My Mate's Regret After Removing My Heart
The day before my mating ceremony, my mother caught my soon-to-be mate Derek in a passionate embrace with my step-sister Scarlett. The anger triggered my mother's heart attack need a transplant surgery immediately
Fortunately, I was compatible with my mother for a heart transplant. I decided to give her my heart and use an artificial one instead.
Faced with the enormous cost of the surgery, Derek, my coward of a mate, vanished.
I went to beg my step-sister Scarlett, who had married an elderly but wealthy Alpha Marcus, for help. She claimed she didn't have enough cash, yet the next day she was showing off her new enchanted moonstone necklace.
In my darkest hour, Alexander Stone appeared. He was the most renowned healer and Marcus’s son,the future Alpha. He covered all the costs and offered to perform the surgery himself.
When I woke up, Alexander's face was filled with regret. He told me my mother had suffered a sudden rejection reaction during surgery and passed away.
He pulled my tear-stained face to his chest, declaring his love and begging me to let him care for me for eternity.
Seven years into our mating bond, I accidentally overheard his conversation with his beta:
"So you gave Sarah's heart to Scarlett instead, right in front of her mother? That was brutal, even for you."
"What could I do? Her heart matched Scarlett's perfectly."
"But we had already found a suitable donor heart! Scarlett only needed to wait half a day. Why were you so impatient?"
Alexander sighed, his voice heavy with emotion:
"I couldn't bear to see Scarlett suffer, not even for a second."
1
My fiancé secretly took the heart I had donated to my mother and had it transplanted into his stepmother instead.
Standing just outside the study door, I gripped the handle until my knuckles turned white, my whole body trembling.
The room next door, Alexander exhaled smoke rings, his tone barely concealing obscurity.
"Since I am bound by secular ethics and cannot be with my stepmother, I must protect Scarlett's safety for a lifetime."
Alexander's beta Kane spoke again, his voice troubled:
"But Sarah can't fully adapt to the artificial heart. She suffers from coughing up blood and chest pains constantly. She cannot sense her wolf and can't even carry pups."
"And don't forget - her artificial heart only has one month of life left. It needs to be replaced soon. Are you really going to make her endure the agony of surgery after surgery for the rest of her life? Sarah loves you so much. Give her heart back to her. You already have several backup donors lined up for Scarlett anyway."
Alexander's response was immediate and harsh:
"No! Every extra donor heart means more security for Scarlett's health. I won't take risks with her safety."
Kane grew agitated:
"What about Sarah? I still remember how her mother died, tears of blood on her face. Aren't you afraid Sarah will try to kill you when she learns the truth?"
After a long silence, Alexander let out a bitter laugh:
"If she wants my life, she can have it. I always intended to care for her until the day I die anyway."
"As long as Scarlett is happy, I can die without regrets."
I stood there, my hand shaking on the doorknob, veins standing out on my skin.
Before Alexander could discover me, I recorded the conversation on my phone and fled back to our bedroom, collapsing against the wall.
Because my body couldn't properly adapt to the artificial heart, I was constantly weak, suffering from bloody coughs and stabbing chest pains.
Back then, Alexander had told me heart transplants had to come from living donors. Since my mother had passed away, he said he couldn't put my heart back in my body.
I thought it was okay. At least my heart would be with my mother forever.
No wonder Alexander wouldn't let me see my mother one last time, claiming I was too weak after surgery to leave my bed. He had rushed to handle all the funeral arrangements himself.
Now I understood - his supposed redemption and deep love were just an altar built by a demon. He never even operated on my mother!
Both my mother and I were just sacrifices he offered up to his beloved Scarlett!
To keep me from suspecting anything, he had even pushed my mother into the operating room first, forcing her to watch helplessly as her daughter's heart was placed into another woman's body, dying with tears of blood!
Even without my heart, my chest felt like it was being torn apart. I coughed up a mouthful of blood.
"Sarah?"
