danger, I called Victor frantically to urge him.

"Victor! Frank was bitten by an unknown venomous snake and needs your company's special serum. Please send it to the central hospital!"

I heard Victor's sneer coming from the microphone.

"Chloe, I know you're talking nonsense!"

Before the phone hung up, I heard the voice of his lover.

"Victor, you are so cold. That's your wife..."

Then the call was hung up.

I watched Frank stop breathing due to the snake venom.

When Victor finally arrived, he saw Frank's tombstone.

I died of a heart attack due to the overwhelming stress.

Victor died on the way home from the cemetery.

Finally, our whole family died.

***

In the operating room, the attending physician was very anxious.

"Patient's family! Hasn't the special serum been delivered yet? The boy is dying!"

I said, "I'll call him again right away!"

Looking at the fifty-five calls that had been dialed on my phone, I anxiously called him again.

"Sorry, the number you dialed is powered off. Please try again later."

The phone I used to call was so hot that it almost didn't work, but Victor never answered my call.

At this time, Victor should be at work. And it would only take him half an hour to deliver the serum.

I couldn't wait any longer, so I drove over immediately.

Unexpectedly, Victor was not in the company, but I saw an advertisement for a plastic surgery hospital on his desk.

Suddenly remembering something, I immediately rushed to the plastic surgery hospital.

Sure enough, as soon as I entered the hall, I saw two people sitting next to each other waiting to be treated.

I didn't care about the two to be so close behind my back.

I rushed over and grabbed Victor by the collar.

"Victor, give me the special serum quickly! Frank is lying in the emergency room waiting for help!"

Victor was stunned for a moment, then pushed me away with disgust.

"Chloe, what's wrong with you! You installed a GPS on my car? How did you know I was here?"

I didn't have time to argue with him when Frank was dying, so I just repeated those words hurriedly.

"Serum! Special serum! Frank was bitten by an unknown venomous snake and is dying!"

Victor looked at me quietly, with an indifferent expression, as if he was certain that I was lying.

Kayla Watson on the side glanced at me with disdain and spoke indifferently.

"Chloe, I know you've always hated me, but you can't make up such an excuse just to snatch Victor away. Venomous snakes only exist in the South, and we're in the North!"

For a moment, I didn't know how to explain to this couple.

When I rushed over to Frank, he had already been poisoned and was unconscious.

I didn't see what kind of venomous snake it was, so the special serum was used.

Victor ran a biotechnology company that mainly researched various vaccines.

A broad-spectrum special serum had just been developed this year, which was specifically targeted at venomous snakes of unknown species.

Victor's company was the only one in the country that produced the first experimental products.

It had not yet been launched on the market in large quantities. And Victor was the direct person in charge of the company.

Without his personal signature, no one could use the serum.

Right now, I was in a hurry to get the serum to save Frank's life. But they were still arguing with me.

I was so anxious that I couldn't help yelling at Victor.

"It's true! You left Frank on the road, and he was bitten by a snake! He is now lying in the central hospital. Give me the serum first!"

Victor still looked at me coldly, with a sarcastic expression.

"You are still blaming me for abandoning Frank on the road. What's wrong with you as his mother sending him off?"

Seeing Victor's stubborn look, my heart started beating wildly with anxiety.

I quickly swallowed another quick-acting heart pill and managed to hold on to my body which was about to faint.

Victor had always been arrogant in front of me, and he never asked about picking up and dropping off Frank.

I knew he was busy with work, and I never let him worry about Frank.

But this time, Frank faced the first major choice in his life.

But I happened to have an acute heart attack because I had been anxious in recent days.

Otherwise, I would not let him send Frank to SAT. I didn't expect that something would go wrong just once!

I was so anxious that I almost cursed. I clenched my fists and even wanted to punch Victor in the face.

Kayla played with her fingernails and looked at me with disdain.

"Chloe, don't embarrass Victor. I suddenly felt a little uncomfortable in my nose. It might be that the prosthesis I filled in before was displaced, so I asked Victor to accompany me to repair it. However, you should not scare Victor with Frank's life because of this."

The anger that I had been suppressing could no longer be controlled, so I raised my hand and slapped Kayla in the face.

"Shameless bitch! Frank is dying, and you still care about your fake nose!"

I slapped her with so much force that it immediately made Kayla's fake nose even more crooked.

Kayla didn't cover her face, but instead held her crooked nose and screamed in horror.

"Ahhh, my nose! My nose is broken. I'm going to be disfigured!"

Victor, who had an indifferent expression just now, immediately rushed over and hugged Kayla in his arms.

"Kayla, let me take a look at your nose. Don't worry. You will have the surgery to repair it right away!"

As he said that, Victor hugged Kayla and walked towards the operating room.

I grabbed Victor impatiently.

"Give me the special serum first! Otherwise, call your assistant and authorize him to get it for me, and I'll go to the company to get it!"

Victor pushed me away.

"That's enough. I don't have time to play games with you. Kayla's nose still needs to be repaired!"

After saying that, the two walked out hugging each other, leaving me alone at a loss.

