Chapter 1
I had returned to the past with my younger sister, Wendy Anderson.
In the past, she had married a CEO. After we returned to the past, she insisted on snatching a security guard from me.
My parents favored her, so they almost passed out from anger when they learned that she was marrying a security guard.
She said nonchalantly, “Liam will be successful one day. Just you wait and see.”
In the first year of marriage, she gave birth to Liam Smith’s son, Charlie Smith. She was very smug about that.
She looked down on me, who gave birth to a daughter.
“Go away and don’t pass your bad luck to me. I’m planning to give birth to nine more sons for Liam. We’ll be a perfect family of ten sons.”
She expected a wealthy life ahead of her.
However, she did not know that Liam had a crazy wife back in the countryside. He also had seven difficult older sisters and three mean mothers and aunts that she would have to appease.
“Why are you not saving your nephew? You’re heartless, Ruby!”
I stared at Wendy Anderson, who demanded that I give her money for her son’s heart transplant surgery.
I suddenly regretted my decision to admit her to an expensive hospital ward.
In the past, she chose to marry Ben Reid, but she disliked Ben for leaving her alone most of the time.
Liam Smith would personally fetch me back to my mother’s place, so Wendy was jealous of my happy little life with him.
After she returned to the past, she cast her arrogance as an overseas scholar aside and chose to marry Liam, who was a security guard 15 years older than her.
She thought Liam would treat her very well. Instead, she did not expect him to ask her to work while she was pregnant. He even used her money to live lavishly.
A few years ago, I had just given her five hundred thousand dollars. She did not pay me back a single cent when she started to eye my money again.
“If I hadn’t given you the opportunity to marry a rich man, you’d be the one suffering! Why aren’t you saving my son? You should be saving him!”
I laughed in cold fury.
When I recalled all the disgusting things she had done in the past, I only solidified my decision to not loan her any money.
In the first incident, she had forced me to kneel down before her first unborn child.
We got married on the same day, and we went back to visit our parents on the same day too.
Liam and her had acted very lovingly during dinner.
Liam was cutting steaks and deboning fish for her.
As she ate, she suddenly started to attack me.
“Ruby, why didn’t Ben come back with you today? I heard he has a great relationship with all his secretaries.
“You’re too generous for allowing him to keep all these women after you got married.”
“He has a huge business to run, of course he’s busy. He won’t have as much time as the two of you.”
“Ruby, what are you trying to say? You’re being mean on purpose!”
Wendy tossed her fork aside and wanted to slap me.
Before she could slap me, she frowned and held her belly. Then, she cried out.
“Kneel down before me, Ruby!
“I’m pregnant! It’s your fault for offending me, that’s why my son is making my tummy hurt.”
After hearing that, everyone hovered over her carefully.
When I was not willing to back down to a pregnant woman, Wendy took great offense to it.
She started to complain to our parents, “Mom, dad, she’s not listening to me. But you know of my health condition.
“What if I give birth to an unhealthy child?”
“Ruby, quick, beg for your sister’s forgiveness! You won’t be able to make amends if anything happens to her baby!”
I was the true daughter of the Anderson family, and I only reconciled with them when I was in university.
I never had any deep bonds with my father like what Wendy had.
He would rather talk to Wendy about having a child out of wedlock in private than embarrass Wendy in front of an outsider like me.
I had no other choice.
I fell onto my knees and begged for forgiveness.
Unexpectedly, Wendy had jinxed herself.
Her first child had been healthy, but her second child was not.
On the same night, her second son died.
Chapter 2
Wendy also looked down on me for having a daughter.
It was a rainy day when I gave birth to my daughter, Olivia Reid.
Wendy was talking strangely the moment she stepped into my ward.
“Your daughter is going to get married to another man one day. What’s the point of having one? She’s going to flow away from you like the rain outside.”
At the same time, Ben walked in with Olivia in his arms.
Wendy snatched Olivia from Ben and started to criticize her.
“Her face is so crumpled, and her skin isn’t fair. Her eyes are too small! She must look ugly when she grows up. What if nobody wants her?
“She doesn’t look like Ben. I think she looks more like your ex-boyfriend.”
“Ruby doesn’t have an ex-boyfriend. Wendy, you’re remembering things wrongly.”
Even Ben could not stand Wendy. He turned to defend me.
Wendy was unhappy. She started to make up lies.
“Ruby has been lying to you. So many men were pursuing her back in university. She couldn’t have possibly gone through university without a boyfriend. In the past, she even snatched one of the guys who pursued me!”
I could no longer stand her. I was very angry and I wanted her out of my ward.
Ben’s parents arrived. They brought a lot of gifts, which were carried by their bodyguards.
I did not want to embarrass her, so I suppressed my anger.
Wendy watched as everyone talked to me and took care of me. Then, she thought of the time when she was in confinement after giving birth to her son, Charlie Smith. Liam had been unwilling to spend any money on her.
She felt a deep pang of jealousy.
“It’s only a daughter, why are you all being so smug?”
As she spoke, she took out a bottle of lotion. “Come, let me put some lotion on her legs.
“It’ll be bad if she grows up with ugly legs. No man would want her in the future.
“Your mother should be worried about this too.”
She ignored Olivia’s cries and pressed down on her legs firmly.
