Chapter 1 of My Mate Tried to Kill Our Daughter for His Mistress

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I felt it through my skin first—not pain, but absence, like someone had scooped out the space behind my sternum and left the edges raw. I was still in the infirmary bed, bleeding through the recovery gown they'd dressed me in after Heaven's birth six hours earlier. The healer had said to rest. My body screamed agreement. But the mate mark on my neck had gone cold, then empty, and beneath that emptiness I caught a scent I shouldn't have been able to smell from three corridors away: Riley Fox's floral perfume, threaded through the bond like a second pulse.

I pulled myself upright. The room tilted. I pressed one hand to the mattress and the other to my abdomen, where the emergency incision was still leaking through the bandages. Heaven slept in the crib beside me, her tiny chest rising and falling in the rhythm that had kept me awake all night—not from worry, but from the need to count each breath and confirm it arrived.

The bond tugged. Not toward Richard's office or the Alpha quarters, but toward the east wing. Riley's quarters.

I stood. My legs shook. I didn't care.

The corridor was empty except for two Omega healers restocking the supply closet. They saw me and froze, eyes dropping to the blood soaking through my gown. I didn't stop. The bond pulled me forward like a leash I'd spent three years pretending was a blessing.

Riley's door was half-open.

I stepped into the doorway and saw him.

Richard sat at her bedside, his back to me, spooning something into her mouth from a ceramic bowl. The bowl had the pack healer's seal stamped on the rim—blue wax, unmistakable. The recovery broth. My recovery broth. The one Mara had prepared specifically for postpartum healing, labeled with my name and the date.

Riley's eyes met mine over his shoulder. She smiled.

It wasn't triumph. It was something quieter. Confirmation.

"Richard," I said.

My voice shook. Not from fear. From the effort of staying upright while my body tried to fold in half.

He turned. Took in my face, the gown, the blood spreading across the fabric in a dark stain that reached my knees. His expression didn't change. No surprise. No guilt. Just the faint irritation of a man interrupted.

"Go back to bed," he said.

The Alpha tone hit me like a fist to the chest.

It wasn't a suggestion. It was a command, laced with the authority that every wolf in Ironvale was biologically wired to obey. My knees buckled. I hit the stone floor hard, palms slamming down to catch myself. Pain shot up my wrists. The incision tore—I felt it, hot and wet, the stitches splitting.

Behind me, one of the Omega healers gasped. I heard her hand clap over her mouth.

I couldn't move. The compulsion locked every muscle. My wolf snarled somewhere deep in my chest, a sound I felt more than heard, but she couldn't surface. She never could. The bond held her down the same way Richard's tone held me.

"Elena." His voice was flat. "You're bleeding on the floor. Go back to the infirmary."

He didn't release the command. He just turned back to Riley, lifted another spoonful of broth, and fed it to her while I knelt three feet away, shaking.

I don't know how long I stayed there. Long enough for the Omega healers to retreat down the corridor. Long enough for Riley to finish the bowl and set it aside with a soft clink. Long enough for Richard to stand, press a kiss to her forehead, and walk past me without a glance.

The compulsion released the moment he turned the corner.

I crawled.

Back down the corridor, past the supply closet, into the infirmary. I pulled myself onto the bed beside Heaven's crib and lay still in the dark. My wolf stirred again—not snarling this time, but low and steady, like a growl held in the back of the throat.

I reached under the mattress. My fingers found the small leather journal I'd kept for months, locked with a brass clasp I'd bought in town. I opened it to a blank page.

The pen shook in my hand.

*Date: Tuesday, June 14th. Recovery broth—healer's seal, my name on the label. Delivered to Riley Fox. Alpha tone used to compel silence. Two Omega witnesses in corridor.*

Four lines. Clean. Factual.

I closed the journal and pressed my fingertips to the mate mark on my neck. It was still cold. Still empty. But beneath the absence, I felt something else—a pulse that wasn't his. It was mine.

The next morning, Karla arrived.

She didn't knock. Just swept into the nursery with the air of a woman who had never needed permission to enter a room. Two Omega healers trailed behind her, carrying fresh linens they clearly didn't need to deliver personally.

Karla circled Heaven's crib slowly, hands clasped behind her back, inspecting my daughter the way someone might inspect livestock at auction.

"Omega stock," she said finally. Her voice was light. Conversational. "At best."

I stood at the crib's edge, one hand resting on the rail. I didn't speak.

"Three years, Elena." She turned to face me, smiling thinly. "Three years, and this is what you produce. A female. Underweight. No aura to speak of." She sighed, the sound heavy with performative disappointment. "One understands your limitations, of course. But Richard deserves better."

The Omega healers stared at the floor.

I looked at Karla. At her perfectly styled hair, her Luna's posture, the way she held herself like the title still belonged to her even though it had passed to me three years ago.

"Is there anything else?" I asked.

Her smile thinned further. "Only that you might consider your priorities, dear. A Luna's first duty is to her Alpha. Not to—" She glanced at Heaven. "This."

She left. The Omega healers followed, linens still in hand.

I waited until the door closed. Then I pulled the journal from under the mattress again.

*Date: Wednesday, June 15th. Karla Vane. Nursery. Called Heaven 'Omega stock.' Two Omega witnesses present.*

Six lines this time.

My wolf growled again. Louder now. Pressing against the inside of my ribs like something that had learned the shape of its cage and was measuring the walls.

That afternoon, my mother arrived.

Eve came through the door fast, traveling light, her face tight with the kind of worry that doesn't ask questions before it acts. She took one look at me—upright, composed, eyes too quiet—and I watched her know.

"Elena," she said softly.

I shook my head. "I'm fine."

"You're not." She crossed the room, pulled a chair to the bedside, and sat. Her hand found mine. "Talk to me."

I told her. The broth. The Alpha tone. Karla's inspection. I kept my voice steady, factual, the same tone I used in the journal. Eve listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she was quiet for a long moment.

"You need to reach outside these walls," she said finally.

I stiffened. "The Moon Goddess chose him, Mom. The bond is real. I can't just—"

"The bond is a leash." Her voice was sharp. "And you know it."

I looked away.

Eve leaned forward. "Listen to me. If you ever need help that cannot come from inside Ironvale—" She pressed something into my palm. Not an object. Just words, quiet and deliberate. "Beta Sylas. Shadowveil Pack. He owes me a favor."

I closed my fingers around the name.

Eve pulled me into a careful embrace, avoiding the incision, the torn stitches, the places I was still bleeding. My wolf went quiet. Not in defeat. In something else.

Recognition.

*This is what a bond is supposed to feel like.*

When she pulled back, I opened the journal one more time.

*Contact: Beta Sylas, Shadowveil Pack.*

I didn't know yet what it would unlock. But I wrote it down anyway.