Alexander appeared suddenly. Seeing me coughing blood again, he quickly carried me to our bed, tenderly wiping the blood from my lips.
"I'm so sorry, Sarah. I haven't taken good care of you. Don't worry, I've already arranged for the best artificial heart. We'll replace it in a few days."
His eyes reddened with guilt, just like every other time he'd seen me suffering.
I used to think it was because he cared about me and pretending to be strong to comfort him that it's okay.
Looking back now, I was such a fool.
"Alex, I'm in so much pain these years. Can I stop using the artificial heart?"
You already have several backup donor hearts for Scarlett, don't you? So can you give my heart back to me?
Alexander paused for only a second before smiling and stroking my hair:
"Sarah, don't say such foolish things. You don't have a suitable donor heart. Without the artificial heart, do you want me to watch you die? You might as well kill me first."
Don't have one?
But my heart is still beating in Scarlett's chest!
My blood ran cold, but I forced a smile:
"You're right. I was being silly."
I offered to draw Alexander's bath, adding an entire bottle of sleeping potion to the water.
When he returned, he fell asleep quickly.
Perhaps dreaming of his beloved, he mumbled in his sleep:
"Scarlett, I'll protect you, even if it costs my life."
Looking at my husband I had loved deeply for seven years, tears finally slid down my face uncontrollably.
I called my healer friend who had just returned from traveling overseas.
"I need you to help me with a surgery."
"Yes, I'm sure. See you in three days."
What's so scary about death?
Living a life worse than death is what's truly terrifying.
After hanging up, I secretly took Alexander's phone and went to his study room.
As expected, the password was Scarlett's birthday.
I never knew Alexander had a secret Facebook account.
He must have forgotten to switch back, because the profile picture was two artistic letters spelling: "L S" which means Love Scarlett.
Such a simple and direct declaration of love.
Opening his Moments, it was filled with Scarlett's photos. Every caption revealed Alexander's hidden yet obvious love.
"First day meeting Scarlett at the pack house. Finally understood what it means for a wolf's heart to skip a beat."
"Scarlett married another - my own aging Alpha father. I'm going mad with jealousy. Want to lock her away, keep her only for myself."
"Have sex with Sarah three times today. I know her weak body can't handle it, but I had no choice. I missed Scarlett so much, could only call her name in my mind over and over, pretending the woman beneath me was her..."
2
Besides these, there were photos of luxury jewelry and enchanted artifacts he'd given Scarlett.
He'd even bought a heart-shaped private island overseas in Scarlett's name.
While in all these years, the only thing Alexander ever gave me was that artificial heart that brought endless torment and pain.
While I was grieving my mother's death and suffering from bloody coughs and pain, Scarlett was already lounging on the soft sand of her private island, basking in the sun.
My hands shook uncontrollably as I held the phone. Nausea overwhelmed me, and I rushed to the side to retch.
I accidentally bumped the bookshelf, and a book fell out.
Picking it up, I realized it was actually a box disguised as a book.
Inside were several "Voluntary Heart Donation" certificates and stacks of transfer receipts.
Alexander had been sending large monthly payments to these donors' families, maintaining them.
There was only one condition - they couldn't donate their hearts to anyone else. Whenever Scarlett needed one, they must provide theirs immediately.
The last certificate was mine, but the recipient had been changed from my mother to Scarlett.
Back then, Alexander had me sign many papers, claiming they were necessary procedures. I was so focused on getting my mother into surgery quickly, I never read them carefully.
This certificate must have been slipped in then, and my mother's was probably destroyed.
Alexander, you really went to such lengths for Scarlett.
After printing out the mate bond severed agreement, I sat desolately on the couch.
My heart heavy with grief, I didn't sleep all night.
The next day, Alexander thought I had just woken up early and didn't suspect anything.
Perhaps because he'd seen me coughing blood the night before, he thoughtfully prepared a nutritious breakfast himself.
Seeing I wasn't eating, he looked concerned:
"Sarah, why aren't you eating? Are you feeling down?"
