Chapter 1

I stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror, gently touching the bruise forming on my cheek. Marcus's ring had left its mark again. Five years of marriage, and the fairy tale had turned into a nightmare.

My phone buzzed. A text from my best friend, Aria.

"He's at the Golden Crown Hotel. Room 506. You need to see this, Sienna."

My hands trembled as I read the message. Deep down, I'd always known Marcus was cheating, but I'd been too afraid to confirm it.

Not anymore.

The hotel was only fifteen minutes away. I grabbed my keys, ignoring the pain in my ribs from last night's "lesson" about burning his dinner.

The receptionist barely glanced at me when I mentioned Room 506. "Oh, Mr. Harrison's room? Go right up."

My heart pounded as the elevator climbed. Five... six... The doors opened, and I heard it immediately. The sounds coming from 506 left nothing to imagination.

I used the key card Aria had somehow obtained. The door clicked open.

"Oh god, Marcus! Harder!"

There they were. My husband and his secretary, Vivian, on the same bed where he'd promised to love me forever.

Marcus's head snapped up. "Sienna? What the fuck?"

"Don't stop!" Vivian whined, then froze when she saw me. Her fake surprise would've been comical if it hadn't shattered my world. "Oh... oh my god."

"You pathetic bitch," Marcus snarled, grabbing his robe. "Who told you I was here?"

I backed away. "Does it matter?"

His hand shot out, gripping my throat. "Answer me!"

"Marcus, baby, calm down," Vivian purred, wrapping the sheet around herself. "Let me handle this."

She sauntered over, her perfect blonde hair barely mussed. "Listen, sweetie. Marcus needs a real woman. Someone who can satisfy him. Not some boring little mouse who can't even cook properly."

"Three years," I choked out as Marcus's grip tightened. "You've been sleeping with my husband for three years?"

"Oh honey, longer than that." Her laugh cut like glass. "Since before the wedding. Why do you think he kept me as his secretary?"

Marcus threw me against the wall. "You shouldn't have come here, Sienna. Now I have to teach you another lesson about privacy."

"No more lessons." I tried to sound brave, but my voice shook. "I want a divorce."

The slap echoed through the room. "You'll leave when I say you can leave. And that's never."

Vivian's laughter mixed with the ringing in my ears. "She actually thinks she has a choice! Marcus, baby, she's even dumber than you said."

"Get dressed," Marcus ordered her. "I need to take my wife home and remind her of her place."

I touched my stinging cheek, tasting blood. "I'll tell everyone. About the abuse, the cheating-"

"Who would believe you?" He grabbed my arm, twisting until I cried out. "The clumsy wife who's always falling down stairs? Besides, you have nowhere to go. No family, no real friends. You're mine, Sienna. Forever."

"Please," I whispered, hating how weak I sounded. "Just let me go."

"Never." His breath was hot against my ear. "You're my favorite toy to break."

Vivian finished dressing, blowing Marcus a kiss. "Have fun, baby. Don't be too gentle with her."

As she passed me, she whispered, "He likes it when I scream. But you already know that, don't you?"

The door clicked shut behind her, leaving me alone with the monster I'd married. Marcus's eyes held that familiar gleam - the one that promised pain.

"Home. Now." He dragged me toward the door. "And Sienna? If you ever spy on me again..." His grip tightened until I felt bones grind. "They'll never find your body."

As he pulled me through the hotel lobby, I caught my reflection in a mirror. A broken woman stared back, her eyes dead and cheek swelling.

I had to escape. Tonight. Or I wouldn't survive another one of Marcus's lessons.

Marcus threw me onto our marble floor the moment we got home. The impact sent shockwaves through my already bruised ribs.

"Strip," he commanded, loosening his tie.

"No." The word came out before I could stop it.

His eyebrows shot up. "What did you just say?"

"I said no." My voice shook, but I stood my ground. Something in me had snapped at that hotel. "I'm done being your punching bag."

His laugh was cold. "Done? Oh, sweetheart." He grabbed a fistful of my hair. "You don't get to be done."

The doorbell rang.

Marcus froze. Nobody visited this late.

"Don't make a sound," he hissed, releasing me.

The bell rang again, more insistent.

"Mr. Harrison?" A deep voice called from outside. "This is Dante Romano. We need to discuss your debt."

Marcus's face went white. "No... no, they gave me another week."

"Time's up." The voice held no emotion. "Open the door, or we open it for you."

"Sienna," Marcus grabbed my arm. "Go upstairs. If they ask, you haven't seen me all day."

"Why should I lie for you?"

His fingers dug into my flesh. "Because if you don't, I'll make sure you never speak again."

