Chapter 1 of My Mother-in-Law Forced Me Out for His Pregnant Mistress

The penthouse was dead silent.

It was two in the morning. In the bedroom down the hall, my husband, Vincenzo Perkins, was fast asleep. In thirty-six hours, he would board a private jet for a week-long summit in Dubai.

That week was supposed to be my exit.

For four years, I had played the perfect, quiet wife. I smiled at his mother’s vicious barbs. I stayed silent when his mistresses circled like vultures. I let them think the ruin of my family had broken my spine. But every single night, while Vincenzo slept, I gathered pieces of my life back. I set up offshore trusts. I tracked the shares of Spencer & Associates—my father’s company, stolen by Vincenzo before my father's heart gave out under the shame of it all.

I was at his mahogany desk, double-checking account routing numbers, when I saw the misfiled folder.

It was tucked between two real estate tax returns. Inside were two medical insurance claims from an elite private clinic uptown.

I opened the first page. Obstetric records. Paternity acknowledgment forms.

Name of father: *Vincenzo Perkins.*

I turned the page. Another woman. Another obstetric file. Another signature in Vincenzo’s sharp, arrogant scrawl.

My breath caught in my throat.

Four years ago, right after I lost our baby to a stress-induced miscarriage, Vincenzo had wept by my hospital bed. He had handed me signed vasectomy papers. *You’re the only woman I’ll ever want,* he had whispered. *I never want you to go through that pain again.*

It was all a lie. The surgery was fake, or he had reversed it in secret.

He had given two other women the children he swore we would never have.

I didn't cry. My chest felt cold, like ice water was running through my veins. My hands did not shake. I took out my phone, photographed every single page, and placed the folder back in the drawer. Exactly where it belonged.

Then I sat in the dark and waited for my heart to stop pounding.

An hour later, I couldn't breathe in that apartment.

I took my car keys and slipped out into the chilly night air. I didn't change. I was still wearing the cream silk blouse from dinner. I drove aimlessly until I ended up in SoHo, pulling up outside a small, dimly lit basement bar.

The air inside smelled of bourbon and damp brick. I sat on a leather stool at the far end of the counter and ordered a neat whiskey.

I stared at the amber liquid. I didn't drink. I just held the heavy glass.

A white cocktail napkin slid across the dark wood, stopping right beside my hand.

I looked at it. There was a single sentence written in neat, black ink:

*You look like someone who just won something and isn't sure yet.*

I turned my head. Two stools down, a man was looking back at me.

He was broad-shouldered, wearing a dark coat and a crisp white shirt with an open collar. He had striking dark eyes and a faint, jagged scar cutting along his left jawline. He wasn't smiling, but his gaze was steady and remarkably calm.

"Is that your usual line?" I asked. My voice sounded rough.

"No," he said. His voice was unhurried, low and smooth. "It's what I saw."

"You saw wrong," I said. "I didn't win."

"Then you survived something," he replied simply. "That counts as a win where I come from."

He moved over and took the stool beside me. He introduced himself as Adam. Just Adam. He didn't ask for my name, and I didn't offer it.

For the next two hours, we talked. We didn't talk about Wall Street, or high-society galas, or marriages. We talked about art history. We talked about European cities, about stone architecture, about how terrifying and thrilling it was to build something from zero.

He listened to me. He looked at my face when I spoke, not at my dress or my rings. For the first time in four years, I was just a woman, not a trophy or an obstacle.

At 2:00 a.m., the bartender announced the last call.

Adam looked at me. "Do you have somewhere you need to be?"

"No," I lied.

Every choice I had made for four years was calculated for survival. Every smile was a shield. But looking into Adam’s dark, calm eyes, something inside me snapped clean through. I wanted to feel alive. Just once. On my own terms.

"Come with me," I said.

His hotel suite was high above the city lights. What happened between us was reckless, quiet, and intoxicating. It was part grief, part fury, and entirely my own. When his hands touched my skin, there was no shame, no debt, and no ghost of the Perkins name. For the first time in my life, desire felt real.

I woke up just before five in the morning. The bedroom was bathed in a pale, cold gray light.

Adam was asleep beside me, his breathing deep and even.

I sat up quietly. I didn't wake him. I didn't leave a note, or a lipstick mark on the mirror, or a fake name on a notepad. I pulled on my silk blouse, slipped into my heels, and left the room.

I drove through the empty streets back to the penthouse. I stood in the shower for thirty minutes under scalding water, washing away the scent of cedar and whiskey.

At seven sharp, Vincenzo walked into the kitchen in his tailored suit, holding his leather travel bag. He kissed my cheek.

"I'll be back on Sunday, Harlee," he said, smoothing his tie in the hall mirror. "Don't cause any trouble while I'm gone."

"Have a safe flight," I said softly.

I walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. Down below on the curb, his black town car pulled away into the morning traffic.

I watched it turn the corner.

Then I turned back to the quiet apartment, sat at the mahogany desk, and opened my first notebook.