"It's nothing. I just miss my mother."
He sighed:
"Sarah, believe me, I miss her too. She was such a kind and gentle soul. It's my fault I couldn't save her. I still remember how she held my hand, making me promise to keep you happy."
If my mother had any strength left in her hands, she probably would have strangled him instead.
Looking at his fake concern, I felt nothing but bitter irony.
Just as I was about to bring up ending our mate bond, Alexander casually mentioned:
"Sarah, you've been so down lately. Scarlett's returning home today - it's her birthday. The main pack house is holding a feast. Why don't we go? It might cheer you up."
"I know you've avoided seeing her since your mother's death, but it's been years. Scarlett didn't mean for any of this to happen... We're all pack family. Scarlett's always been sensitive - I'm worried she'll be hurt if we don't attend..."
So this was his real purpose. All these words just to see his beloved.
I cut him off:
"Whatever you want."
Alexander smiled:
"I knew my Sarah would understand."
As soon as we entered the main pack house, I saw Scarlett dressed like a princess, hanging on my father-in-law's arm, acting coy.
The elderly Alpha indulged her completely, hand-feeding her sliced fruit.
Such doting affection.
Scarlett spotted me immediately and said to my father-in-law in a taunting voice:
"Darling~ you're making me fat with all this feeding! Since your son's mate is here, give her the rest - I don't want these. After all, she doesn't have a mother anymore."
The Alpha noticed me too, looking me up and down with contempt when he saw my simple clothes.
"Who let this sickly runt in? Are you here to spread your poverty and bad luck to us?"
"Our pack holds such high status, yet you dress like a beggar every day. You've completely embarrassed my son. Years of marriage and you can't even produce an heir, let alone show any proper breeding. Did that dead mother of yours teach you nothing about manners?"
Alexander was the Alpha's only son and heir.
He wanted his son to expand the pack's influence by taking a mate from an equally powerful bloodline.
My birth father was a warrior who died protecting the pack. After his death, my mother couldn't raise me alone and had to remarry Scarlett's beta father.
After Scarlett's father died in a car accident, she married Alexander's elderly father to maintain her wealth and status.
When Alexander insisted on mating me, the Alpha reluctantly agreed only because of my hero father‘s high reputation in the pack.
But because my condition made me unsuitable for bearing pups, the Alpha grew increasingly resentful of me.
In the past, Alexander would at least defend me. But now his eyes were fixed on Scarlett, filled with undisguised longing.
Scarlett walked over to Alexander cheerfully, intimately linking her arm with him:
"Son, did you remember to bring Mother a gift?"
Alexander smiled indulgently:
"Of course."
Twenty-eight luxurious designer gowns were wheeled in, each paired with matching sets of exquisite jewelry.
Twenty-eight - Scarlett's birthday.
She jumped with joy:
"These are all limited editions! You're spending too much~ What if someone gets unhappy about it?"
Only then did Alexander remember I was still standing there. My shabby clothes looked even more out of place next to these gowns.
3
Alexander grabbed my hand awkwardly, trying to explain:
"Sarah, don't overthink it. I'm Scarlett's step-son, I just..."
Scarlett suddenly clutched her chest, frowning:
"My chest feels tight. I wonder if my heart condition is acting up..."
Alexander immediately let go of me, pulling her into his arms, face full of worry:
"Why is your chest suddenly tight? Does it hurt? No, I must examine you right away."
Without another word, he scooped Scarlett up in his arms like a princess and carried her upstairs, not even glancing back at me.
The guests all looked at me with mockery in their eyes.
"No wonder Alexander would rather buy his stepmother so many gowns and jewels than get his mate even one. A woman of such low birth doesn't deserve fine things."
"She probably used her mother's death and her father's remaining reputation to trap Alexander into mating her. Shameless thing, stepping over her mother's corpse to marry into power."
The whispers grew louder until the Alpha, feeling he'd lost face, barked at me:
"Disgraceful creature, why are you still standing here? Get upstairs! Haven't you embarrassed our pack enough?"