I really couldn't understand why Victor refused to believe my plea.

Even if he wanted to accompany his lover, he could authorize his assistant so that I could extract the serum!

At this time, the attending doctor called me again, and I immediately answered the phone and hurried to explain.

"Doctor, don't worry. I'm trying to find a solution. Just wait a moment, and I'll be able to..."

There was no urging as I expected, and my phone was quiet. I had a bad feeling.

Sure enough, the next second, the doctor's voice sounded.

"No. Ms. Young, your son has passed away."

I didn't know how I hung up the phone, I just knew that my mind went blank in an instant.

I almost fell to the ground. Regardless of my sadness, I immediately drove to the hospital.

Frank had turned into a corpse. His skin had turned black and purple, and it looked horrible.

I called Frank's name over and over again and kept crying.

I was heartbroken and handled Frank's funeral on my own.

Looking at Frank's bright smile on the tombstone, I felt it a little unreal.

My optimistic and handsome son left me just like that.

I was squatting in front of Frank's tombstone in a daze, when Victor called me.

"It's the company's fiftieth anniversary. Bring Frank along to attend it. I'll introduce you and Frank to the shareholders."

I reached out and stroked Frank's bright smiling face in the picture, and spoke coldly.

"Okay, we'll be there on time."

Chapter 2

The fact that Victor and I got married was an accident.

At that time, I had just been admitted to university and went there alone.

I had so much luggage that it was difficult for me to walk.

But I saw a handsome boy walking down from a luxury car.

There were several servants following him, each helping him carry his luggage.

At that time, I was still wondering who was this rich boy.

He was so high-profile when he went to college. He was showing off his wealth.

As I was muttering, I lost my balance and fell on the boy with my luggage.

The boy felt in pain after being hit by me, but he didn't say a single bad word.

Instead, he looked at me with great concern.

"Miss, are you okay?"

I immediately felt ashamed for secretly muttering about him.

I immediately steadied myself and reached out to pull him up.

"I'm fine. I'm sorry. My name is Chloe. What's yours?"

"My name is Victor. Let's go. I'll ask servants to help you move your luggage."

From that day on, we knew each other and later got married.

Actually, I felt very inferior when I first dated him.

My father was in poor health and had retired due to illness. My mother ran a small business and supported the family on her own.

Victor was the only son of the well-known entrepreneur in the city and a rich boy.

I wasn't doing well in school at that time because I often skipped classes to help my mother sell goods.

Sometimes I skipped classes to go to the hospital to get medicines for my dad.

But Victor was a top student.

I once secretly asked him why he chose to be with me.

After all, there were so many girls pursuing him.

He just said, because I didn't look as scheming as those girls.

He thought my eyes were innocent.

Four years in college and fifteen years after graduation. We had dated for nineteen years.

Our love were never as passionate as others, but rather calm and peaceful.

I thought we would stay together like this until we grow old, until Kayla suddenly came back from studying abroad.

Victor hid her very well. Before this, I didn't know that he had an ex-girlfriend in his heart.

Until the day Kayla returned, Victor deliberately avoided me and took Kayla and a group of friends to get drunk until late at night.

That night, he didn't come back. I asked him casually, and he said he was working overtime at the company. I didn't ask any more questions.

But from that day on, he didn't come home more and more frequently.

And he spent more and more time with Kayla.

No matter how late it was, no matter what it was, if Kayla called or texted him, Victor would do whatever it took to be there with her.

As soon as Kayla returned, Victor arranged for her to work as his secretary.

He never intended to tell me about that until one time I went to the company to see him.

I just found out that he had hired a new secretary, Kayla.

Before this, he had always been accompanied by a male assistant named Kevin.

At the beginning, I also quarreled and made a fuss with him because of Kayla.

But every time I did that, I would push him further away from me, which in turn created more opportunities for him and Kayla.

Later, I got tired and didn't want to be bothered by these anymore.

Fortunately, Frank was very hardworking and got excellent grades.

He even ranked among the best in physical education subjects. I placed all my hopes and expectations on Frank.

I thought that I could lose Victor's love in this life.

I should have been happy to have my son accompany me throughout my life, but I didn't expect that Frank would die like this.

But he had just turned eighteen, and the new chapter of his life had just begun.

This was so unfair! It should have been the couple who died!

Chapter 3

In the evening, I dressed up and put on exquisite makeup.

She appeared glamorously at the company's 50th anniversary party.

When I walked into the banquet hall, everyone looked at me.

People looked at me with surprise and envy, and discussed who I was.

I had been married to Victor for nineteen years, and he never took me to participate in various company activities.

He never introduced me to his relatives and friends. I was hidden by him.

Might it was because my family background was too ordinary, and bringing me out would embarrass him.

After all, the Hastings family didn't agree to our marriage back then, and it was his insistence that led us to get married.

I saw the main table at a glance. Apart from several shareholders and executives, there were Victor and Kayla.

At this time, Kayla was leaning half of her body on Victor, patiently feeding him grapes.