“What are you doing?”
My mother-in-law, Mariam Reid, was the closest to them. So she quickly snatched Olivia over and placed her in my arms.
“I’m doing this for Olivia’s own good! I’m doing this so that she’ll be able to get married to a good man in the future!”
Wendy still tried to take Olivia from me.
The bodyguards immediately surrounded her.
“She’s my granddaughter, not yours. We’re not simply putting any lotion on her. Put it on yourself instead!”
Mariam was extremely furious.
“Why are you putting some random lotion on a baby? I thought you were educated! You should know you can’t simply destroy a baby’s skin barrier!”
My father-in-law, Peter Reid, was usually a good-tempered man. He was furious as well.
“Hey, who wants a daughter anyway! You’re all treating her like she’s some sort of treasure.
“I wouldn’t want you to pass your bad luck to me. I’d still want to give birth to nine more sons for Liam so we’ll be a perfect family!”
After Wendy said that, she left and slammed the door behind her.
Olivia cried from the shock.
I looked down and coaxed her. Then, I saw a bruise the size of a finger on her thigh.
Wendy still showed up the next day.
However, she did not enter my ward. She went to other wards with women who gave birth to sons and gave them gifts.
She even helped them to the toilet and took care of their sons.
Then, she started to spread rumors to them.
“These days, those women giving birth to daughters think they’re much better than us who produced sons.
“My older sister just gave birth to a daughter yesterday, and she would not even let me hold her baby. She’s looking down on me for giving birth to a son!”
Everyone supported her.
“Your older sister is a nasty person. Her bloodline will end with her daughter.”
“That’s right, is your older sister insane? She must have a son!”
“She’s going to suffer when she’s older. When she gets bullied by others, she’d realize the importance of having a son.”
Since then, she refused to see my daughter.
Whenever my daughter was around, she refused to show up. She was afraid that my daughter would spread bad luck to her.
Chapter 3
Thirdly, she tried to solicit money from me.
On Olivia’s third birthday, I went back home to receive the presents my mother had prepared for Olivia.
When Wendy saw me, she immediately burst into tears.
“Dad, you must help Liam. If you don’t help him, my son and I won’t survive.”
I knew she had said that on purpose for me to overhear. I feigned ignorance.
“Liam put his trust in the wrong person, that’s why he lost all his money. I’m not asking for a lot. I just need five hundred thousand dollars.”
Wendy sobbed pitifully.
She was not feeling the pinch because it was not her money.
My father was a lawyer, and my mother was a restaurant owner. Since young, they had sent her to private schools.
They even sent her to study overseas because of her bad grades.
My parents did not fork up a single cent for my marriage because I married rich.
My mother said she had stashed away my wedding funds as emergency savings for me. Instead, she had given the money to Wendy.
Not only that, they even gave Wendy two houses as a wedding gift.
By the third year of her marriage, she went back home crying over money.
She still had a long way to go.
“Ruby, why are you pretending like you’re not hearing this? Aren’t you supposed to help your brother-in-law?
“Do you really want Charlie and me to be homeless? Why are you so cruel?
“Mom, Dad, look! This is what we get for taking her back to us.”
Wendy could not stand that I was ignoring her. Hence, she exploded before she could finish her crying act.
I had the means to help her, but I really did not want to.
In the past, when I married Liam, he had revealed his true colors in less than a week because my parents never forked up money for our wedding.
He had seemed like a good, caring person on the surface. However, he was a rotten human being with bad friends and bad habits like frequenting brothels, casinos and more.
He was basically a black hole. No amount of money could fill that.
In the end, he could no longer remain in this city. He brought me back to his hometown in the countryside. There, I learned that he had some previous marriages.
He demanded that I take care of his first wife, his mother, and all his other family members.
I was too tired to even contemplating to kill myself. Even eating felt like a luxury to me.
“Ruby, I’m talking to you! Your husband is so rich. It’s fine if he lends some money to Liam!”
Wendy saw that I was not answering her, so she moved to strike me.
“Hey, stop fighting! You’re sisters.”
My mother pulled Wendy aside and coaxed her.
Then, she dragged me into the kitchen.
“Ruby, she’s your younger sister. Just throw her a lifejacket, we can’t just let her suffer like that.”
I sneered and recalled the night my first child had a high fever in the past.
It was raining heavily, and I had walked to the hilltop mansion and begged Wendy to give me some money so I could bring my child to a doctor.
With a glass of red wine in her hand, she had instructed her butler to throw my child and I out into a ditch.
By the time I crawled out from that ditch, my child had gone completely cold.
“Mom, Dad, I bet you don’t know that Wendy has already sold off the two houses you gave her to pay off Liam’s debt?
“And Liam didn’t lose his money because his business failed. Instead, he gambled all the money away!”
“Ruby, shut up! What nonsense are you telling our parents!”
Wendy picked up a broom and started to strike me.
After hitting me a few times, my nose started to bleed.
I kept dodging her attacks as I yelled.
“It’s true! You can look into it!
“Why should I lend her money? Her husband will take all of her money anyway!”
“Wendy! You! How dare you…”
My father was extremely furious.
“Wendy! Are you insane? We bought those houses with our life-savings! We gave them all to you! How dare you use it to…”
My mother was so furious that she passed out.
