Chapter 1 of My Sister's Ex Quarterback Became My Biggest Scandal

I became a sports reporter because one NFL scandal had already destroyed my family.

Four years ago, my sister Claire lost her national sideline job after dating quarterback Weston Cade, and I watched her pack rejection letters into grocery bags while his career kept climbing.

So when my editor assigned me to film Weston's entire season, I walked into the team facility ready to make him answer for what he did.

He recognized my last name before I asked my first real question.

I asked why Claire's career died while his survived.

Team PR tried to throw me out.

Weston stopped them.

He told them I could stay for the whole season, then looked straight at me and said, "If you want the truth, stop interviewing the headline."

For one dangerous second, I wanted to believe him.

Then I heard my executive producer talking behind the control-room door.

"Keep Riley on him all season."

"She'll burn us if she learns why you chose her."

"Her sister gave me the biggest scandal of my career."

"Now Riley Bennett can give me the sequel."

"Did your editor actually confirm this assignment?" Tessa asked.

Her manicured nail tapped the laminated card resting against my chest.

"Nadia signed off on it yesterday," I said, keeping my tone even. "The network cleared my credentials."

Tessa Hall, the team's head of public relations, flipped my temporary press pass over. Her eyes locked on my last name. Bennett.

"A twenty-three-year-old fresh out of journalism school," Tessa muttered. She dropped the lanyard as if the plastic burned her fingers. She wiped her hand on her tailored slacks. "To shoot Weston Cade's entire season. A season-long documentary requires experience. It requires boundaries."

"I'm transitioning from intern to full-time."

"Not with that name, you aren't."

"My name is on the approved list."

"Your name is a complication." Tessa crossed her arms. "I am texting your editor right now."

Four years ago, my sister Claire had been the golden girl of sideline reporting. She had the prime-time slot. She had the access. Then her secret relationship with Weston hit the tabloids. She was fired within days. I spent that entire winter at nineteen, helping her pack up her apartment. I shoved rejection letters and voided press credentials into cardboard boxes while she cried into her hands.

She had repeated endlessly that he chose the team over her. That he chose his fame.

I hadn't hidden my surname when I applied for the job. I just pointed my camera toward the training facility doors.

Weston Cade walked through the double doors. He wore a grey hoodie with a gym bag over one shoulder, taller and more imposing than the billboards made him look.

He stopped. His gaze dropped to my chest. To the word Bennett.

A muscle jumped in his jaw. He missed a step, just a fraction of a second, before his expression smoothed out into total neutrality.

"We're rolling," my cameraman, Dave, murmured from behind me.

"Ask him now," Nadia's voice buzzed in my earpiece. "Skip the playbook crap. Hit him with it."

I stepped directly into Weston's path, blocking his route to the locker room.

"The day Claire Bennett lost her job, why didn't you say a single word for her?"

Silence dropped over the corridor. The squeak of sneakers from the nearby gym faded out. Tessa froze mid-text, her phone hovering in the air.

Weston didn't flinch. He didn't yell. He just raised a hand toward Dave. "Cut the camera."

Dave kept the red light on.

"I said cut it," Weston repeated, his voice lowering.

Dave lowered the heavy lens.

"If you're here to play avenger for your sister," Weston said, his tone flat and controlled, "you don't get to call this a documentary. You call it a hit piece."

"At least Claire paid with her career," I shot back. I gripped my microphone tight enough to crack the plastic casing. "You only lost a relationship that was too inconvenient to make public. She lost everything."

His eyes turned completely cold. He closed the distance between us.

"Listen to me, intern," Weston said. He stepped close enough that I had to crane my neck to meet his stare. "Your sister didn't lose her job because I left her."

"She lost it because of you."

"If you're only prepared to believe that one version, don't waste my season."

The certainty I had carried for four years cracked. He sounded less defensive than exhausted, like a man tired of carrying someone else's version of the past.

"Shut it down," Tessa snapped. She marched between us, shoving her phone into her pocket. "We are done for the day. I want a new reporter by tomorrow morning. Get your gear out of my hallway."

"You can't pull her," Nadia's voice echoed.

The audio came from the open laptop sitting on the PR desk nearby, where my editor was monitoring the feed.

"The Bennett connection guarantees day-one viewership," Nadia continued over the speaker. "It's a goldmine. You want eyes on the team? This gets you eyes."

"It's a liability," Tessa argued, leaning over the laptop keyboard to yell into the microphone. "She just ambushed my franchise quarterback on day one. We agreed to a sports documentary, Nadia. Not a tabloid ambush."

"The contract says we have full access."

"The contract is void if she harasses the players."

I expected Weston to point me toward the exit.

Instead, he looked at Tessa. "Keep her."

Tessa spun around. "Weston, absolutely not. She is a walking lawsuit."

"I said keep her," he repeated. He turned back to me. "But I have a condition."

"I don't let subjects dictate the narrative," I said.

"You do today." He crossed his arms over his chest. "Any footage involving my family, my private life, or off-the-record conversations goes through my approval before it hits the final cut."

"That's censorship. I'm a journalist."

"You're a girl with a grudge holding a microphone," he corrected. "That's the deal. Any dispute we have, we settle on camera. No anonymous editing." He leaned in a fraction of an inch. "I would rather be followed by someone who hates me than let someone else decide what ten seconds the audience gets to see."

He wasn't burying the question. He was challenging me to find the answer. Walking away would hand my career back to my sister's old wounds.

"Fine," I said. "Deal."

Weston nodded once, adjusted the strap of his gym bag, and walked past me toward the locker room.

Thirty minutes later, the corridor sat empty. Dave had packed the gear and hauled it to the van, but my audio recorder flashed a low battery warning.

I pushed open the door to the auxiliary control room to grab a spare from my bag.

The room was dark, smelling of stale coffee and ozone. The feed from the PR desk laptop still hummed through the speakers. The remote meeting hadn't disconnected.

"Why didn't you keep the footage of her getting thrown out?" a man asked.

I froze. I recognized that raspy tone immediately. Grant Mercer, the executive producer.

"Tessa killed the shoot," Nadia replied over the speaker. "Besides, Riley doesn't know she was picked because of the Claire scandal. If we push too hard on day one, she'll walk."

"Does she know I produced the show four years ago?" Grant asked.

"No. She thinks this is a standard promotion from her internship."

Grant laughed, a dry, scraping sound that made my stomach turn. "Claire gave me the highest traffic week in network history. She bled out on national television, and the ratings were spectacular. Now I have the little sister and the exact same quarterback sharing a camera lens."

"We need to handle her carefully," Nadia warned.

"We need to push her to the edge," Grant corrected. "Nobody drops a sequel like this. I want her crying on camera by week three."

My pulse hammered against my ribs. I didn't push the door open. I didn't shout.

If Grant wanted to turn me into a sequel, he was going to regret giving me a camera.

I pulled my phone from my pocket, hit the voice memo app, and pressed record.

The red timer started ticking upward, capturing every word they said straight into my private cloud drive.
