Chapter 3
After seeing the scandal, I called him to demand an explanation.
Simon replied calmly, "We were just discussing the script, Claire. If outsiders don't trust me, do you not trust me either?"
Love had become a weapon to destroy me. I loved him, so I stayed silent.
After a moment, my voice trembled despite my effort to sound steady. "I trust you."
But the voice that came through next wasn't Simon's.
"Honey, the food is all served. Aren't you coming?"
I was about to say something, but the sharp click as he hung up the phone felt like a physical blow.
Bitterness piled up in my throat and my chest felt tight with suffocating pain.
Sweet memories of us together raced through my mind.
On the last day of our three-year relationship, I bought a ticket to their movie premiere.
Watching them interact intimately on stage, they reenacted the iconic confession scene from the film.
The glasses I wore as a disguise fogged up with tears. A girl beside me noticed my quiet sobs and handed me a pack of tissues.
The tissues had pictures of Simon and Hannah printed on them.
"You think their love is touching too, right? They're really such a perfect match!"
Tears fell onto my journal as my memories blurred.
When I came back to my senses, I instinctively wiped the tear stains from my face and silently left with my journal in hand.
I flipped through my journal and recalled our memories when I got home.
When Simon returned, he casually drank the soup I had made. He smiled, saying, "So you haven't forgotten me after all? I knew you were trying to trick me into coming back earlier."
Even now, he still thought I was lying to him.
I gave a bitter laugh, curled up in my blanket and clung to the faint warmth of a hot water bottle.
The following day, the production team announced we'd move to Switzerland for the shoot.
My seat on the flight was next to Simon's.
Hannah looked at me with expectant eyes. She was just about to speak when I handed her my ticket.
"Let's switch seats."
She feigned hesitation and coyly replied, "Don't you want to sit next to Simon? Even if I'm not by his side, I believe our hearts are always together."
She looked at me with a challenging glint, eager to see my reaction.
As the deadline approached, I had gradually forgotten the good times we used to have and only remembered Simon's recent coldness towards me.
I responded flatly, "Oh."
"If you don't want it, I'll find someone else to switch with."
Unusually direct in public, Simon grabbed my arm and snapped, "Is that how much you don't want to sit with me?"
I had no idea why he was so upset.
Maybe it was because I'd hurt his pride?
Confused, I asked, "Do you want to sit with me? I thought you'd prefer to be with Hannah."
My words struck a nerve. Simon snatched my ticket and pulled Hannah close.
"Since you don't want to, then stay away from me for the rest of your life!"
I watched as he stormed off with Hannah, gripping her waist tightly.
My eyes stung, but my heart strangely didn't ache as much.
His final threatening words didn't carry much weight for me anymore.
During our free time in Switzerland, I bought a new journal.
I filled it with people and moments that truly mattered.
This time, Simon was omitted.
After boarding the program crew's bus, I looked out the window. The snowy landscape stretched endlessly, peaceful and serene.
Chapter 4
The world was entire of beautiful things, yet it felt like I was trapped in Simon's orbit.
I became an actress because of him and every role I've taken has been to get closer to his sets.
I pressed my pen hard against the paper, writing down everything I wanted to experience in the future.
Focused on my writing, I didn't notice Hannah leaning over.
She snatched my notebook and began reading aloud with a teasing grin.
"Go deep-sea diving?"
"Claire, have you never done this before? If you go, you could ask Simon to join you. He taught me personally the last time I went."
Of course, I already knew—she'd posted about it on her social media.
His long, elegant fingers had held her steady as she dove.
Those same hands once gripped mine just as tightly.
Simon's expression darkened as he overheard her words.
Then my phone buzzed. I opened it to see his message, which was still pinned at the top of my chat list.
After unpinning the chat, I read his message.
"Why do you keep bringing up things from so long ago? Is it necessary, Claire?"
"I can recommend an instructor if you want to try diving, but if you expect me to join you. Sorry, I'm busy."
I stared at the message momentarily, set his chat to "Do Not Disturb," and replied with a simple "Oh."
I watched his face darken suddenly, but I didn't care. I snatched back my diary and glared at Hannah.
"There are no cameras now, so nobody likes a loudmouth like you."
Hannah turned to Simon with a pitiful look. "Simon."
As Simon was about to say something, I put on my headphones, cutting him off.
Wendy had already arrived in Switzerland, so I sent her the hotel location arranged by the production team.
Not long after, there was a knock at my door.
I rushed to the door without even putting on my shoes.
