Chapter 1 of No Second Chance, Mr. Whitmore

LENA'S POV

I wore the pale blue dress Graham gave me six years ago, the one he said made me look like the first warm day of spring.

It still fit. I'd checked twice in the mirror before I left.

When I pushed open the doors to the banquet hall, the smell hit me first. Roses, thick and sugary, the kind of perfume that clung to the back of your throat. Chloe's scent. She'd worn it to our house every Sunday since spring, and Graham once joked that he could tell she'd been in the kitchen just by walking through it.

Then I saw the color.

Pink balloons bobbed against the ceiling. Pink roses spilled out of glass vases on every table. Pink tablecloths, pink napkins folded into little swans, a pink banner over the stage that said HAPPY BIRTHDAY in glittering script.

I hated pink. Graham knew that.

I looked down at the photo in my hand, the one I'd spent all afternoon choosing and framing for the slideshow. I'd held it so tightly in the car that my thumb had left a mark on the glass. Graham in a hospital chair, holding a newborn Oliver against his chest, both of them asleep.

That was the year Oliver first went into the hospital for his asthma. Three nights of beeping monitors and an oxygen mask over a face too small for it. On the third night, Graham had taken my hand across the plastic rails of the crib.

"You'll never have to fight for your place in this family," he'd said. "Not with me. Not ever."

I lifted my head.

Across the room, my husband was tucking a loose strand of hair behind Chloe's ear. His fingers lingered on the pearl clip she wore there, adjusting it like it mattered.

I walked over. Neither of them noticed until I was close enough to touch.

"I thought you said this was my birthday party."

Graham dropped his hand. Not quickly. Just like he'd finished.

"It is," he said. "Chloe helped set up. Doesn't it look great?"

Before I could answer, small sneakers slapped against the floor.

"Mommy! Mommy, wait!"

My heart lifted on instinct. Oliver came running, six years old, cheeks flushed, clutching a folded sheet of construction paper to his chest. His little hands were streaked with blue paint.

I bent and reached for him.

He ran right past me.

He threw himself at Chloe's legs, stretched up on his toes, and kissed her cheek when she leaned down.

"Happy birthday, Mommy Chloe! You're my favorite mom!"

My hand stayed out in the air, holding nothing.

The guests near us laughed. Someone said, "Aw." Chloe pressed a hand to her chest like she'd been handed a puppy.

Oliver opened the card for her. The crayon letters were crooked and enormous: FOR MY MOMMY. Below them, he'd drawn three people holding hands under a yellow sun. A tall man with brown hair. A little boy. A woman with long dark hair and a white dot by her ear.

A pearl.

There was no fourth person. There was no me.

Behind them, on the cake table, a giant number 30 sat in pink frosting. My number. My age.

And suddenly, things I'd let slide started lining up.

The weekends Oliver came home talking about a "special place," and every time I asked where, Graham answered for him. *Just the park, Lena. Just lunch.* The school family day I'd taken off work for, until Graham told me it had been canceled. Two weeks later, I'd seen the photos on Chloe's phone when she left it on our counter. Oliver in a paper crown. Graham's arm around her waist. A banner behind them that read *Welcome, Families!*

I'd told myself I misunderstood.

I hadn't misunderstood anything. They'd been cutting me out for months, and I'd been standing in the gap they made, smiling.

I crouched in front of my son. "Ollie, sweetheart. Who taught you to write that?"

He didn't look at me. He looked up at Graham.

Then he grabbed a fistful of Chloe's skirt and pressed against her.

"Oliver," I said softly. "It's okay. You can tell me."

Chloe's eyes went red and glossy at once. "Lena, I'm so sorry. I never asked him to call me that. I just love him so much. I didn't think it would hurt you."

"You didn't think," I repeated.

A hand clamped around my wrist and hauled it up, away from my son.

"Stop it," Graham said, loud enough for the nearest tables. "He worked on that card for a week. You're ruining his surprise."

"His surprise for her." I twisted against his grip. "Graham, it's my birthday. Why is everything in this room Chloe's favorite color?"

"Because Chloe planned all of it." His jaw tightened. "She spent days on this while you were at work. You should be thanking her."

"Thanking her?"

"Graham, it's fine," Chloe said quietly. "Maybe she should see why Ollie's been so upset lately."

She lifted a small remote.

The projector screen behind the stage flickered. My slideshow should have been playing there. Instead, I saw myself.

My face filled the wall, mouth wide, eyes wild, finger jabbing toward a small figure. My voice blasted through the speakers.

"*Oliver! Get over here right now! What did I tell you?*"

On-screen, Oliver flinched and started to cry.

The room went quiet. Then the whispers started, low and quick, rippling from table to table.

"Is that her?"

"God, poor kid."

I knew that day. I recognized the blue tiles, the pool behind the camera. I remembered why I'd screamed. I opened my mouth.

Graham spoke first.

"I didn't want to do this in front of everyone." He let go of my wrist. Red finger marks bloomed across my skin. "But Oliver would rather be with Chloe right now. He's told me so. More than once."

I stared at him. "You're going to stand there and let them think..."

"Think what? That's you on the screen, Lena."

"You know what happened that day."

"I know what I'm looking at." He stepped closer and lowered his voice, but not enough. "Maybe Oliver would love you more if you acted like a mother worth loving."

Someone at the next table sucked in a breath.

I waited for the tears. They didn't come. Something in my chest had just gone very still and very cold.

I didn't kneel down and beg my son to understand. I didn't explain the pool to a room of strangers holding pink champagne.

I walked to the cake table instead.

Beside the cake sat the small velvet box I'd set out when I arrived, wrapped in silver paper. Our anniversary was next week. Inside was the watch he'd circled in a catalog last winter and then said was too expensive. I'd saved for four months.

I picked it up and put it back in my bag.

Then I turned to face him. "Are you really asking me to leave my own birthday party?"

Graham didn't even hesitate.

"I think you should move out for a few days. Cool off." He glanced at Oliver. "He doesn't need to keep seeing you lose control like this."

He reached out and took Chloe's hand. Openly. In front of everyone.

I looked at my son. Oliver ducked behind Chloe's back until only one blue-painted hand showed, still gripping her skirt.

The candles on the cake had burned halfway down. Wax pooled pink over the frosting, dripping onto the 3.

I slid my wedding ring off. It came free more easily than I expected. I set it on the white tablecloth beside the cake, where the diamond caught the light from the dying candles.

"You don't have to ask me to leave twice, Graham."

I pulled my car keys from my bag and closed my fist around them until the teeth bit into my palm. Then I walked toward the doors.

No one stopped me.

I had my hand on the brass handle when I heard my son's voice behind me, bright and hopeful, the way he used to sound asking for ice cream.

"Daddy? Does this mean we can live with Mommy Chloe forever now?"

I didn't turn around.

Because for the first time, I understood that my husband cheating on me wasn't the cruelest thing he'd done.

The cruelest thing was that he'd already taught our son how to leave me behind.
