Chapter 3

The Alpha tone clamped down on my central nervous system like frozen iron.

My boots were glued to the burning floorboards. My ribs seized, refusing to expand, locking the air inside my throat. I couldn't turn my head. I couldn't reach for the window. Emmett's command was a heavy, suffocating collar around my spine, demanding absolute stillness from a body it assumed belonged to him.

Flames crawled up the velvet drapes in sheets of bright, chemical blue. The smoke hit the ceiling, rolled across the plaster, and banked down toward my face. It was thick, oily, and reeking of wolfsbane. It tasted like copper and battery acid, scorching my tongue and burning down the lining of my windpipe.

My vision began to fray at the edges, dissolving into gray static.

*Breathe,* I told myself. *Don't panic. Look.*

I couldn't move my limbs, but my mind was entirely my own. I forced my eyes to track the room. The rear windows were masked by a roaring wall of fire. The floorboards near the closet were already sagging. The heavy oak door in front of me was three inches thick, banded with iron, and clicked shut from the outside.

My body began to shake under the pressure of Emmett’s voice. My knees wanted to fold. But inside my pockets, my fingers twitched.

With every ounce of sheer, spiteful willpower I had left, I dragged my right hand up an inch against the seam of my jeans. Two trembling fingers pressed hard into the pulse point of my wrist.

Skin against bone. The small, private anchor that had kept me sane for three years of being treated like a ghost.

*Thump. Thump. Thump.*

Deep in the black, silent cavern of my chest—where my wolf had slept through twenty-four years of life—something twitched.

It wasn't a whimper. It wasn't the dull ache of a rejected mate.

It was a vibration. Low, resonant, and furious.

The blistering heat of the wolfsbane fire was baking my flesh, but instead of sickening me, the fever seemed to boil away the heavy, narcotic sludge that had coated my veins for years. Every cup of tea Emmett had handed me with a soft smile. Every laced meal. The fire was burning the poison out of my blood, peeling away the cage bar by bar.

My lungs seared. The ceiling groaned, raining sparks onto my shoulders. Darkness rushed into my eyes, cold and final—

And then the vibration inside me detonated.

It wasn't a normal shift. It didn't start with a dull ache. It hit like an artillery shell.

My bones cracked and splintered, rebuilding themselves in fractions of a second into massive, dense iron. My tendons tore and re-anchored with sickening speed, surging with twice, three times their human mass. The Alpha tone that had paralyzed me didn't just break—it shattered into dust, completely overwhelmed by a biological force that treated pack hierarchy like tissue paper.

A blinding surge of silver fur ripped through my skin, blazing with the cold, pure sheen of liquid moonlight.

I didn't turn the brass doorknob. I drove my massive shoulder straight through the wall.

The reinforced oak door exploded off its frame with a thunderous *CRACK*. Splintered timber, jagged iron hinges, and stone mortar blew into the hallway like shrapnel.

Emmett had been standing three feet outside. The concussive blast caught him full in the chest, lifting his two-hundred-pound frame off the floor and throwing him violently across the corridor. His back slammed into the far drywall, leaving a deep spiderweb of fractures in the plaster before he tumbled down into a heap on the carpet.

I stepped through the smoking ruin of the doorway.

I had to duck my head to clear the lintel. I stood nearly eight feet tall on all fours, a massive silver Lycan, twice the size of any Alpha wolf this pack had ever seen. My claws dug gouges into the hardwood flooring, and my eyes burned with an ancient, blinding white-gold fire.

The heat of the room trailed behind me in ribbons of blue flame, but the smoke couldn't touch me anymore. The air around my body smelled of white moonflower and glacial frost, cold enough to freeze the breath in the throat of every living thing in the hall.

Dozens of pack members had rushed up the stairs—warriors, elders, maids carrying fire extinguishers.

The moment they looked at me, the corridor went dead silent.

Nobody shouted an alarm. Nobody reached for a weapon.

An involuntary, biological shudder rippled through the crowd. Without a single word spoken, without an Alpha tone to compel them, every single wolf in that hallway dropped to one knee. Their heads bowed. Their eyes fixed on the floorboards, their wolves whimpering in their chests, crushed beneath the undeniable, sovereign weight of pure royal blood.

Against the far wall, Amara was pressed flat against the wallpaper, clutching her silk robe with bleeding fingers. Her mouth hung open, her jaw slack, her eyes bulging in pure, paralyzing terror. She couldn't even scream. Her bladder let go, a dark stain spreading across the hem of her robe.

Emmett groaned, rolling over and clutching his bruised ribs. He dragged himself up onto his elbows, his breath hitching, and lifted his face.

He looked up at me.

His dark brown eyes went wide, the pupils shrinking to tiny pinpricks. The air was thick with my shifted scent—moonflower, cold mountain air, royal iron.

I saw the exact second the truth broke him.

He had spent three years dosing me with wolfsbane, terrified of the aura he couldn't control, convincing himself I was a defect so he wouldn't have to admit he was outmatched. Now, looking up at the silver titan towering over him, his inner wolf curled into a trembling ball and surrendered entirely.

Through the blown-out bay window at the end of the hall, my newly awakened senses reached out half a mile into the dark forest line.

I saw him instantly.

A lone scout clad in matte-black Lycan armor, perched in the canopy of a dead pine. His eyes were wide with shock, his fingers trembling as he tapped his temple, channeling an emergency psychic frequency directly across the territorial border.

My ears caught the raw, frantic vibration of his mind-link:

*"Silver Lycan, pack house ruins, Silverfang territory. Female. Twice Alpha-size. Every wolf on-site has submitted. Your Majesty—her scent."*

The link snapped shut.

Out in the distant pines, the scout dropped off the branch, hit the damp earth, and sank directly to one knee.
