Chapter 1

The bond died at 7:04 on a Friday evening, five feet from the dais where my mate stood beside another woman.

The great hall of the Ironridge Pack house smelled like fresh blue paint, expensive wine, and synthetic gardenia. Kyle Weaver stood under the arched lights with Hailey Alvarez tucked into his side. She was draped in Silvercrest blue, her hand resting over her flat stomach. Pack members I had cooked for, stitched up, and guarded while they slept looked through me like I was made of glass.

I had come to stand in the back. I had come to let the mate bond fade into nothing and walk away with what little dignity I had left.

Kyle didn't let me.

*"Taylor. Up here. Now."*

His Alpha tone hit my spine like a lead pipe. The command seized my muscles, dragging my boots across the polished hardwood against my will. My teeth ground together until my jaw ached, fighting every inch, but the rank difference forced me up the three steps of the dais.

Hailey smiled, a tight, vicious little curve of her lips.

Kyle looked down at me. His eyes were cold, stripped of every promise he had whispered when he was bleeding out in my arms two years ago.

"I, Kyle Weaver, Alpha of the Ironridge Pack, reject you, Taylor Hollis, as my mate," he said.

The tether snapped inside my chest like a severed steel cable, ripping raw meat from bone. The pale, unmarked skin on my neck turned instantly ice-cold, hollow and dead as a winter grave. Deep in my gut, beneath three years of black-market wolfsbane, my dormant wolf didn't just whimper—she snarled, clawing at the chemical poison in my veins with sudden, savage fury.

I staggered, clutching my sternum as the air left my lungs.

Before I could straighten, Kyle’s mother stepped out from the front row. Evelyn Weaver wore heavy gold rings and silk gloves, holding an iron tong fitted with a heated silver cuff. It glowed a dull, angry orange in the hall's dim lighting.

"No loose ends," Evelyn whispered.

She clamped the burning silver around my left wrist.

My skin sizzled. The white-hot agony tore a scream straight out of my throat, the smell of charred flesh instantly drowning out Hailey’s cheap perfume. Evelyn clamped it tighter for three agonizing seconds before unclamping it, stepping back to admire the blistered, blackened circle branded into my arm. She wiped the tongs with a napkin like she had just cleared a smudge off her dinner table.

Not a single warrior moved. At the very back of the hall, near the shadow of the pillars, Marcus Kane—the Lycan King’s diplomatic observer—tightened his jaw. His silver hair caught the light, but Lycan protocol kept his hands folded behind his back. Without a broken high law, he could only watch.

Hailey stepped to the edge of the stage. Her voice rang out, sweet and dripping with fake sorrow. "Our pack has carried a parasite for three long years. An unawakened, barren Omega who drained our food, our medicine, and our Alpha’s patience. Tonight, Ironridge cuts away the rot."

A smattering of cheers rose from the council elders. Some of the younger guards laughed.

I swallowed the metallic taste of blood in my mouth. I didn't beg. I didn't cry. I pressed my burned wrist against my stomach, turned my back on them, and walked toward the heavy oak exit doors.

Casen Riley stepped into my path.

The pack Gamma stood six-foot-two, his arms crossed over his chest, two armed warriors flanking him. A heavy iron bar rested in his hand. Kyle had positioned them before I even walked through the front gate.

"Nobody said you were cleared to leave," Casen muttered, not meeting my eyes.

I stopped. I didn't back down. I pulled my shoulders back, turned on my heel, and locked eyes with Kyle on the dais. The room went dead silent.

"You speak about drained resources, Kyle?" My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a razor. "Two winters ago, your throat was shredded open by rogue claws on the eastern ridge. The pack treasury was empty. Your mother locked herself in her suite. I pawned my grandmother’s moonstone pendant to buy the black-market healer’s blood that kept your heart beating."

Kyle’s face drained of color.

"I gave you my health. I gave you my bloodline's only relic," I said, lifting my blistered wrist so every wolf in the hall could see the smoking brand. "I don't owe Ironridge a single cent. You owe me your life. And mark my words—the debt runs the other way."

Hailey’s fake smile vanished, replaced by an ugly scowl. Evelyn hissed under her breath.

Kyle’s jaw clenched, his eyes flaring with desperate rage as he stepped down from the dais.

"Casen," Kyle barked, the air vibrating with brute force. "Take her down to the cellar. Lock the iron door."

Casen gripped my shoulder with calloused fingers and shoved me toward the basement stairs.

Chapter 2

Casen shoved me hard between the shoulder blades.

I stumbled through the heavy cellar door, catching myself against the damp limestone wall. The iron latch clicked shut behind him. He didn’t follow me all the way down. Instead, he stopped three steps up the concrete stairs, folding his thick arms over his chest. His heavy boots blocked the only exit.

The cellar was ice-cold. It smelled like cured meat, damp earth, and dried blood from the rogues Kyle occasionally dragged down here to interrogate. A single bare bulb hung from a frayed black wire, swaying slightly and throwing yellow shadows across the scarred wooden table in the center of the room.

