Chapter 1 of My Stepson Evicted Me for His Dad's Mistress

I spent seven years raising another woman's son in the freezing Swiss Alps.

When I married Julian, the Von Weber family was drowning in debt.

I took out a loan in my own name to save their heritage.

I stayed up for three weeks hand-sewing a bear-hunter costume for my stepson, Leo, just to see him smile.

They promised me I was the heart of the family.

But as the winter gala approached, Clara returned.

She was Julian’s first love, bringing a daughter she claimed was his.

Suddenly, my favorite dresses were missing from my closet, given to her.

Suddenly, Leo refused to eat the meals I cooked, calling them "foreign trash."

I thought it was just a rough transition until I walked past the study.

The door was slightly ajar, letting the harsh fireplace light spill onto the Persian rug.

"The lawyer already amended the trust fund," Leo's voice was full of excitement. "Clara is the new general manager now!"

"Keep your voice down," Julian sighed, though he sounded relieved.

"She doesn't belong here anyway," Leo sneered. "I finally have my real mom back."

"Just wait until after the Christmas board meeting," Julian whispered coldly. "Then we kick her out without a single cent."

The velvet jacket hit the marble floor and slid across the toes of my shoes.

"I spent three weeks hand-sewing that costume for your winter play, Leo," I said, staring at my fifteen-year-old stepson.

His harsh laugh scraped down the corridor. "And it looks like trash. Clara bought me a real suit. A custom Italian cut. Not this homemade garbage."

"I missed three board meetings to finish those seams," I reminded him, keeping my voice even.

"Nobody asked you to," Leo shot back. "You're just trying too hard. You're my dad's wife, not my mother. Clara actually gets me. She doesn't force me to wear cheap rags."

He ground the heel of his sneaker into the gold embroidery. The fabric tore with a sickening rip.

Seven years of raising this boy. Seven years of cooking his meals, attending his parent-teacher conferences, and trying to build a family. All of it reduced to dirt on a hallway floor.

"Clara said you only made it to make yourself look like a good mom," Leo added, kicking the torn velvet toward the wall. "She said you're fake."

"Fine," I said, refusing to let him see the sting in my eyes. "Wear what you want. I won't bother you again."

I stepped over the ruined fabric and walked away.

The oak doors to the executive boardroom stood slightly ajar at the end of the hall.

Laughter drifted out into the quiet corridor, followed by the crisp clinking of crystal glasses.

"To Clara," Julian's voice rang out, clear and commanding. "The new vice president of the Edelweiss Grand Hotel."

My chest tightened. Julian, my husband of seven years, was giving away the position I had earned. I spent five years turning the Edelweiss from a failing property into a five-star resort. I worked eighty-hour weeks while he golfed with investors.

"She deserves it," a board member chimed in. "Clara has the right vision for our future."

"Thank you, Julian," Clara replied. "I promise to make you proud."

I pushed the oak doors wide open. The hinges groaned in protest, cutting off the celebration.

Silence swept through the room. Twelve board members lowered their champagne flutes, staring at me.

Julian stood at the head of the long mahogany table. His tailored charcoal suit fit perfectly. He flashed a practiced, easy smile, the one he saved for the press and his mistresses.

"Aria, darling," Julian said, raising his glass higher. "You made it just in time to celebrate."

"Celebrate your new vice president?" I asked, walking straight past the bewildered executives.

"We decided to take the hotel in a new direction," Julian explained, his tone smooth with condescension. "You've been working so hard lately. I want you to rest. Clara will handle the daily operations."

"By taking my office," I stated.

"It's just business, Aria. Don't be dramatic in front of the board."

"Business?" I laughed, a short, humorless sound. "I secured the Michelin star for the restaurant. I negotiated the union contracts. I brought our occupancy rate from forty percent to ninety-five. Which part of that business requires me to rest?"

"Clara has a fresh perspective," Julian countered, his jaw tightening. "She understands the modern luxury market."

"She understands how to spend your money," I replied.

I stopped at the edge of the table, right next to the silver ice bucket chilling a bottle of Dom Pérignon.

I unzipped my leather portfolio and drew out seven neatly tabbed sections.

I slammed the papers down onto the polished wood. Champagne flutes rattled from the impact. The bright red seal on the top page glared under the chandelier lights, mocking the festive mood.

"What's this?" Julian asked. His practiced smile vanished.

"Divorce papers," I said, my voice steady enough to carry across the room. "Already signed."

Gasps echoed around the table. An older board member coughed nervously and looked away.

"Have you lost your mind?" Julian demanded, leaning over the table. "You're making a scene."

"I'm making an exit," I corrected him. "Seven pages detailing exactly how we separate our lives."

Julian's jaw tightened. He reached for the document.

As he reached for the papers, his shirt cuff rode up. The vintage Patek Philippe watch gleamed on his wrist.

I pointed right at the diamond-encrusted dial. "I took on five million dollars of debt to buy you that antique for our anniversary, Julian. I mortgaged my own mother's estate to secure that loan. You swore you'd wear it forever as a symbol of our partnership."

Julian froze. He glanced at the board members, who were suddenly very interested in their shoes.

"You're embarrassing yourself," Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"No, Julian. I'm freeing myself." I pushed the divorce papers closer to him. "Keep the watch. Consider it a parting gift for a failed investment."

"You can't just walk away," Julian hissed, his composure cracking. "You have obligations to this company."

"I'm resigning from the Edelweiss Grand Hotel, effective immediately," I added, looking around the table. "Good luck running this place without me."

"Aria, stop this nonsense right now." Julian lunged forward. His fingers snapped around my forearm.

His grip dug in hard enough to bruise. I yanked my arm back, breaking his hold.

"Don't touch me," I warned, stepping out of his reach.

Clara stepped away from the window in a pristine white silk dress, every detail arranged to make her look innocent.

She picked up a sleek silver pen and held it out, her eyes wide with feigned concern.

"Aria, please don't be angry," Clara said, her voice laced with artificial sweetness. "Julian only wants what's best for the company. We both do. We never meant to hurt your feelings."

"Keep your excuses," I told her. "And keep my husband."

"If you really want to leave, that's your choice," Clara continued, ignoring my insult. She slid a single sheet of paper across the table, placing it right over my divorce agreement.

I glanced down. The bold text at the top read: *Waiver of Marital Assets.*

"Julian's family has always worried you only married him for the money," Clara murmured. She spoke loud enough for every executive in the room to hear. "If you truly love him, why not sign this? Prove them wrong. Leave with exactly what you came with."

"You want me to walk away with nothing?" I asked.

"I just think it's the honorable thing to do," Clara replied softly. "You always talk about how independent you are. Unless, of course, you really are just a gold digger."

Julian crossed his arms. He watched me with a challenging smirk, clearly expecting me to back down. "She has a point, Aria. If you're so eager to leave, prove you aren't trying to rob me blind on the way out."

The boardroom remained dead silent. The executives held their breath.

I looked at Julian. Seven years of loyalty, and he was trying to leave me destitute.

I took the silver pen from Clara's outstretched fingers.

I pressed the metal tip against the signature line.
