Chapter 4

I did not leave the territory that night.

I went back to the estate for evidence.

The house was dark when I entered through the service door. Every step up the marble staircase pulled at my stitches, but I kept moving until I reached the second-floor landing.

A month earlier, after a rogue breached the east corridor, I had approved a hidden security camera above the archway.

Emma did not know it was there.

I removed the memory card and carried it to the study.

The raw file loaded without sound.

I did not trust myself to watch it only once. I played the clip frame by frame. At 8:14:03, Emma looked toward the hidden camera without realizing what she was seeing. At 8:14:07, my foot entered the frame. At 8:14:09, her fingers wrapped around my ankle before her center of gravity shifted.

That sequence mattered. She had not grabbed me after losing balance. She grabbed first. The fall followed.

I exported a still of each timestamp with the original metadata attached. Then I downloaded the estate camera-maintenance log showing the device had not been accessed or edited since installation. If Cole tried to call the footage fake, a neutral examiner would have the information needed to prove otherwise.

Emma stood at the top of the stairs.

She checked the corridor.

Waited.

I entered the frame.

Her hand closed around my ankle.

She pulled.

No ambiguity.

No accident.

I exported the file to three locations: my phone, a cloud account outside pack servers, and the High Council evidence portal. The portal generated a hash and timestamp confirming the raw upload.

Only then did I sit down.

I opened the High Council portal again and added a written statement describing the fall, the hospital priority decision, and Cole's refusal to accept my report without verification. I attached David's surgical summary but kept the full reproductive file sealed. The Council needed evidence of the crime, not unrestricted access to my grief.

A confirmation number appeared at the top of the screen.

CASE PRESERVED. ORIGINAL FILE HASH VERIFIED.

I added one more request: the Council was not to release the footage publicly until I approved it. I wanted proof, not spectacle. My body had already been turned into pack gossip once. I refused to let the worst fall of my life become entertainment for the elders.

The portal confirmed that restriction too.

For once, evidence existed somewhere Cole could not burn, order away, or reinterpret before anyone else saw it. I printed the confirmation and folded it into the same envelope as David's operative summary. The two documents became my insurance against another morning of being told I had imagined what happened.

I copied the number onto paper and slipped it into my duffel bag. If Cole destroyed my phone, burned the memory card, or ordered the pack server wiped, the evidence would still exist outside his authority.

I cried for the first time.

Not loudly.

Not beautifully.

I bent over the desk and pressed both hands against my mouth while my empty body shook.

Astra was gone.

Our baby was gone.

The video could prove who started the fall. It could not return either of them.

At one in the morning, the front door opened.

Cole came in with Finn.

He found me in the study with the laptop still open.

"Why are you sitting in the dark?"

"Watch."

I turned the screen.

The footage played.

Cole's face changed.

Finn stepped closer.

Emma waited.

Emma grabbed.

Emma pulled.

The file looped.

"Where did this come from?" Cole asked.

"The second-floor security camera."

"Who had access to the file?"

"Me. Security. The server."

His jaw tightened.

"This could be edited."

I stared at him.

"It is the raw card."

"You know enough about pack systems to alter metadata."

Finn looked from him to me.

"Dad, it looks real."

Cole ignored him.

"Give me the card."

"No."

"Lyra."

"The High Council already has the original hash."

That stopped him.

"You sent pack security footage outside the territory?"

"I sent evidence of an attempted murder."

His Alpha aura flared.

"You had no authority."

"I had every authority over evidence of a crime committed against my body."

The study door opened.

Emma stood there in one of my robes.

She looked at the laptop.

Then at Cole.

"What's happening?"

Finn turned on her.

"Did you pull Mom?"

Emma's face collapsed into grief.

"Finn, no. The angle is misleading. I grabbed her because I was falling."

Cole seized the explanation.

"Exactly. A single camera angle cannot show intent."

I reached into the desk drawer and removed a thick cream envelope.

The mate rejection agreement had been prepared three months earlier, after Cole overruled me to move Emma into the guest wing despite my objection.

I had not signed it then.

I signed it now.

My blood from the reopened IV site smeared the bottom edge.

I pressed the document against Cole's chest.

"Sign."

He stared at the heading.

"No."

"The High Council has the video. If you refuse the civil dissolution process, I request a bond hearing."

"You are threatening me."

"I am informing you."

Finn's eyes filled.

"Are you leaving us?"

I looked at him.

"I am leaving your father."

Emma stepped forward. "Lyra, you are grieving. Don't make permanent decisions because of me."

"You are not important enough to be the reason."

Her face changed.

I also sent the raw file to my attorney with instructions that no settlement, private apology, or pack decree could authorize its deletion. If Emma was charged, the evidence stayed preserved. If I disappeared, it stayed preserved. The truth would no longer depend on whether Cole was willing to look at it.

Finn watched me type the final confirmation code. For once, I did not ask him to take my side. I only wanted him to see that adults could disagree without asking a child to become the evidence.

Cole pulled a silver lighter from his pocket.

He lit the corner of the rejection agreement.

Finn gasped.

I watched the flame crawl across the paper until Cole dropped it into the fireplace.

"There," he said. "Now this conversation is over."