"Victor, please have another one. These are imported grapes."

A young executive nearby spoke.

"Mrs. Hastings, please stop showing off your affection with Mr. Hastings in front of us. We can't stand it!"

Kayla smiled and acted coquettishly.

"Stop. You talked too much."

Victor enjoyed it all with a smile and did not deny Kayla's identity at all.

Victor finally noticed me coming. He was stunned for a moment and looked at me with some surprise.

I deliberately stood beside Victor and looked at Kayla.

"So... Where should I sit?"

What I meant was very clear. I should sit in Kayla's seat, next to Victor.

If ordinary people saw me, they would be able to guess something even if they didn't know my identity.

But Kayla pretended not to know and sat there motionless.

Fortunately, a few executives on the other side were tactful enough to move two seats aside and let me sit next to Victor.

The executive who had talked to Kayla looked at me with confusion.

"Mr. Hastings, who is this?"

I also deliberately smiled and looked at Victor.

"Mr. Hastings, who am I supposed to be?"

Victor's expression looked a little cold. He glared at me coldly and spoke reluctantly.

"Everyone, let me introduce my wife, Chloe."

Victor's words shocked everyone at the table.

Especially the executive, who had just talked to Kayla, was stunned.

He looked at me for a while, then looked at Kayla.

Finally, he picked up the wine glass and took a big sip awkwardly, not daring to speak.

Kayla, who was standing by, also had an uncomfortable expression on her face, but she quickly adjusted herself.

She kept her elegant posture and offered Victor a refill.

In the entire company, apart from Kevin, several old shareholders actually knew my identity as well.

One of the shareholders, Eric, looked at me with a smile.

"Chloe, I rarely see you attending company banquets. Why are you so interested today?"

I thought to myself, "It is not because I didn't like attending company banquets. It is because Victor simply didn't allow me to come.

He was afraid that people in the company would know about my relationship with him, and that it would affect Kayla and him from showing their affection."

I also smiled and nodded to Eric.

"Yes, Eric. I usually spend most of my time taking care of Frank, and I rarely participate in company activities."

Another shareholder, Xavier, suddenly looked at Victor.

"By the way, Victor, Frank is eighteen this year, right? Did he just take SAT? How did he do?"

This question stumped Victor, and he looked at me for help.

I remembered that before Frank died, I begged him to give me the special serum, but he ruthlessly refused me.

I was very angry. How dared he look at me?

I kept a cold face and said nothing, glaring at him coldly.

Eric added.

"Didn't they say Frank would come with you today? Why don't I see him? I've watched this boy grow up, and I haven't seen him in a few years."

Seeing that he couldn't escape, Victor frowned and questioned me.

"Didn't you hear Eric asking about Frank? I told you to bring him here. Where is he?"

I finally couldn't help it. I had a look of mockery.

"You finally remember Frank?"

Victor slapped the fork on the table.

"What do you mean? When did I not think about Frank? It's just that I'm busy with work and don't have time to spend with him. You don't work, so naturally you spend more time with him. Isn't this what you should do as a mother? However, you blame me!"

I sneered.

"Really? Why did you abandon Frank on the day of SAT, and then go to accompany your lover to have a plastic surgery?"

Victor's face suddenly turned gloomy. And he looked at me with anger.

"Chloe! Pay attention to the occasion and don't talk about these here! Call Frank now and ask him to come over immediately. Tell him that Xavier and Eric want to see him!"

I said, "You also saved Frank's phone number. Why don't you call him yourself?"

Victor glared at me with a cold face, but still took out his cell phone and looked through the phone numbers.

After a long time, he suddenly asked me with a frown.

"I have three of his phone numbers. Which one is he using now?"

Victor's reaction surprised several shareholders and executives at the table.

He was Frank's biological father, but he didn't even know which phone number Frank used.

That was right. Victor usually had no time to care about Frank. He was busy accompanying his lover to do beauty treatments and repair her nose.

Victor even helped her change the lamp and buy cold medicine.

I had had heart disease for three years, and it had become very serious this year, but he had never asked about it.

I looked at him quietly without saying anything. And he dialed all three numbers in anger.

"Sorry, the number you dialed is unavailable. Please check before redialing."

After dialing three numbers, he got the same prompt all the time. Victor angrily slammed his phone on the table.

"What the hell! None of these three numbers are working!"

I just looked at him quietly.

"Do you want to know why?"

He said, "Why are you keeping me in suspense? Call him and ask him to come over!"

I spoke slowly.

"The first number was used when he was fifteen. He changed his phone, so he changed his number.

"He lost his phone when he was seventeen, so he got a new number.

"The third number was the one I personally cancelled for him on the day of SAT..."

Having said that, I couldn't help but burst out in tears.

My reaction shocked everyone at the table. And Victor became anxious.

"What's wrong with you? Why did you cancel his account? Hurry up and find a way to get him over. Don't keep Eric and Xavier waiting!"

I wiped my tears and looked around.

"Don't worry. Frank is here."

After saying that, I took out the portrait from the bag and placed it on the table.
