Chapter 2
When I returned home, Uncle Patrick had already come out of the operating room, and my grandparents were also there.
The doctor gave the same statement as in the previous life, paralysis, and bedridden.
Sure enough, as soon as the words fell, my aunt and a few others stared at me, "Rebecca, look at your uncle's situation. I still need to work and take care of Nina. Otherwise, you can drop out of school. Anyway, you have already gone to college, and it will be easy to find a job later. Your uncle's situation can't afford to delay."
"Auntie, don't blame me for speaking bluntly. In these years, I have given all my scholarships to my family. I am not a freeloader. According to reason, I must take care of you when you are sick. But dropping out of school is excessive. Moreover, I remember that Uncle's construction site is insured, and there will be compensation at that time. My university mentor will take me on a project soon. Even if I am just a small student, I can still get tens of thousands. What do you think, who is more suitable to take care of Uncle, me or you? Maybe, Uncle will have insurance compensation. We might as well hire a nanny to take care of Uncle first. I am a girl, and it is not convenient for me to take care of Uncle. What do you think?
After I finished speaking, my aunt and the others had already changed their faces.
But I had made up my mind in this life not to be manipulated by their gratitude for raising me, especially not to drop out of school. Otherwise, the tragedy of the previous generation would repeat itself.
Aunt never expected that I would resist and said, "Rebecca, you are selfish. When your mother died and your uncle wanted to adopt you, I disagreed. Now, your uncle is in such difficulty, and you don't even want to take care of him. How did we raise such an ungrateful person like you?"
As she spoke, she slapped herself and burst into tears, even falling down beside Uncle Patrick's sickbed and saying, "Look at what you have done. Now people can see clearly that you have worked for nothing."
Uncle Patrick was also a person who could act. As soon as he woke up, his voice became wooden, "I just wanted... to be worthy of my sister, but I didn't expect... I didn't expect to be an... an ungrateful person."
He said with a sense of grievance, and the other patients in the same ward started whispering.
Most of them were condemning me. I sneered silently. They had used this moral kidnapping many times in their previous lives.
But because I had illusions about them, I always softened before.
Just when my aunt thought she had the upper hand, I suddenly heard a cold voice interrupting, "Who dares to make Rebecca drop out of school?"
I turned around and saw Auntie Iris rushing over in a hurry.
She was dusty all the way, and her delicate hair was blown messy by the wind.
But she didn't care, just casually tidied up and continued to say to Uncle's family, "After so many years, is it not enough for you to make Rebecca work like a horse? You even want her to drop out of school? Don't you feel guilty?"
I didn't know if it was because of Auntie Iris' aura, but I suddenly felt that Uncle's family and my grandparents all had guilty expressions.
But Auntie Iris didn't stop there. She looked at me and asked, "Rebecca, you have come back, what about Nina? Doesn't she know that her dad had an accident?"
I shook my head, "Auntie Iris, I'm not sure either. Before I came back, Aunt said she would call her, but I haven't seen Nina yet."
Auntie Iris immediately became unhappy.
"She's already grown up. Her own father is like this, but she doesn't show any concern. What does that mean? Isn't she always boasting about how much she loves her family?"
After she finished speaking, I immediately took out my phone and wanted to call Nina.
I saw an update on Instagram, showing her boyfriend celebrating her birthday.
Auntie Iris got angry right away. Before Aunt could react, she used my phone to call Nina.
On the other end, a very impatient voice said, "Rebecca, my mom told you to drop out of school and take care of my dad. Do you have time to call me?"
Chapter 3
After she finished speaking, she found that I was silent, and then impatiently asked, "Why aren't you answering? If there's nothing, hang up, and don't delay my date with my boyfriend."
"Nina, give you one hour, immediately come to the hospital. You dare to be so arrogant after stealing someone else's life. Try saying one more word about Rebecca?" Auntie Iris spoke up.
Nina immediately paused for a moment and then said, "Auntie Iris, I was just joking with my sister. I'm on my way."
Auntie Iris didn't listen to her explanation and hung up the phone directly after notifying her.
Then she looked at the others in the room and said, "There are some things I don't want to say too harshly, but Rebecca is Ivana's daughter. When she passed away, I said I wanted to take Rebecca away, but you disagreed. Over the years, I thought you would always care and treat Rebecca better with blood ties. But now it seems that you not only enjoy everything Ivana left behind but also blame her daughter. When you have nightmares, aren't you afraid that Ivana will stand at the foot of your bed and ask if you feel guilty?"
Sure enough, as soon as she finished speaking, I saw several people's faces turn pale.
I also heard some important information and asked my aunt, "What does it mean, Auntie Iris? What did my parents leave for me?"
My aunt touched my head and said, "Your mother loves you so much, how could she hope that you would live poorly?"
As soon as she finished speaking, Uncle Patrick interrupted, "Iris, you came back to see me and still want to cause trouble? I'm already paralyzed. Even if you think it's inappropriate for Rebecca to come back, you can't erase the years of nurturing she received from me. I treated Rebecca as same as Nina."
He had just finished the surgery and started coughing because he spoke too forcefully.
I wanted to speak, but I was interrupted by Auntie Iris, "What? Do you want me to settle accounts with you in front of everyone? Your daughter is living a luxurious life, while Rebecca has to rely on others and live like a servant. And now you are using the favor of raising her to threaten her? Let me tell you, no matter what happens today, you cannot continue to hinder Rebecca's life."
My grandma wanted to say something but was stopped by my grandpa.
They gathered together, looking at the unhappy expressions on Auntie Iris' and my face.
These days, I had been on leave to take care of Uncle Patrick. My aunt told me not to go back to school until Uncle Patrick's stitches were removed, and some issues needed to be resolved.
My aunt looked at Auntie Iris and said, "Iris, what are you saying? Do you think that speaking out is not for your own sake?"
"Then you don't need to know. Rebecca is already an adult, and there are some things she needs to know the truth about."
Finally, my grandpa couldn't bear it anymore and came over to slap Auntie Iris, "Do you have to break up your brother's family before you stop?"
Auntie Iris turned her head and, after being slapped, continued, "If you hadn't favored him than me, maybe you would have had both sons and daughters and wouldn't have lived such a miserable life."
After saying that, Auntie Iris led me out of the house.
I looked at the handprint on her face, feeling a mix of emotions. I didn't expect Auntie Iris to do this for me.
In my previous life, I thought it would be difficult to get rid of them, but unexpectedly, Auntie Iris appeared and she really helped me solve all the problems.
I bought disinfectant for her and applied it to her fingerprints.
She smiled and said, "This is the Moore family. They don't care about anything except their son. But ironically, your uncle also had a daughter, and he loves her so much."
Nina did receive preferential treatment.
She grew up well and came from a good family. So I didn't have a good time in middle school and high school because of her.