I picked up my phone.

The High Council portal showed the scanned agreement already received.

"No," I told him. "Now it is documented."

I saved the Council receipt beside the backup evidence and left the ashes in his fireplace.

Chapter 5

By noon, Cole had turned Emma's survival into a public ceremony.

The pack square was full when I arrived with one black duffel bag.

"To ensure her recovery," Cole announced from the wooden stage, "Emma will remain in the main estate under twenty-four-hour protection."

Applause rolled through the crowd.

The irony almost made me laugh. Emma had never gone to surgery. Her second scan ruled out the suspected bleed before the trauma surgeon finished reviewing the images. Yet Cole had turned a night of unnecessary priority into proof of her bravery.

No one on the stage mentioned the emergency fetal delivery.

No one mentioned Astra.

The pack knew only that their Alpha's fragile childhood friend had survived a frightening fall and that their Luna had been absent from the celebration. The story had been cleaned before breakfast.

I had spent ten years managing this territory's public image. I knew exactly how dangerous a polished lie could become if no one interrupted it.

So I interrupted it.

I walked straight down the center aisle.

The cheering died one row at a time.

People noticed the hospital bracelet still on my wrist. The pale compression wrap beneath my coat. The fact that I was carrying luggage.

Cole saw me and lowered the microphone.

"What are you doing here?"

"Finishing the announcement."

I climbed the stage.

Emma sat behind him with a white bandage on her forehead and perfect makeup beneath it.

Finn stood near her chair.

I took the microphone.

"I, Lyra Mills, resign the office of Luna effective immediately."

Gasps moved through the square.

Cole grabbed my wrist.

"Stop."

I pulled free.

"The High Council received my mate-rejection petition last night. The security footage from the staircase is under independent review. Until that review is complete, I will not reside in the Alpha House or accept orders from Alpha Cole regarding my movement or medical care."

Emma stood.

"Please don't do this because of me. I will move out."

"Sit down."

My voice was quiet enough that she obeyed before she realized she had.

Cole leaned close.

"You are humiliating the pack."

"You signed Emma's priority form in a public hospital while I hemorrhaged ten feet away. We survived humiliation."

Finn stepped forward.

"Why are you being mean again?"

I looked at him.

"Finn, this is between the adults."

"Aunt Emma almost died."

"No. Her scan was clear."

"She said you hate her."

"I do not care enough about her to build my life around hate."

He crossed his arms.

"I wish she was my real mom."

The square went silent.

Cole did not correct him.

Emma's lips parted in perfect surprise, but triumph flashed in her eyes before she hid it.

I felt something inside me settle.

Finn was ten. Young enough to be manipulated. Old enough for words to have consequences.

"Then you should stop worrying that I am stealing her place," I said.

His anger faltered.

"What?"

"You can live with your father. I will not force you to visit me. If you want contact later, it will happen through a counselor until we know how to speak to each other without using Emma as a weapon."

Tears filled his eyes.

"You're leaving me?"

"I am leaving this house. You are not responsible for my marriage. But I will not let you threaten my place as your mother to control me."

Cole seized the microphone.

"Enough. Guards. Take Lyra back to the medical wing."

Six warriors moved toward the stage.

I reached into my duffel and removed a bronze High Council medallion.

I had earned it at nineteen after protecting a Council envoy during the Red Creek rogue attack. It guaranteed temporary immunity from internal Alpha commands while a petition was under review.

I held it up.

The lead guard stopped.

"Council protection," he said.

"Stand down," another whispered.

Cole's face darkened.

"That token does not dissolve our bond."

"No. But this does."

I pressed two fingers over the dead mark beneath my collarbone.

Astra's absence had left the tether thin and unstable.

I looked directly at Cole.

"I reject you as my mate."

Pain ripped through my chest.

Cole staggered.

"Lyra, don't."

"You chose her surgery over mine. You chose her comfort over my blood. You chose disbelief over evidence. I am done letting your choices become my obligations."

I forced the last of the bond outward.

It snapped.

Cole dropped to one knee.

The crowd recoiled.

I nearly fell too, but the bronze medallion hit my palm and reminded me why I had come.

I walked down the stage steps.

No guard stopped me.

At the iron gate, I looked back once.

Finn was crying.

For a second, every maternal instinct I had built over five years screamed at me to turn around. He was ten. He had been frightened, indulged, manipulated by an adult who knew exactly which gifts and permissions would make him feel loyal to her.

But I also knew what would happen if I rushed back now. He would learn that threatening to replace me had no cost as long as his tears came quickly enough afterward. Cole would learn the same lesson on a larger scale.

So I let the counselor become the bridge instead of my guilt.

I faced the gate again. Beyond it waited a neutral road, a human motel David had arranged, and absolutely no guarantee that my body would hold together.

It was still more freedom than the Alpha House offered, and for the first time I chose uncertainty over a familiar cage.

Cole remained on his knees.

Emma stood behind them with one hand over her mouth.

For ten years, I had believed home was the place I could never abandon.

Now I understood home was the place where no one asked me to disappear so someone else could feel safe.

I crossed the boundary line.

The severed bond burned once beneath my skin.

Then it went cold.

I kept walking.

I did not turn back.