The front door burst open.

A man stepped in, his presence filling the room. Dark hair, sharp features, and eyes that seemed to see right through me. Two others flanked him, but my gaze stayed locked on him - Dante Romano.

"Mr. Harrison." His voice was silk over steel. "Running from the Romanos was... unwise."

"Please," Marcus released me, backing away. "I can explain-"

"Save it." Dante's eyes flickered to me, then narrowed at my bruised cheek. "Your wife seems unwell."

"She's clumsy," Marcus said quickly. "Always falling-"

"Down stairs?" Dante's smile didn't reach his eyes. "Strange. The bruise looks exactly like a ring mark."

He stepped closer, studying my face. "What's your name, bella?"

"Sienna," I whispered.

"Beautiful name." He turned to Marcus. "You owe my family ten million. Where is it?"

Marcus swallowed hard. "I... I can get it. Just need more time-"

"Time's up." Dante's voice hardened. "But I'm feeling generous. I'll make you a deal."

"Anything!"

"Your debt for your wife."

My heart stopped. Marcus was actually considering it - I could see it in his eyes.

Dante's expression darkened. "I wasn't asking your permission." He turned to me. "The choice is yours, bella. Stay here with this... creature. Or come with me."

I looked between them - the devil I knew and the one I didn't. But something in Dante's eyes told me he'd never raise a hand to me like Marcus had.

"I'll go with you."

"No!" Marcus lunged forward. "She's my wife! My property!"

Dante moved faster than I thought possible. One moment he was beside me, the next he had Marcus pinned against the wall.

"She's not property," he growled. "And you just lost any chance of mercy."

He released Marcus, who crumpled to the floor. "Pack your bags, bella. You're under my protection now."

As I climbed the stairs, I heard Marcus sobbing. But for the first time in five years, I felt something strange.

Hope.

Chapter 2

I clutched my small suitcase as Dante's Rolls-Royce glided through iron gates. The mansion ahead made Marcus's house look like a shack.

"Welcome to Villa Romano," Dante said, his eyes meeting mine in the rearview mirror. "Your new home."

"Until you get bored of me?" The words slipped out before I could stop them.

He turned in his seat, those dark eyes intense. "I'm not Marcus, bella. You're not a toy to be used and discarded."

"Then what am I?"

"Safe." The single word carried more weight than all of Marcus's empty promises.

A woman in a maid's uniform opened my door. "Welcome, Miss Sienna. I'm Maria. Let me show you to your room."

I followed her through marble halls, past priceless artwork and crystal chandeliers. The room she led me to was bigger than my entire first apartment.

"Mr. Romano had this prepared when he learned about you," Maria said, setting down my suitcase.

"Learned about me?"

She pressed her lips together. "Perhaps that's a conversation for him to have."

"Maria," I caught her arm. "Please. I need to understand what I've walked into."

She sighed. "Mr. Romano has been watching Mr. Harrison for months. The debt was just an excuse." Her eyes softened. "He saw how that monster treated you. Had people following you, protecting you when they could."

My knees felt weak. "Why?"

"Because Dante Romano might be feared in our world, but he has one weakness." She smiled. "He can't stand seeing women abused."

A knock interrupted us. Dante stood in the doorway, jacket off and sleeves rolled up.

"Maria, give us a moment?"

She nodded and slipped out, leaving me alone with him.

"Why didn't you help sooner?" I asked. "If you knew what he was doing-"

"I needed legal grounds to intervene." His jaw clenched. "The debt gave me that. But believe me, bella, watching him hurt you..." He ran a hand through his dark hair. "It took everything I had not to kill him months ago."

"And now? What happens to me?"

He stepped closer, and I forced myself not to flinch. "Now you heal. Find yourself again." His fingers ghosted over my bruised cheek. "And if you'll let me, I'll show you what it means to be truly cherished."

"I don't need another man to-"

"I'm not asking to own you, Sienna." The way he said my name made my heart skip. "I'm asking for a chance to prove not all men are monsters."

A crash from downstairs made us both jump.

"Dante!" A female voice screeched. "Where is this woman you've brought into my house?"

His expression darkened. "Stay here. I'll handle my sister."

"Sister?"

"Valentina." He grimaced. "She can be... protective."

As he left, I caught my reflection in the mirror. The woman staring back looked terrified, but something else flickered in her eyes.

A spark that Marcus hadn't quite managed to extinguish.

And somehow, I knew Dante Romano was about to fan it into a flame.

I crept to the top of the grand staircase, unable to resist listening to the argument below.

"Are you insane?" Valentina's voice dripped with venom. "Bringing Harrison's wife here? She could be a spy!"

