Chapter 1 of My Mate Banished Me Before Discovering I Was Royalty

The bond broke at exactly three-fourteen in the afternoon, in front of three hundred wolves.

I stood at the center of the ceremonial hall in the dress I'd pressed that morning—simple, cream-colored, appropriate for what I thought was a Mate Ceremony reaffirming seven years of devotion. The mark on my neck was warm. Ashton stood ten feet away on the raised platform, his posture formal, his face unreadable. I smiled at him. He didn't smile back.

That's when I saw her.

Arielle Spencer stood at the side of the stage in white. Not cream. White. Wedding white. Her hands were folded demurely, her expression serene, and when she shifted her weight I caught the faint floral scent rolling off her—jasmine and something sharper, something that didn't belong in this hall. Something that had been on Ashton's jacket two nights ago when he came home late.

My wolf—the one I'd never had, the silence I'd carried for twenty-five years—stirred for the first time. Not a voice. A flicker. A warning.

Ashton cleared his throat. The hall went quiet.

"Gemma Reynolds," he said, and his voice carried the Alpha tone I'd heard him use on subordinates but never on me. "Step forward."

I did. My legs moved automatically. The mark on my neck pulsed once, warm and then—

Cold.

Ice-cold.

"I, Ashton Marshall, Alpha of Ironcrest Pack," he said, each word deliberate, rehearsed, "reject you, Gemma Reynolds, as my mate and Luna."

The bond tore.

It didn't break cleanly. It ripped—like a hook dragged backward through meat, like a door slammed on fingers, like something alive being pulled out of my chest through my throat. The mark on my neck went from cold to empty, a scar that hadn't existed two seconds ago but felt decades old. My knees hit the stone floor. The sound echoed.

Three hundred wolves watched in silence.

I couldn't breathe. My hands pressed flat against the floor, fingers splayed, and I felt the cold seep up through the stone into my palms. Ashton's scent—pine and leather, seven years of familiarity—was already fading, replaced by hers. Jasmine. She was standing beside him now. When had she moved?

Someone in the back of the hall coughed. An elder shifted his weight. No one spoke.

The pain should have been unbearable. The severed bond was supposed to drop a wolf into shock, into days of fever and trembling. But underneath the agony, something else was rising.

Heat.

It started low in my spine, a furnace igniting where there had only ever been cold silence. My wolf—no, not a wolf, something larger, something that had been chained under my skin for twenty-five years—woke up.

And it was furious.

My body cracked. Bones shifted. I heard someone gasp, then someone else shout, and then the hall erupted in noise as I transformed in front of all of them. The shift was agony and relief at once—my human form shattering, my Lycan form exploding outward in a rush of silver-white fur and muscle. I was massive. Twice Ashton's size. My claws scraped the stone floor and left grooves.

The aura rolling off me hit the room like a shockwave.

Alphas stumbled backward. Deltas collapsed to their knees. I heard bones creak as wolves who'd been standing went down involuntarily, their own wolves recoiling from mine. Even Ashton—Ashton, who had never flinched in his life—took a step back. His wolf was in his eyes, wide and startled, and for one suspended moment I saw the truth on his face.

He hadn't known.

None of them had known.

For seven years I'd poured my power into this pack—into the borders, into the warriors, into the Shield that kept rogues out and kept Ironcrest strong—and they had called me wolfless. Broken. Lucky.

I wasn't broken.

I was a Lycan.

Ashton recovered first. His Alpha tone cracked across the hall like a whip. "Gemma Reynolds, you are banished from Ironcrest Pack as a rogue. Leave now, or my warriors will remove you by force."

I shifted back to human. The transformation left me naked and shaking on the stone floor, but I stood. My legs held. The scar on my neck was cold and dead, but I was alive.

I looked at Ashton. At Arielle beside him, her white dress pristine, her expression carefully neutral. At the three hundred wolves who had watched me serve and bleed and endure, and who were now watching me be discarded.

"I'm already gone," I said.

I walked toward the side exit. No one moved to stop me. My bare feet left faint prints on the stone—moisture, maybe, or the residue of the transformation. I didn't look back.

At the pack house door, someone blocked my path.

Colten.

My son stood in the doorway, his arms crossed, his face set in the expression I'd seen Ashton wear a thousand times. Stubborn. Certain. Seventeen years old and already choosing.

"Colten," I said quietly. "Move."

"You're a broken Omega who can't even hold a mate," he said. His voice was loud enough for the wolves behind me to hear. Loud enough to carry. He'd rehearsed this too.

I looked at him—at his father's jaw, at my eyes—and felt the last thread of something snap inside me.

"You're right," I said. "I couldn't hold him."

I stepped around him, picked my coat off the hook by the door, and walked out into the afternoon cold. Behind me, I heard Colten's footsteps retreat back toward the hall. Back toward Arielle. Back toward the side that looked like it was winning.

I didn't stop walking.

The wilderness opened in front of me—unclaimed territory, frost-covered and silent. My wolf was awake now, enormous and silver-white and burning behind my ribs. I had no pack. No title. No warmth.

But I had seven years of intelligence Ashton didn't know I'd been cataloguing. I had the coordinates of every rogue encampment he'd used as off-book meeting points. I had the names of his illegal alliance contacts.

And I had a Lycan bloodline that had just announced itself to three hundred witnesses.

I started walking north.
