Chapter 1 of My Wedding with the Mafia Boss, and You Won’t Be There

Years ago, my father—the Don—had already decided my future for me. The alliance had been negotiated quietly, like all dangerous things in our world. Now that I’d survived my illness, now that I was no longer weak enough to be questioned, my mother finally brought it up.

“The marriage your father arranged,” she said carefully over the line. “Now that you’re stable… are you prepared to honor it?”

There was no pause. No doubt.

“Yes,” I replied without warmth. “Tell the Don to move forward. Contracts, signatures, witnesses—handle it all. And make sure the ceremony doesn’t look cheap. I’m not doing this for love. I’m doing it to secure my position.”

My tone didn’t shock her. She’d raised me in blood and balance sheets; sentimentality had never survived long in our house. She agreed, offered logistical notes like we were discussing a weapons shipment, not my wedding. I added my own requirements—names to exclude, families to seat carefully, optics to control—then ended the call.

That night was supposed to belong to Cassandra.

Her birthday.

A private weekend aboard Antonio’s yacht.

Crystal glasses, designer dresses, staged laughter from people who smiled too wide and meant too little.

Instead, I stood frozen as I watched my best friend press her mouth to my boyfriend’s.

Antonio.

Upper deck. Ocean lights glittering behind them. A smear of frosting lingered on her cheek, and his palms rested easily on her waist, intimate and unashamed. Nearby, Diego—Antonio’s brother, the same man who once walked me home like an overprotective sibling—handed her a towel as if this were nothing more than a clumsy accident.

Cassandra.

The girl who’d sworn loyalty to me when we were nine. Who braided my hair and promised she’d never touch anything that belonged to me. Now she was slowly licking icing from Antonio’s fingers, her smile lazy, deliberate—like she wanted to be seen.

And Antonio?

The man who’d bled beside me.

The man who once swore I was his future, his wife, his queen.

He didn’t stiffen when I passed.

Didn’t avert his eyes.

Didn’t care.

I felt nothing crack. No scream tore out of me. I didn’t cry.

I turned away.

I went below deck, the salty night air heavy in my chest, my heart eerily still. I sank onto a velvet sofa inside one of the yacht’s private cabins and dialed my mother again.

Because revenge doesn’t begin with hysteria.

It begins with leverage.

And power has never come from tears.

Minutes later, the click of heels echoed down the stairway. Then a knock—light, theatrical.

“Serafina?” came a voice coated in sugar.

I didn’t respond. The door opened anyway.

Cassandra drifted in like she owned the place, balancing a Black Forest cake with a single candle burning at its center. Her face was flawless—perfect lashes, perfect lips—but streaks of whipped cream marked her cheek. Intentional. Always calculated.

“Will you come back upstairs?” she asked sweetly. “Everyone’s wondering where you went.”

I didn’t even turn my head. “No. I have business to handle.”

Something sharp flickered across her expression before she masked it. Not hurt—strategy.

“You avoid me lately,” she murmured. “It’s because you don’t like me anymore, isn’t it?”

I arched a brow. “Are we really repeating this routine?”

Her lashes fluttered. Tears gathered instantly, summoned on command. I’d watched her use that face on Antonio more times than I could count.

“Not tonight, Cassandra,” I said coldly. “Save the act for people who still buy it.”

I moved toward the door.

That’s when she staggered backward, gasping dramatically as the cake slipped from her hands and smashed against her chest. Chocolate and cream exploded across her dress, thick and obscene, like evidence sprayed across a crime scene.

Right on schedule, Antonio and Diego appeared at the top of the stairs.

They rushed to her, shoving past me as if I were invisible.

“Lavi—what happened?” Antonio demanded, already reaching for her.

She clutched the ruined cake, trembling. “She pushed me,” she sobbed. “I just wanted to bring her something nice. For old times. And she—she slammed it into me.”

I stared at her, disbelief burning sharp. “Are you serious?”

Diego’s face darkened. “What the hell is wrong with you, Serafina?”

“I didn’t lay a finger on her,” I snapped. “She dropped it herself. None of you saw anything, but you’re ready to convict me anyway?”

Antonio didn’t look at me. He focused only on wiping frosting from Cassandra’s shoulder like it burned.

“Does it hurt?” he asked softly.

She leaned into him, fragile as glass. “It’s fine… I shouldn’t have tried. She hates me now.”

“You were everything to her,” Diego shot at me. “She called you her sister. Her only real friend. And you do this? Because you’re jealous?”

Jealous.

A quiet laugh slipped out of me—thin, bitter. “You two should star in a daytime drama. All you’re missing is a secret baby.”

Antonio turned on me then, fury tightening his jaw. “You’re apologizing. Right now.”

I blinked. “Pardon?”

“You heard me,” he growled. “Say you’re sorry to her.”

I crossed my arms. “No.”

His eyes hardened. “Then forget the engagement. No apology by tomorrow, no proposal next month. It’s over.”

The air went dead.

Diego snorted. “Why would you even want to marry her? Look at her. If I were you, I’d never take a woman like that as my wife.”

I tilted my head, gaze sharp as a blade.

“That’s why no one ever will,” I said calmly.

Diego flushed. Antonio’s jaw twitched. Cassandra glowed—thriving on the destruction she’d engineered.

I turned toward the railing to leave—

And suddenly Antonio’s hand clamped around my wrist.

Before I could react, he shoved me.

Over the side.

Into the sea.

The impact stole my breath. Ice-cold water stabbed into me as darkness closed in. My lungs seized. Panic clawed up my throat.

I couldn’t scream.

I couldn’t breathe.

My hands broke the surface, flailing uselessly. Salt burned my mouth as the water dragged me down. I couldn’t swim.

They knew that.

“Serafina!” Cassandra shrieked from above. “Someone help—she can’t swim!”

Her voice carried panic.

But her tone didn’t.

“Leave her,” Antonio said flatly, looking down at me like a judge delivering sentence. “That’s what she gets for making trouble. Maybe she’ll learn.”

My strength failed.

The world tilted.

Then—arms cut through the water.

Strong. Unknown.

A grip locked around my waist, hauling me upward.

“I’ve got you,” a low voice said—steady, unfamiliar, commanding.

My head broke the surface. I coughed violently, gasping for air as the sea released me.

And somewhere above, the Don’s world began to shift—whether they knew it yet or not.