"Enough." Dante's tone held warning. "You haven't seen what I've seen. What that bastard did to her-"

"Oh, spare me the white knight routine!" Something shattered - probably another vase. "She's damaged goods, brother. And you're risking everything because, what? You feel sorry for her?"

My chest tightened at her words. Damaged goods. Maybe she was right.

"Watch your mouth, Val." Dante's voice dropped dangerously low. "She's under my protection now."

"Protection?" Valentina laughed coldly. "More like your newest obsession. Does she even know why you've been watching her? About the-"

"Not another word."

"Fine. Play your games. But when she betrays you, don't come crying to me."

Heels clicked across marble, followed by a slamming door. I sank to the floor, my head spinning. What wasn't Dante telling me?

"You can come down now, bella." His voice carried up the stairs. "I know you're listening."

Heat crept into my cheeks as I descended. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have-"

"Never apologize for wanting information." He offered a slight smile. "Especially in this house."

"Your sister hates me."

"Valentina hates everyone at first." He reached for my hand, then stopped himself. "She'll come around."

"Will she?" I hugged myself. "Or is she right? Am I just damaged-"

His finger pressed against my lips, silencing me. The touch sent electricity through my body.

"Don't ever say that again." His eyes blazed with intensity. "You're not damaged. You're a survivor."

"Then tell me the truth." I stepped back from his touch. "Why were you really watching me?"

Dante's jaw clenched. "Not tonight, bella. You've been through enough."

"More secrets?" I laughed bitterly. "I've had enough of those to last a lifetime."

"Sienna." The way he said my name made my knees weak. "I promise you'll know everything. But right now, you need rest. Food. Time to process."

As if on cue, Maria appeared with a tray. "Dinner is served, Miss Sienna."

"Join me?" I asked Dante before I could stop myself.

Something flickered in his eyes - surprise? Hope? "If you're sure."

Over pasta that put every Italian restaurant to shame, I studied him. The feared mafia boss who'd saved me from one hell - but for what purpose?

"Ask." He set down his wine glass. "I can hear you thinking."

"What do you want from me?"

"Nothing you're not willing to give." His answer was immediate. "Your trust has to be earned, bella. I understand that."

"And if I never trust you?"

A sad smile crossed his face. "Then I'll still make sure you're safe. Protected. Free to live however you choose."

"Why?"

Before he could answer, Valentina burst in. "Because my dear brother has been in love with you since-"

"Val!" Dante's voice cracked like a whip.

But the damage was done. I stared at him, my heart pounding. "What is she talking about?"

"Well," Valentina smirked. "This just got interesting."

Chapter 3

"Get out, Val." Dante's voice was deadly quiet.

"But I'm just getting to the good part," she purred. "About how you've been obsessed with Sienna since high school. How you watched that bastard Harrison steal her away-"

"Enough!" Dante slammed his hand on the table, making the crystal glasses rattle.

I stood up so fast my chair toppled backward. "High school?"

Memories flooded back - Lincoln High, senior year. A quiet boy in my advanced literature class who always sat in the back. Dark hair, intense eyes...

"Oh my god." My hand flew to my mouth. "You were Daniel Romano."

"Yes." His eyes met mine, filled with pain and something else. "I changed my name when I took over the family business."

"You... you disappeared after graduation. Everyone said your family moved to Italy."

"We did." He ran a hand through his hair. "Father's orders. To learn the business."

Valentina snorted. "Learn the business? More like pine away over your high school crush while-"

"I said get out!" This time, Dante's voice made even his sister flinch.

She flipped her hair and stalked toward the door, but paused. "Just remember, brother dear - she chose Harrison over you once. What makes you think she won't break your heart again?"

The door slammed behind her, leaving us in heavy silence.

"Is it true?" My voice shook. "You've been watching me since..."

"Since I came back three years ago and saw what he was doing to you." His fists clenched. "I wanted to kill him the first time I saw him raise his hand to you."

"Why didn't you tell me? When we were in school, why didn't you ever..."

"Because you were sunshine, Sienna. Pure, bright, untouched by darkness." He laughed bitterly. "And I was already being groomed for this life. I couldn't drag you into it."

"So you just watched? For years?"

"I tried to stay away. But then I heard about the marriage, the abuse..." His eyes darkened. "I had my men following you, making sure he never went too far. Looking for a legal way to get you out."

My legs felt weak. I sank back into my chair. "The debt?"

"Real. But not why I chose now to collect." He reached across the table but stopped short of touching me. "Today at the hotel, when he put his hands on you... I couldn't wait any longer."

"All this time..." Tears stung my eyes. "You were my guardian angel?"