"My son performing surgery on your worthless mother was her good fortune. She died from her own weakness - it had nothing to do with my son! You should be grateful, yet you dare to blame him? You'll get what's coming to you!"
My fists clenched tight under my sleeves. I could only smile bitterly - yes, meeting Alexander was my karmic punishment.
Thinking of the mate bond severed papers in my bag, I said nothing and turned to go upstairs to find Alexander.
But I stumbled upon him and Scarlett embracing on the second-floor balcony.
Scarlett leaned against the railing, arms around Alexander's neck:
"Alex, quick, check if Scarlett's heart is still fluttering?"
"Scarlett, we can't..."
Alexander struggled to control his voice, but his fitted trousers betrayed his desire.
Scarlett kissed him, her voice seductive:
"Don't you want Scarlett? I know I'm the only one in your heart, and you're in mine too. Even if you had to mate another because of social pressure, your body belongs to me. Let's indulge ourselves just once..."
Alexander finally lost control, grabbing Scarlett's head and kissing her passionately.
The sound of tearing fabric mixed with indecent moans.
Listening to Alexander's sickeningly sweet words of love, tears streamed down my face as I covered my mouth and ran from the house.
I don't know how long I sat outside the front door until a cup of hot tea was dumped on my chest, making me jump.
Scarlett had changed clothes and appeared with a bottle of red wine.
"Sarah, did you enjoy our little performance? Your pitiful escape looked just like a stray dog."
So she had seen me.
"I hear your body can't handle the artificial heart - all that coughing blood and chest pain must be awful. You can't even properly enjoy a man's touch. I'm different though. I can handle even the most intense positions. You may be useless, but your heart works perfectly - I just had such a good time with it."
"You dared to mate my step-son, thinking he actually loved you? Stop dreaming. His heart belongs to me alone. You're nothing but a used heart donor vessel to me."
"Actually, that wasn't the first time your mother caught me with your fiancé. That old hag dared to call me shameless. So I had her tied up and made her watch while I took your fiancé. right in front of her. It triggered her heart attack. When you offered to give her your heart, I pretended my chest hurt, and Alexander couldn't bear to see me suffer even for a second - he gave me your heart instead."
"Oh right, you were unconscious so you probably didn't see your mother's face. Her arms were stretched out so far, eyes bulging, desperate to strangle us. But too bad - she could only watch helplessly until she died of rage. She deserved it! She insulted me, so I took her life!"
I stared in disbelief, never imagining this was the true reason for my mother's heart attack.
My body trembled uncontrollably. How could they kill my mother and act so righteous about it?
I raised my hand, but Scarlett was faster. She poured the red wine over her head and let out a piercing scream.
The next moment, I was violently shoved to the ground.
Alexander held Scarlett in his arms, turning to roar at me:
"Sarah, what are you doing?!"
4
Scarlett sobbed:
"I just saw that your mate hadn't eaten, so I wanted to bring her some beverage. But she accused me of causing her mother's death, knocked over the food, and poured red wine on me. If you had come any later, she would have killed me."
"The hot tea and wine were prepared by me personally. I know they're not fancy, but it's the thought that counts~ I even burned my hand with the hot water..."
Alexander's face darkened instantly:
"Sarah, your mother's heart attack was because she was too weak and insisted on meddling in young wolves’ affairs. Scarlett was kind enough to worry about you, and this is how you repay her? How dare you blame her?!"
I listened in disbelief to these absurd words.
"Alexander, tell me, how did my mother really die? Did you really give her my heart?"
Alexander frowned:
"Of course I did. Didn't I tell you? Your mother had rejection complications after surgery. Heart transplants are always risky - don't you even know that basic fact? Yet you still reject Scarlett's kindness. Apologize to her now!"
I suddenly laughed through my tears.
This was the man I had loved for seven years, who couldn't even tell me one truth.