Kyle was already standing behind the table. Hailey stood a few paces to his right, leaning against a wooden support beam. She picked at her manicured nails, looking as bored as if she were waiting for an oil change.

Before I could speak, Kyle slammed a thick sheaf of papers onto the wood. The loud thud echoed against the stone walls.

"Sign it," Kyle said. His voice was flat and hard.

I didn't move toward the table. My burned wrist throbbed with every beat of my heart, hot and sticky against my side. "What is that?"

"An accounting," Kyle said. He tapped a finger against the first page. "For three years, you lived under my roof. You ate my food. You used our electricity, our medicine, our territory. We carried you like dead weight. Now that you're leaving, Ironridge wants its investment back."

I stepped closer to the table, looking down at the neat, printed rows.

At the very top, typed in bold black letters, was the total balance: **$200,000.00**.

Underneath, every single month was broken down into falsified nonsense. Training provisions I was never allowed to touch. Security fees. Pack medical care. At the bottom of the first page was Casen Riley’s signature, certifying the pack logs.

I looked up at Kyle. For three years, I had washed his clothes with raw hands. I had cleaned the mud and rogue blood off his boots. I had stayed up until dawn brewing herbal tea to soothe his muscle aches after council runs.

I reached out with my uninjured hand, pressed two fingers against the paper, and slid it back across the table toward him.

"No," I said. My voice was completely steady.

Kyle’s brow furrowed. "What do you mean, no?"

"Every line on that page is a lie," I told him, looking straight into his dark eyes. "I never drew a dime of training provisions. You wouldn't let me near the warrior gym because you were embarrassed of an unawakened mate. And that medical fee from twenty months ago? That was for Dr. Vance’s black-market blood transfusion when your chest was torn open. You didn't pay for it with pack funds. I paid for it by pawning my grandmother’s moonstone pendant. I still have Silas Thorne's pawn receipt tucked in my go-bag."

A soft, musical laugh drifted from the corner.

Hailey pushed off the wooden beam, walking over with slow, swaying hips. Her eyes were bright with vicious amusement as she tucked a strand of glossy blonde hair behind her ear.

"Oh, Taylor," Hailey murmured, her lips curling into a pitying smile. "It's really adorable that you think anyone out there is going to take your word over an Alpha's." She leaned her hip against the edge of the table, glancing down at the papers. "You're a wolfless nobody. In about ten minutes, you won't even be an Ironridge citizen. If Kyle says you stole two hundred grand in pack resources, you stole it. No court in the werewolf territories cares what a stray Omega thinks."

"I'm not signing," I repeated, keeping my eyes fixed on Kyle.

Kyle’s face darkened, shifting from cold arrogance to sudden, ugly fury. He didn't like being told no. He never had.

Before I could pull away, Kyle lunged across the wooden table.

His fingers clamped shut around my left forearm—right over the raw, blistered skin where his mother had burned me with the silver cuff.

A bolt of blinding, white-hot agony shot through my arm, ripping the breath clean out of my lungs. I bit the inside of my lip to keep from screaming as Kyle slammed my arm down flat against the splintered wood, pinning me in place.

His eyes flared a dangerous, muddy amber.

***"Obey."***

His Alpha tone hit me like a solid slab of falling concrete.

The guttural command vibrated straight through my skull, seizing my muscles with terrifying supernatural force. My legs stiffened. My jaw locked so hard my molars clicked. Kyle dragged my hand toward the black ballpoint pen resting beside the papers, forcing my trembling fingers to splay out against the wood, inches from the contract.

My brain was screaming to fight back, to tear my arm free, but the Alpha command held my body captive in an invisible iron vice. Sweat broke out along my temples as I fought the command, my veins burning with the effort to resist.

From the corner, Hailey watched, folding her arms over her chest with a thin, satisfied smirk.

Kyle pressed harder against the silver brand on my wrist, grinding his thumb into the charred skin. The smell of scorched flesh rose between us again, sickening and thick.

"Sign the debt, Taylor," Kyle snarled, leaning down until his hot breath hit my cheek. "Or you're leaving this cellar in a crate."

The pain tore through me, sharp and relentless.

And then, deep down in the dark hollow where my inner wolf had slept under three years of wolfsbane poison, something snapped.

It wasn't a crack of broken bone. It was the shattering of a lock.

A sudden, low vibration rolled through my ribcage. It wasn't the weak, muted pulse I had felt for years. It was a deep, thunderous frequency—a lethal, predatory hum that didn't cower beneath Kyle’s Alpha tone.

Instead, it rose to meet it.

Chapter 3

Kyle didn’t notice the hum in my chest. He was too drunk on his own borrowed authority.

He leaned down farther, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. The smell of his stale iron and burnt ash turned my stomach.

