Chapter 1 of My Son Gave Daddy's Mistress My Mother's Day Gift

I wore the blue dress because Oliver once told me it made me look like the sky.

The paper bag in my hand was still warm. Blueberry muffins, his favorite, baked at five that morning so they'd be soft by the time the Mother's Day brunch at Westbrook Academy ended. I'd planned to slip them into his hands afterward and watch his whole face light up.

Seven years ago, in a hospital room that smelled like antiseptic and baby powder, Ryan had held my hand and kissed my knuckles.

"He's always going to know," he'd said. "You're the most important person in this family, Em. I swear."

I walked into the decorated gym, past pastel balloons and folding tables, and looked toward the front row.

The seat at the center had a white ribbon tied to its back and a gold plaque that read *Honored Mother*. Last week, the name card on that chair had said *Emma Carter*. I'd seen it when I dropped off the paper napkins.

Now the gold card said *Sophia Lane*.

Sophia sat in that chair in a pearl-white gown that belonged at a wedding, not a first-grade brunch. Oliver knelt at her feet, carefully smoothing the hem of her skirt so it fanned out just right.

He looked up and saw me.

"Mom, don't sit there," he said, loud enough for the moms nearby to turn. "That's Sophia's seat."

I stopped in the middle of the aisle.

Any other day, I would've crouched down to fix his crooked collar, the one he never let anyone else touch. Today I just stood there, holding a bag of muffins while my son guarded another woman's chair.

Oliver turned back to Sophia and unzipped his backpack.

Lately he'd started yanking that backpack away whenever I reached for it. He'd stopped letting me comb his hair, too, ducking from my hands like they were something sticky.

He pulled out a navy velvet jewelry box.

The school had asked every child to make a handprint card. This wasn't a handprint card. Oliver flipped the lid open, and a diamond necklace caught the gym lights.

I knew that box. It had come home last week in a glossy shopping bag from Larkin & Rowe. Ryan had tossed the bag on the kitchen island and said, "Client gift. Don't touch it."

I looked for my husband.

Ryan stood off to the side with his phone raised, a red dot blinking in the corner of his screen. He was smiling, the soft kind of smile I hadn't seen aimed at me in months.

Three months of *working late*. Three months of photos I'd scrolled past on other parents' feeds, Oliver at the aquarium, Oliver at a pizza place, a woman's manicured hand resting on his shoulder.

"Oliver," I said quietly, walking closer. "Where did you get that?"

He beamed at Sophia instead of me.

"Daddy helped me pick it. Sophia deserves something beautiful."

Sophia pressed a hand to her chest. "Oh, sweetheart. You didn't have to."

A small tag hung from the bow on the box. The paper was yellowed and soft at the edges, trimmed into a neat rectangle with a gold border.

I leaned in, and the ground seemed to tilt.

That slanted, looping handwriting. The way the *y* curled back on itself like a ribbon.

*My brave girl, you'll be*

The sentence was cut off where the scissors had gone through it.

It was my mother's last letter to me. She'd written it from her hospice bed, and I'd kept it in the memory box on my closet shelf for eleven years.

"Okay, everyone!" Ms. Albright, Oliver's teacher, tapped the microphone on the small stage. "Oliver, would you like to come up and introduce your mom?"

She glanced at me with a polite smile and gestured toward the podium. I moved to stand beside it, the way we'd rehearsed at home. Oliver had practiced his speech at the kitchen table for days and asked me not to listen.

He climbed the steps.

I held out my hand.

He walked right past it.

He went back down the other side, grabbed Sophia's fingers, and tugged her up onto the stage. She laughed, a little breathless, like she was embarrassed. She didn't look embarrassed.

Oliver pulled the microphone down to his height.

"This is Sophia," he said. "She takes me to fun places and she never yells about vegetables. She's the mom I wish I had."

Nobody moved. Somewhere behind me, a plastic cup tipped over.

Then Ryan started clapping.