Like self-punishment, I picked up the fallen wine bottle, ignoring its broken edge, and poured all the remaining wine down my throat, letting the glass cut my lips.
The moment the burning alcohol hit my throat, the pain in my chest became unbearable.
Alexander's eyes widened in panic:
"Sarah, your body can't handle alcohol! Stop!"
I threw the bottle to the ground and smiled at him:
"Alexander, you're right. How could I reject someone's kindness? So I drank your precious darling's gift. Happy now?"
With that, I turned and left without hesitation.
Alexander tried to grab me, but Scarlett quickly held him back:
"Alex, my chest hurts again. I don't know if it was the shock from your wife just now..."
Alexander stared at my retreating back, hesitated for a few seconds, but ultimately didn't follow.
That night, Alexander didn't come home.
I gathered all my belongings and burned them to ashes.
He finally called the next morning:
"Sarah, I was wrong yesterday. I know your mother's death is a wound in your heart. I shouldn't have said those things."
"But Scarlett's heart condition isn't good. I'm worried something will happen to her and I won't be able to face my father. I am her stepson after all - I have to take care of her."
I replied flatly:
"It's fine. I was impulsive yesterday. Take good care of her."
"You drank alcohol yesterday - your chest must be hurting. I'll replace your artificial heart tomorrow. Rest well tonight, I'll come pick you up in the morning."
"Okay."
The next morning, Alexander didn't come.
Perfect - not all goodbyes need to be face to face anyway.
I left the mate bond severed papers on the table and walked out.
At the hospital entrance, Alexander called, his voice apologetic:
"Sorry Sarah, there's an emergency patient needing surgery. I'll have to help you replace the artificial heart tonight instead. I'll send my assistant to pick you up."
"Tomorrow is our seventh wedding anniversary. After the replacement, I'll take you somewhere nice to eat."
A very reasonable excuse - perfect for lying.
Alexander didn't know that Scarlett had already sent me a message.
Because I "ruined" one of her gowns with wine yesterday, Alexander was compensating her by taking her to a jewelry auction. He was bidding on the headline piece - a one-of-a-kind pink diamond necklace.
This was the first time he remembered our wedding anniversary, yet he was spending it with another woman.
"Alright, I want to give you a gift too."
"Really? I look forward to it~"
Hanging up, I took one last look at the blue sky before walking into the hospital without looking back.
Goodbye, Alexander.
Meanwhile, after successfully winning the necklace for Scarlett and treating her to a candlelit dinner, Alexander rushed with her to the hospital.
Only to find that Sarah hadn't arrived.
He checked the time - 00:00.
Where was Sarah?
Just as he was about to call, his assistant ran over with a box.
"Dr. Stone, your wife wasn't home. Someone just delivered this, said it's your gift from her."
Alexander smiled helplessly:
"So Sarah was out preparing my gift? She always loves these little surprises."
He knew Sarah must be hiding around the corner right now, phone camera ready to capture his expression when he opened her gift, just like she had done all these years.
Thinking of her adorable sneaking and peeking, Alexander's heart melted.
He had been too harsh with her that day, then came so late today, yet she wasn't even angry.
Alexander gestured for his assistant to open the box, deciding to act overjoyed no matter what was inside. He couldn't disappoint Sarah.
The next second, the box was opened.
When he saw what was inside, Alexander's face turned deathly pale.
There were no flowers, no suitable gifts like ties or watches for men.
There was only a fist-sized silver metal piece, oddly shaped like a machine joint.
But Alexander's hands trembled as he picked it up, holding it like it was someone's life.
No one knew better than him what this was - he had personally placed it in Sarah's body.
Out of habit, he had even carved a tiny "Stone" on it.
This was the artificial heart that should have been in Sarah's chest!
His movement dislodged a small note from the metal's crevice.
Alexander quickly picked it up - it was Sarah's handwriting.
"Alexander, you're no longer in my heart."
Alexander's mind exploded. He hadn't misread - this was Sarah's artificial heart!
But why was it removed early?
Where was Sarah now?