"Of course," he murmured, his voice dropping into a sleazy, conspiratorial whisper, "I’m not completely heartless, Taylor. There’s another way to clear the ledger."

I couldn't move my neck. His Alpha tone had pinned my muscles in place, but my eyes locked onto his side profile, hard and cold.

"Garrison Vance is waiting upstairs in my private study," Kyle said. His fingers gave another cruel twist against my burned wrist, grinding the raw flesh. "He’s funding our expansion into the eastern valley. He likes quiet, obedient girls. You spend tonight in his suite, let him have his fill, and he pays off your two hundred grand directly to the pack treasury. You walk away clean. A win-win."

Hailey giggled from the corner. She stepped up beside him, tapping her French-manicured nails against the edge of the contract.

"Garrison was practically drooling when Kyle showed him your photo," Hailey purred, her eyes dancing with venomous delight. "He said he loves broken-in Omegas. He even promised to buy you a nice bus ticket out of town tomorrow morning. You should be thanking us, Taylor. It’s the best offer a wolfless stray like you will ever get."

My vision went white at the edges.

Three years.

Three years of boiling bone broths to rebuild Kyle’s strength after border raids. Three years of standing silently in the back of pack halls so I wouldn't embarrass him. Three years of enduring his mother's sneers and slaps, swallowing the bitter bile of being treated like dirt. I had pawned my grandmother’s moonstone pendant—the only link to the family I never knew—just so a back-alley healer could stitch his torn throat.

And now, he wanted to sell me to an old border wolf to balance his fake accounting books.

Deep behind my ribs, the white-hot point of fury flared into a wildfire.

For three years, I had swallowed black-market wolfsbane tinctures every single morning. I had choked down the foul, oily drops to numb the strange, terrifying power inside me, believing Kyle when he said my scent was wrong, that a wild aura would get us both killed.

But Kyle had summoned me to the pack house yesterday at dawn. I had been locked in a guest room under guard for over thirty hours.

I had missed two doses.

The chemical dam in my blood was already wearing thin. And now, under the triple shock of a severed mate bond, a sizzling silver brand, and Kyle's pathetic attempt to crush me with his Alpha tone, the dam didn't just leak.

It shattered.

A bolt of pure, searing lightning ignited at the base of my spine. It tore through my veins like liquid mercury, burning away every trace of the wolfsbane poison in a single, violent second.

*Crack.*

The sound was loud and sharp in the quiet cellar.

Kyle frowned, his grip slackening slightly. "What was that?"

*Crack-crack.*

It was the sound of my bones resetting. Lengthening.

The invisible chains of his Alpha tone snapped like dry twigs. The crushing weight on my shoulders simply vanished, brushed away like a speck of dust. I took a deep, shuddering breath, and the cold cellar air filled my lungs with a rush of absolute clarity.

"Taylor?" Hailey’s smug smile flickered. She took a half-step back, her eyes dropping to my hands.

My fingers curled into fists. I pressed my palms flat against the heavy oak table.

*CRUNCH.*

The two-inch-thick solid wood splintered straight down the middle. Long, jagged fractures spider-webbed across the surface, ripping Kyle’s debt contract in two.

"What the hell—" Kyle gasped, jerking his hands back as the table buckled.

I didn't answer him. I couldn't.

My voice was gone, replaced by a deafening, biological roar that shook my entire skeleton. Silver-white fur erupted through the skin of my forearms in blinding, iridescent waves. The pain of the shift didn't hurt—it felt like tearing off a suffocating wool blanket after being buried alive for years. It felt like coming home.

My spine arched. My clothes tore into ribbons.

Kyle scrambled backward, tripping over his own chair and slamming hard into the concrete wall. "Casen! Get down here! *Casen!*"

Hailey screamed, pressing both hands against her mouth as she cowered behind a wooden support pillar.

I rose.

I didn't stop growing at six feet. I didn't stop at eight.

My paws hit the cellar floor with the weight of an earthquake. I was massive—easily twice the size of Kyle’s two-meter russet wolf. Thick, luminous silver-white fur coated my massive frame, rippling with pure moonlight. When my head lifted, my ears brushed the high stone beams of the ceiling, dislodging a rain of dust and mortar.

I looked down at Kyle through eyes of molten, liquid silver.

And then the scent hit.

It blasted outward from my coat, obliterating the cheap gardenia perfume, the damp earth, and the stale iron. It was the scent of ancient moonflower blooming under midnight frost, deep white cedar, dark honey, and wild mountain sage.

It was a scent older than Ironridge. Older than the pack councils. A primordial fragrance carried only in the blood of the high realm—the unmistakable, terrifying signature of the Lycan royal line.

I opened my jaws and let out a low, vibrating growl.

The sound wasn't a wolf's bark. It was the heavy rumble of apex royalty. The sound wave detonated outward, blasting through the cellar walls, ripping upward through the floorboards, and slamming into the foundations of the pack house like a seismic bomb.
