Chapter 1 of My Stepsister is the real Mother of my Son

It was my son’s fifth birthday when everything changed. One second he was running around the living room with his tiny paper crown, and the next, he was lying still on the floor. We rushed him to the hospital.

I thought it was exhaustion. Maybe low blood sugar. Anything but what the doctor said next.

“Mrs. Smith,” the doctor began carefully, “your son’s kidneys are failing. It’s a chronic disease. He’ll need a transplant soon.”

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. The word disease hung in the air like smoke.

“Kidney?” I repeated weakly. “But… how? He’s just a child.”

The doctor nodded slowly. “It might be hereditary. We’ll need to run genetic tests. Sometimes these conditions pass down through the parents.”

Hereditary. My mind went blank. No one in my family had ever had kidney problems. My parents were healthy. My grandparents lived long lives, even in my husband’s family.

Still, I nodded numbly. “Then test me,” I said quickly. “I’ll donate if it will match. Take whatever he needs. Just make him better.”

Two days later, I sat in the cold hospital room, waiting for the results. Stephen wasn’t with me; he was “handling business,” as always. The doctor entered, a file in hand, her expression unreadable.

“Mrs. Smith,” she said quietly, “I’m afraid there’s a complication. Your blood type doesn’t match his.”

I frowned. “That’s impossible. I’m O positive, and Jackson—”

“—is AB negative,” she said softly.

I blinked, confused. “That… can’t be. That’s not possible.”

The doctor sat across from me. “There’s more,” she said gently. “We ran a full genetic screening. Mrs. Smith… you’re not biologically related to him. The DNA shows no maternal link. I don’t know how else to tell you this, but… you were never pregnant.”

For a second, I thought I hadn’t heard her right. “No,” I whispered, shaking my head. “That’s wrong. I remember everything. The morning sickness. The delivery. The nurses. The baby in my arms. I—”

“Sometimes,” she said carefully, “medication or trauma can cause false memories. Did you take any medication during the time you were thinking you were pregnant?”

I froze. Medication. Back then, Stephen had always brought me these small white pills — said they were vitamins for the baby. I took them every day without question.

“Mrs. Smith,” the doctor said again, “is it possible someone gave you something that could have affected your memory or hormones?”

My lips parted, but no words came out. I left the hospital feeling like my body was hollow. The world spun around me, voices and sounds fading into nothing. I clutched my bag tightly, my fingers trembling.

Never pregnant. Not my son.

The words repeated over and over in my head until I could barely breathe

By the time I reached home, I was shaking. I needed proof. That bottle — the one Stephen had always handed me — it was still somewhere in the drawer of our bedroom. I just needed to see it.

As I walked down the hall, I heard voices. I stopped.

It was Stephen and Layla — my stepsister.

“…come on, Stephen,” she was saying, her voice sharp with worry. “Our child is sick. He needs the transplant soon or he’ll die.”

I froze where I stood. Our child.

My heart dropped.

Layla continued, “And when are you going to divorce Charlotte? When can I be a real mother to our son, and not just Auntie? I don’t want to stay in the background while he’s suffering!”

Stephen’s voice was calm, too calm. “You need to relax. I told you, once the inheritance and the company merger go through, I’ll take care of Charlotte and dispose of her. Just wait a little more… about a month.”

Layla’s tone rose, panicked. “And what if Charlotte finds out she’s not his mother? They’ll do a test, and surely she will be willing to donate. Everything will come out, and she might ruin everything!”

Stephen chuckled lightly. “Then I’ll make her take the medicine again. The same one I gave her years ago that made her believe she even got pregnant when the truth that she was never pregnant. It’s you who got pregnant with Jackson. She’ll believe whatever I want her to because she loves me that much.”

I slapped a hand over my mouth, my knees almost giving out.

Layla’s voice trembled with fury. “You’d better keep your word, Stephen. If you don’t get rid of her soon, I will. I’m not watching her live in my place any longer.”

He sighed. “You know I love you, Layla. I was forced to marry her because of her father and my father. You were always the one I wanted.”

She laughed bitterly. “Yeah, I hated being her stepsister, but as long as I have you… I don’t care.”

There was a soft sound — a kiss.

My stomach turned. I pressed a hand against the wall to keep from collapsing.

Each word burned deeper, like fire under my skin. My entire marriage, my entire life — all of it was a lie. I thought back to the day I said yes to him. We had been friends since high school, the three of us — me, Stephen, and Layla. I used to think they were just close. That their bond was pure friendship.

How blind I was.

I remembered our wedding day — the way he smiled at me, the promises he made, the home we built. I remembered holding my son — or what I thought was my son — and feeling like my world was complete.

And now I knew. It was all built on lies.

I don’t remember how long I stood there, frozen. All I knew was that I couldn’t stay another minute. I ran to the guest room, grabbed my phone, and called the one person I swore I’d never speak to again — my mother.

She answered on the second ring, her voice surprised. “Charlotte?”

I took a deep breath, tears streaming down my face. “Mom… you once said you wanted me to marry that dying man to protect our family.”

“Yes,” she said cautiously. “Why?”

“I’ll do it,” I said firmly, voice breaking. “I’ll marry him. Just… please, come get me. Take me away from here. Stephen fooled me. Everything’s a lie.”
