Chapter 5
On our way to get her passport, my daughter could not stop talking about Pigeon Square in Fiorenza.
"Mommy, can I feed a whole bunch of pigeons? Will you come with me?"
"Of course! I'll be right there with you for whatever you want," I said, smiling and stroking her hair.
Too bad I had to start my new job at the Blake Group today and could not spend more time with her.
I quickly led my daughter past the line and into the VIP lounge to wait for our turn.
"Hello, I'll be helping you with... Alice?! "
I spun around, and there was Camila, in her crisp uniform. She glared at me.
Was it really her?
I did not want to waste words, so I grabbed my daughter's hand, ready to walk away.
However, Camila stepped in front of us, eyeing our plain dresses.
"It is you, isn't it? How did you manage to get into the VIP room? This is only for clients who make more than ten million a year!
"Oh, I get it. You must've ridden some rich guy's coattails to get in, huh? What, did he dump you? You look so poor."
My daughter touched her dress, which had been tailored just for her by a famous designer, and gave Camila a confused look.
I was too tired to deal with her, so I tossed the papers at her. "If you're not going to help, find someone who will."
She barely looked at them before pushing them back. "The documents aren't complete. Go back and fill them out."
"Which part is incomplete?" I asked, my voice turning icy.
"If I say they're incomplete, they're incomplete," she said, smugly folding her arms. "You think you can still act all high and mighty like you did back in school? As long as I'm here, you won't get this passport done!"
I snatched the papers back and called the complaint line. "Hello, I want to report a case of someone misusing their power."
Camila's face went pale, and she lunged for my phone.
Just then, the door swung open.
"Camila, how much longer will I have to wait? Aren't you coming home after work?"
That impatient voice was unmistakably familiar.
I looked up to see Alexander, all dressed up in his suit and shoes.
He stopped short when he saw me, his eyes narrowing slightly as they passed over my daughter.
"Dear, she's picking on me!" Camila whined, pointing at me. "She's even threatening me!"
Alexander did not say a word. He just kept his gaze fixed on me, his face a mix of emotions.
"Alice, it's been years, yet you're still as sharp as ever."
He stepped around Camila's attempt to hug him but still stood by her side.
"Now's not the time for you to be the bully. Apologize to Camila, and we'll forget this happened."
"Apologize?" I could not help but laugh. "Who do you think you are? I have to report her today, and we can settle this in court if we need to."
Camila stamped her foot in frustration. "Alexander, her daughter's form doesn't have her father's details. I'm just doing my job by the book!"
Alexander's face softened a bit when he heard about the missing father's details. He probably thought I was someone's secret girlfriend, which was why the details were missing.
His expression turned sour.
"Don't turn away a helping hand. My dad just hired the best lawyer around, Ivy, to run our legal department. If you take this to court, you're going to lose for sure!"
I smiled, full of confidence. "And who is your father?"
He lifted his chin proudly, as if he had been waiting for this moment.
"Danial Blake."
He was the wealthiest man in Arcland, a living symbol of ultimate power and riches.
He had asked me seven times to work for him before I said yes.
Camila's post only said he was the president. Now, I knew that my ex-boyfriend, whom I used to support when he was poor, was actually the son of the country's richest man.
The ridiculousness of it all hit me, and I could not help but find it funny.
He thought I was scared because I went quiet, and a look of revenge flashed in his eyes.
"Scared? I wanted to tell you the truth after I graduated. I would have married you even if my family hadn't agreed.
"However, what did you do? You were so obsessed with work! You ignored me, chased after money, and then you broke up with me out of the blue. Then, you went off with another man and even had a kid! You really..."
"Call her," I cut him off, my voice steady.
"What?"
"Call your dad's new legal chief." I smirked. "Weren't you going to make sure I'd lose?"
Alexander's face turned green. "Alright! You brought this on yourself!" He whipped out his phone, dialed quickly, and put it on speaker.
Seconds later, my phone rang.
With Alexander and Camila staring in shock, I answered the call, and my voice came through his phone's speaker.
"I'm Ivy, the lawyer you're talking about. Can I help you with something?"