He was the first, and the loudest. A few confused parents followed out of habit. Sophia bent and kissed Oliver's cheek, then took the bouquet of pink peonies Ms. Albright had been holding for the mother of the presenting child.

Ms. Albright looked at me. I looked at the flowers.

I stepped off the stage and walked straight to Ryan. I grabbed his sleeve hard enough to wrinkle the expensive fabric.

"That tag," I said. "Tell me that isn't my mother's letter."

He lowered the phone just enough to see me. "Emma."

"Tell me you didn't go into my memory box."

"I needed something vintage-looking. Oliver wanted it to feel special." He shrugged. "I only used one corner."

"You cut it."

"It was just an old letter, Emma." He pulled his arm free and smoothed his sleeve flat with two fingers. "Don't ruin his day."

Up on the stage, Sophia lifted the necklace for the crowd to see. My mother's handwriting swung gently under the diamonds, catching the light every time it turned.

I didn't stay for the muffins.

By the time I got home, Ryan had already posted the video.

*The two most important people in my life.*

Sophia and Oliver filled the frame, her arm around him, his face tipped up to hers. I wasn't in a single second of it. Two hundred likes. A comment from Sophia: *My heart is so full.*

I set my phone face down on the counter and went to start dinner, because that was what I did at five-thirty every night.

The grocery bags were still sitting by the sink, untouched. Chicken thighs, lemons, the frozen peas Oliver would only eat if I mashed them.

On the refrigerator door, held up by a magnet shaped like a dinosaur, was a yellow sticky note in my son's careful, wobbly print.

*You can be my mom at home. Sophia is prettier.*

I read it twice. Then I didn't read it anymore.

"Mom!" Oliver yelled from the living room over the sound of cartoons. "I'm hungry! When's dinner?"

Ryan's voice came next, easy and bored. "And can we not do a whole thing about the school stuff tonight? He had a great day. Just let it be."

I didn't answer.

The burner under the pot of water was glowing orange. I reached over and turned the knob to off. The coil slowly darkened.

I untied my apron, folded it into a neat square, and slid it into the drawer beside the dish towels. I twisted my wedding ring over my knuckle and set it on the counter next to the sticky note.

Then I went upstairs, pulled my black suitcase out of the closet, and packed. It didn't take long. Most of what was mine fit in one bag. The memory box stayed on the closet shelf, with a gap inside it where a letter used to lie whole.

When I came back down, Ryan was on the couch scrolling through his comments. Oliver was sprawled on the rug.

"Is dinner ready?" Oliver asked without looking up.

"No," I said. "Your dad's making it."

Ryan laughed. "Funny."

"I'm not joking." I set the suitcase upright. "You're on tonight, Ryan. Dinner, bath, his reading log. Tomorrow you pack his lunch and get him to school by eight. He needs his library book. It's under his bed."

Oliver sat up and frowned at me. "But you're supposed to do it."

"Then your father can be your parent at home tonight."

I took out my phone and dialed while they watched me. Denise Okafor picked up on the second ring. She'd handled my mother's estate, and she'd told me once to call her if I ever needed anything.

"Denise, it's Emma Carter. I need to set up a custody schedule. Starting tomorrow, if possible." I listened. "Yes. I'll send you everything tonight. Thank you."

I hung up.

Ryan's smile hadn't moved, but it had stopped meaning anything. It just sat on his face, stuck. The phone in his hand drifted down until it rested against his knee, the screen still glowing with Sophia's comment.

"Emma," he said slowly. "What the hell is this?"

I picked up the handle of the suitcase and rolled it toward the front door. The wheels rattled across the hardwood.

He was on his feet before I reached it, standing in the entryway like he could block it with his body.

"Where are you going?" For the first time all day, he raised his voice. "Emma! Where are you going?"

I stepped around him and opened the door. The evening air was cool on my face.

I didn't turn around.

"I'm going somewhere I'm not the consolation prize."