As I opened the door, my smile faltered. "What are you doing here?"
Standing there was Simon.
Instead of answering my question, he frowned deeply and asked, "Who were you expecting? Are you unhappy to see me?"
Recently, Simon had been acting strangely—almost unrecognizably so.
When we used to film at the same hotel, he never came looking for me and didn't allow me to seek him out either.
"Work comes first. We're married, but does it matter if we stay together or not?"
But now, he was asking me things like.
"Why didn't you come see me today? Do you even remember we're married?"
I replied flatly, "Better to avoid rumors."
He instinctively retorted, "We're abroad!"
Before he could say more, my phone rang. Wendy was calling to tell me she was stuck outside the hotel.
At that moment, Simon noticed I was barefoot and sneered, "Who are you so excited about? No wonder you've been acting so … "
"It's none of your business," I cut him off coldly.
Just as he used to say to me whenever I questioned him about Hannah.
I threw on my clothes, slipped into my shoes and didn't even spare a glance for Simon as I bolted downstairs.
Wendy handed me a thick stack of notebooks and we found a quiet spot together.
She watched me nervously, worried I'd have second thoughts.
I gave her a bitter smile. "This time, I truly want to forget, Wendy. Three days—that's all that's left."
As I spoke, I lit a match.
The paper slowly turned to ash in the fire, just as my love for you faded.
I handed Wendy a new journal. "Three days from now, give this back to me."
The Swiss Alps were breathtaking, their peaks seeming to melt into the clear blue sky.
Chapter 5
The show arranged for us to go skiing and everyone was in the locker room, changing into ski gear.
Hannah blinked her big eyes at Simon. "Simon, can you help me fasten my helmet strap?"
Simon smiled indulgently, stepped forward and carefully fastened her strap. He even meticulously checked all her equipment.
Noticing my gaze, Simon turned around helplessly and was about to come over to fasten mine.
I took a step back and buckled it myself.
He let out a cold huff, seemingly annoyed by my rejection.
Since it was the last day, I didn't bother arguing with him.
While checking my phone, I saw that Simon had sent me several messages over the past two days. Another one had just come in.
I scrolled through them one by one.
The first was. "Are you playing hard to get? That won't work on me."
The latest one read. "Even jealousy has its limits. Keep this up and don't expect me to talk to you when we get back."
Still as arrogant as ever, acting like I was waiting for his attention.
With two hours left before the end of filming, I didn't hesitate to block his number.
The recording wrapped up quickly and the crew gave us free time to enjoy the snowy mountain.
I wanted to avoid Simon and Hannah, but they seemed to haunt me wherever I went.
Simon cleared his throat. "You don't know how to ski either, right? It's no extra trouble to teach two. Why don't you join us?"
Hannah wasn't happy but still pretended to be kind. "Yes, Claire. You're older and probably not a fast learner. Please come along."
I responded coldly, "I don't think I'm as clumsy as you."
Simon frowned unconsciously and defended Hannah, "What do you mean? Hannah was just being nice to you and you're so sarcastic!"
I ignored them and tried it myself, but I could feel Simon's eyes burning into me.
Just as I was about to respond, someone shouted. "Avalanche! Run!"
Before I knew it, a thick wave of snow rushed down the mountain.
It looked like a monstrous snow creature about to engulf us all.
I was closest to the avalanche. My heart pounded as the snow surged towards me and my legs became jelly.
I looked at Simon, silently pleading for help.
He called out to me and started to come over, but then I heard Hannah's terrified voice.
"Simon, I'm scared!"
She was far away and in no danger, but Simon's expression shifted.
Then he turned without a second thought and ran towards her.
I watched him walk away, a bitter smile playing on my lips as I counted to three in my head.
The alarm blared and with it, my memories of him vanished.
I woke up in a hospital room with my left arm in a cast.
My head throbbed painfully, my mind a jumbled mess.
Wendy was just as she had been when she was twenty, her head buried beside my bed. She even cried in her sleep.
I must've made her cry again.
Next to her was a sticky note instructing me to take the journal from her bag.
I retrieved the journal but felt like something was missing. The harder I tried to remember, the more it hurt.
So, I gave up.
I was supposed to be reminiscing, but I wanted a fresh start before I lost my memory.
The final entry in the diary read. "May we no longer dwell in the past and instead look forward to a brighter future."
Closing the diary, a man entered the room with a grim expression.
He looked slightly remorseful, but his tone was still condescending as he spoke. "I was wrong this time, but you know Hannah is still young … "
