My Mate Marked His Mistress Instead of Me Summary

For five long years, I waited in the dark for my mate, Killian. It was a silent vigil for a bond I could no longer believe in but couldn't bring myself to bury. Then, the mind-link fractured, delivering a devastating blow. Through the broken connection, blurry images of the pack house kitchen emerged under the harsh overhead lights. But it was the scent that broke me—something sweet, foreign, and entirely wrong, proving he had chosen another.

Chapter 1 of My Mate Marked His Mistress Instead of Me

I smelled her before I saw anything.

It came through the mind-link the way bad news always does—sideways, when you're not braced for it. I was lying in the dark of my suite, staring at the ceiling, waiting for Killian the way I had been waiting for five years. Not anxiously. Not hopefully. Just waiting, the way you wait for something you've stopped believing in but haven't yet let yourself bury.

Then the link flickered.

Fragmented images, blurry at the edges the way a dream goes when you try to hold it. Killian in the pack house kitchen. The overhead light, the copper pots, the smell of something I didn't recognize—something sweet and foreign and wrong. He was cooking. Carefully, attentively, the way he had never once cooked for me. His hands moved with a kind of focused tenderness over the stove, and threaded through the whole image was a scent that did not belong to him and did not belong to me.

My wolf didn't wait for me to catch up. She surged forward so hard my vision went white for a second.

I was out of bed before I'd made a conscious decision to move.

I found him in the hallway near the east wing, coming back from the direction of the kitchen. He stopped when he saw me. Something shifted in his expression—not guilt, not exactly. More like the careful rearrangement of a man who has already prepared his answers.

"Isabella." His voice was easy. Too easy.

"I know about Elouise." I said it the same way I'd say the weather. Flat. Final. "The kitchen tonight. The runs through the north territory. The scent on your skin right now."

He didn't flinch. That was the thing about Killian—he never flinched when he should have. "She's a transfer wolf. Packless. I'm helping her settle in. That's what an Alpha does."

"You broke the pack dietary code for her."

"It's not a big deal, Bella—"

"You have never cooked anything for me in five years." I kept my voice very quiet. "Not once."

"You're reading into things." He stepped closer, and I could smell it then—her scent, sweet and floral, clinging to the fabric of his shirt like she'd pressed herself against him. My wolf went absolutely still inside me. Not angry. Certain. "You're exhausted and you're being paranoid. Elouise is struggling. I'm being a decent Alpha."

"She's on your skin, Killian."

He opened his mouth.

I didn't let him finish.

"I, Isabella Clark, reject you, Alpha Killian Murray of the Shadowvale Pack, as my mate."

The words came out steady. I hadn't planned them. I hadn't rehearsed them. But my wolf had known them for longer than I had, and they arrived with a clarity so complete it felt almost like relief.

The bond shattered.

I felt it go—a sound like glass cracking from the inside, a sudden hollow where something heavy had been pressing against my chest for years. Killian made a sound I had never heard from him before. He staggered, one hand shooting out to catch the wall, his Alpha aura guttering and flaring like a candle in wind. His face went grey.

"Isabella—" His voice came out wrong. Stripped of the easy authority. Just a man's voice, suddenly.

I was already opening my mind-link to Cayden.

*I need you. Bring Ronan. Now.*

I didn't wait for Killian to find words. I turned and walked back to my suite, and I started pulling my things out of drawers.

They arrived in under an hour. Cayden came through the door first, took one look at my face, and started packing without asking a single question. That was the thing about my brother—he was the family's golden pup, the one my mother had always poured everything into, but when it mattered, he showed up. He always showed up.

Ronan came in behind him. I had met Ronan Porter a handful of times over the years—Cayden's commanding officer, the Lycan Prince of the Silvercrest Dynasty, a man who occupied a room without seeming to try. He didn't say anything to me. He picked up the box nearest the door, carried it out to the truck, came back for the next one. Quiet. Efficient. Like he had already decided what this night required of him and was simply doing it.

Killian appeared in the hallway once. He looked at Ronan and something complicated moved across his face—anger, confusion, the beginning of something that might have been fear. Ronan looked back at him with an expression so level it was almost worse than contempt.

Cayden stepped between them without a word.

Twenty minutes later, I was in the passenger seat of Ronan's truck. The rain had started—heavy and steady, drumming against the windshield. The pack house lights shrank in the side mirror as we pulled down the territory road, and I watched them go without feeling anything I hadn't already processed.

Ronan drove. He didn't fill the silence with reassurances I hadn't asked for. He didn't tell me it was going to be okay, or that I was brave, or that I'd done the right thing.

He just drove, and the rain came down, and the pack house disappeared behind us.

I didn't look back.
