On Our Engagement Stage, He Handed My Ring To Another Summary
Chapter 1 of On Our Engagement Stage, He Handed My Ring To Another
"Ladies and gentlemen, the moment you've all been waiting for. The exchange of rings!"
The emcee's voice boomed through the ballroom. Three hundred guests turned toward the stage.
I stood under the crystal lights in the white silk dress I'd picked out six months ago. My hands were shaking. Not from fear. From happiness.
Kai Morrow, my fiancé of two years and my boyfriend of five, stood across from me in a navy tux. He held the velvet box. Inside sat the ring I'd chosen with him. A three-carat oval diamond.
"Kai," I whispered. "You look nervous."
He didn't smile.
He set the box on the podium. Then he picked up the engagement agreement, the one both our names were printed on, and held it up for the room to see.
"Before we do this," he said into the mic, "I need to be honest with everyone."
My stomach dropped.
"Kai? What are you doing?"
He tore the paper in half.
Then in half again.
The pieces fluttered onto the stage like dead petals. Someone in the front row gasped. A champagne glass shattered somewhere near the bar.
"Kai!"
He ignored me. He flipped open the velvet box, pulled out my ring, and turned to the woman standing just off the stage in a red dress.
Celeste Arden. Heiress to Arden Capital. The woman Kai had called "just a business contact" three weeks ago.
She held out her left hand like she'd been waiting all night.
He slid my ring onto her finger.
The ballroom exploded.
"Is this a joke?"
"Oh my God, is he serious?"
"That poor girl—"
My feet wouldn't move. My face burned. I could feel every phone in the room pointed at me.
Finally, I forced myself forward. My heel caught on a torn scrap of the agreement.
"Kai." My voice came out thin. I swallowed and tried again. "Kai, look at me."
He turned. His eyes were flat. Bored, almost.
"Five years," I said. "Five years, and you do this? Here? In front of everyone?"
"Would you have preferred a text?"
A few people laughed. I wanted the floor to swallow me.
"How long?" I asked.
"How long what?"
"How long have you been sleeping with her?"
He didn't even blink. "Four months."
Four months. The late nights. The "investor dinners." The way he'd stopped kissing me goodbye.
"Why?" My throat closed around the word. "Just tell me why."
Kai stepped closer. He lowered the mic, but not enough. Everyone could still hear.
"You want to know why, Sylvia? Fine. Celeste's family is putting sixty million dollars into Morrow Tech. Sixty million. Do you understand what that means? We go public. We become the biggest name in the industry."
"So this is about money."
"This is about the future." He laughed, short and cold. "And what do you bring to the table? Seriously. Tell me."
I stared at him.
"You work at a nonprofit," he went on. "You drive a ten-year-old Honda. Your family is, what, some quiet nobodies from upstate? You've never once introduced me to them. Probably because there's nothing to introduce."
My nails bit into my palms.
"I've carried you for five years," he said. "Five years of you showing up to my events in discount dresses. Five years of my partners asking, 'Who's the girl?' I have ambitions, Sylvia. You were never going to keep up."
Carried me.
He thought he carried me.
The Halvorsen contract that saved his company in year two? I'd made that call. The angel investor who appeared out of nowhere when payroll was about to bounce? A shell fund my father's people set up because I begged them to. The senator's chief of staff who "happened" to sit next to Kai at that charity gala? I'd arranged the seating chart myself.
All of it. Quietly. Under a fake name.
Because Kai once told me, drunk and crying on our kitchen floor, "If I ever find out someone handed me my success, I'll never forgive myself."
So I hid it. I hid everything.
Including the fact that I'm Hugo Voss's only daughter.
The richest man in the country. The man whose name made senators straighten their ties.
I'd used my mother's maiden name since college. I'd turned down my father's credit cards. I'd driven that stupid Honda on purpose, so Kai would never feel small.
And now he stood here calling me nothing.
"Say something," Kai snapped. "Or are you just going to stand there and cry?"
I wasn't crying.
That surprised me. My eyes were dry. My chest felt hollow, scraped clean.
Instead, a small laugh slipped out of me.
Kai frowned. "What's funny?"
"Nothing," I said. "You just have no idea, do you?"
"No idea about what?"
Celeste glided up beside him before I could answer. She tucked her hand into the crook of his arm, angling it so the diamond caught the light. My diamond.
"Oh, sweetie," she purred. "Don't do this to yourself. It's embarrassing."
"Nobody asked you, Celeste."
"No, but somebody should tell you." She tilted her head, studying me like a stain on the carpet. "Did you honestly think a man like Kai would marry a girl like you? You're sweet. Really. But sweet doesn't pay for a Series C."
A ripple of laughter moved through the crowd. Some of those people had eaten at our table. Some had hugged me an hour ago.
"You played house," Celeste went on, "while the grown-ups made deals. That's not love, honey. That's naivety." She wiggled her fingers. "This ring looks better on me anyway. Don't you think?"
Kai smirked. He didn't defend me. He didn't even look uncomfortable.
That was the moment something inside me cracked. Not broke. Cracked open.
I looked at the ring on her hand. I looked at the shredded paper at my feet. I looked at the man I'd bled for in secret for five years.
"Enjoy it," I said quietly.
Celeste's smile faltered for half a second. "Excuse me?"
"The ring. The sixty million. Him." I met Kai's eyes. "Enjoy all of it while it lasts."
Kai scoffed. "Is that supposed to be a threat? From you?"
I didn't answer.
My phone was buzzing in my clutch. I didn't need to check it. Only one person called me three times in a row like that.
My father had seen the livestream.
And for the first time in five years, I wasn't going to tell him no.
