Chapter 1 of My Son Signed Away My Right to Be His Mother

Kai slid the small amber pill bottle back across the oak breakfast table.

"Sophie says a nine-year-old Alpha heir shouldn't have his temperature and tongue color checked every single morning," he said, fixing his gaze on his half-eaten toast.

Sophie sat in the chair that usually belonged to me at the head of the table. She added honey to her tea, stirring it with a silver spoon. "Giving a child bodily autonomy is a healthy boundary, Aria."

I kept my jaw relaxed. I didn't argue with the counselor. Instead, I reached for the grey-blue moon-phase care notebook resting near my plate. I had filled its pages every single day for a year. I flipped it open to last night's entry and slid it toward my husband.

"His tongue color indicates the heat level in his blood," I told Ronan, pointing at the fresh ink. "He had a high fever at two in the morning. He almost shifted alone in his room. The clinic orders are clear. He takes his medication today."

Ronan didn't even look at the handwritten notes. He pushed the plastic bottle back to my side of the placemat.

"Aria, you are his mother, not his warden," Ronan said.

The words landed like a physical blow in the quiet dining room. Four years ago, when Kai was five, Grey Wolf Fever had burned through his system, stripping his ability to hold a stable shift. I gave my matching Moonblood three times in thirty-six hours to pull him back from the edge of death. Now, my vigilance made me a warden.

"Children pick up on parental anxiety," Sophie chimed in, setting her teacup down. "When you hover, he feels defective."

"I'm not defective!" Kai's voice rose, carrying a sharp edge I hadn't heard before. He glared at me. "I don't want to be monitored anymore."

He looked at Sophie, seeking her nod of approval. He had never openly sided against me in front of his father. I stared at Sophie's serene smile. She wasn't teaching my son independence. She was teaching him a new vocabulary, one perfectly designed to reframe my care as abuse.

"We will discuss this in the counseling session," I said, capping the pill bottle.

The morning family consultation was supposed to address Kai's recent insomnia. Instead, Sophie pulled a tablet from her leather tote the moment we sat in the living room.

"I need you to agree to include family behavioral recordings in the parent-child stress assessment, Aria," Sophie said, placing the device on the coffee table.

"What recordings?" I asked.

Before I could get an answer, she tapped the screen. A video started playing. My own voice echoed through the room, loud and strained. On the digital display, I grabbed Kai's shoulder in the dark upstairs hallway.

"Kai, stop! You can't go out there!" the recorded version of me yelled.

"Get off me!" Kai shouted on the screen.

"Go back to your room right now," I snapped in the video, pulling him away from the wall.

Kai shrank back into the sofa cushions in the living room, pulling his knees to his chest. "That's why I feel unsafe," he mumbled, pointing a trembling finger at the tablet.

"You cut the first ten seconds," I said, keeping my tone dangerously even. "You cut the part where he tore open the second-floor window lock. He was about to jump into the backyard mid-shift."

Ronan didn't pause the assessment. He didn't ask Kai about the broken window lock. He turned his Alpha gaze entirely on me.

"You're missing the point, Aria," Ronan said. "Look at his face in the video. Look at how he flinches when you grab him."

"He flinched because he was fighting a fever dream, Ronan. Not because of me. The moon was full. If he jumped from that window, he would have broken his legs before the shift completed."

"Why do you always have to prove you're right, Aria?" Ronan asked, his voice dropping into a low growl.

I looked down at my left hand. The diamond caught the harsh overhead light. Five years ago, Ronan slid that exact ring onto my finger. I was nineteen. He asked me to move into the Pack House and be a mother to his four-year-old boy. The day Kai first called me Mom, Ronan kissed my temple and told me I had finally made this massive, echoing building a home.

Now, the same man sat across from me, letting a hired counselor dictate whether I was a safe mother.

"I'm not trying to be right," I said. "I am trying to keep him alive."

"We're done for this morning," Ronan announced, standing up abruptly. "Sophie, take Kai to the garden."

By three o'clock, the Pack House felt suffocatingly quiet. I walked toward Ronan's study, carrying the care notebook under my arm. I intended to drop off last year's night-shift charts and leave before another argument started.

Voices stopped me outside the study door.

"The Council can authorize temporary supervision before the full assessment," Sophie said inside. "The videos show an immediate emotional-safety concern."

I pushed the door open.

Ronan sat behind his desk with a Council form pulled up on the monitor. Sophie stood beside him. My care notebook lay open between them, several pages marked with yellow tabs.

"You filed a family-safety referral without telling me?" I asked.

Ronan's expression hardened. "I asked for a neutral review."

"A neutral review does not begin with edited clips supplied by your childhood friend. Give the Council the original server files."

Sophie folded her arms. "The originals are being collected. Until then, reducing unsupervised contact is a standard precaution."

"Reducing contact?"

Ronan turned the monitor toward me. The proposed order limited me to one supervised hour with Kai at a time and prohibited private medical decisions until the preliminary evaluation ended.

My pulse kicked hard. "You are putting me under supervision because I stopped a feverish child from jumping out a second-floor window."

"I am giving Kai room to speak without worrying about your reaction," Ronan said.

The garden door opened behind me. Kai stepped into the hall with dirt on his knees and Sophie’s spare sweater around his shoulders.

"I want Sophie in the sessions," he said.

I looked at him. "Did someone tell you I would be removed if you asked for that?"

His face closed immediately. "See? You always make everything a test."

Ronan signed the temporary form with a hard stroke of the stylus.

My communicator chimed before the screen finished refreshing.

Temporary family-safety order approved. All contact with minor heir Kai Grey must be supervised pending Council review.

I closed the care notebook and held it against my chest.

For the first time since Kai nearly died in my arms, keeping him safe no longer gave me the right to stand beside him.