"Angel?" He scoffed. "I'm the devil, bella. Ask anyone."

"Then why do I feel safer with you than I ever did in heaven?"

His breath caught. For a moment, the feared mafia boss vanished, replaced by the boy who used to steal glances at me in literature class.

"Sienna, I-"

A phone rang, shattering the moment. Dante checked the screen and cursed.

"Business?" I asked.

"Unfortunately." He stood, straightening his jacket. "We'll finish this conversation tomorrow?"

I nodded, watching him head for the door. But something made me call out.

"Daniel- I mean, Dante?"

He turned.

"Thank you. For watching over me all this time."

A soft smile crossed his face - one I remembered from all those years ago.

"Always, bella. Always."

Sleep eluded me in my new bedroom. Every time I closed my eyes, memories flooded back - not of Marcus's abuse, but of Daniel Romano in high school. How had I never noticed the way he looked at me? The quiet boy who always held doors open, who left poetry books on my desk when he thought I wasn't looking.

A soft knock interrupted my thoughts.

"Come in?"

Maria entered with a steaming mug. "Chamomile tea, Miss Sienna. Mr. Romano thought you might have trouble sleeping."

"He seems to know a lot about me." I accepted the mug, letting its warmth seep into my hands.

Maria perched on the edge of my bed. "May I speak freely?"

I nodded.

"I've worked for the Romano family since Dante and Valentina were children. I've never seen him like this." She smoothed her apron. "The way he looks at you... it's like a man who's found water in the desert."

"But why me? After all these years?"

"Some loves don't die, they just sleep." She stood, heading for the door. "And sometimes, they wake up stronger than ever."

After she left, I wandered to the window. The moonlight cast silver shadows across the mansion's grounds. Somewhere below, a figure paced the garden - Dante, his phone to his ear.

Even from here, I could see the tension in his shoulders. What burdens did he carry? What secrets still lay between us?

A movement in the shadows caught my eye. Valentina, watching her brother with an unreadable expression.

The door creaked open behind me.

"Can't sleep either?" Valentina's voice made me jump. I hadn't even heard her come upstairs.

"I didn't hear you-"

"Obviously." She glided into my room, all lethal grace in designer pajamas. "We need to talk."

"About how much you hate me?"

"Hate you?" She laughed, but it held no warmth. "Oh no, Sienna. I don't hate you. I pity you."

"I don't need your pity."

"No?" She settled into an armchair, studying me. "Then let me tell you what you don't know about my brother. About the real reason he's been obsessed with you all these years."

"Valentina-"

"Did you know he was there? The day Marcus proposed to you?"

My breath caught. "What?"

"Oh yes. He'd finally worked up the courage to approach you. Had this whole speech planned." Her lips curved into a cruel smile. "But then Marcus swooped in with his fancy car and expensive ring. And you? You practically threw yourself at him."

"That's not-"

"You broke my brother that day. He watched you choose another man, and something in him... changed." She examined her manicured nails. "The sweet boy you knew in high school? He died watching you say yes to Marcus Harrison."

"I didn't know." My voice cracked. "I never saw him there."

"Of course not. You were too busy playing princess with your new prince." She stood, moving to the window. "But Dante? He became ruthless after that. Threw himself into the family business. Every deal, every territory we took - it was all to become powerful enough to protect you if he ever got the chance again."

My legs felt weak. I sank onto the bed. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you need to understand what you're dealing with." She turned, her eyes hard. "My brother isn't your high school sweetheart anymore. He's a man who's spent years building an empire, partly because of you. His love isn't sweet poetry books anymore - it's dangerous. Obsessive."

"You're trying to scare me away."

"I'm trying to prepare you." She moved toward the door. "Because sooner or later, you'll have to choose again. And this time? If you break his heart, I'll break you."

The door closed behind her with a soft click, leaving me alone with her words echoing in my mind.

Below, Dante had stopped pacing. He stood in the moonlight, looking up at my window. Our eyes met across the distance.

Even from here, I could see what Valentina meant. This wasn't the shy boy from high school. This was a man who'd built an empire, who commanded fear and respect.

A man who'd never stopped loving me.

As I watched, he lifted his hand in a small wave. Without thinking, I pressed my palm against the glass in response.

His smile - soft, genuine, achingly familiar - made my heart skip. For a moment, I saw both versions of him: the quiet boy who'd loved me from afar, and the powerful man who'd never stopped.

The question was: which one was more dangerous to my heart?

A text lit up my phone: "Sleep well, bella. We have much to discuss tomorrow. - D"

I typed back before I could stop myself: "I remember the poetry books."

His response came instantly: "I remember every word I wanted to say to you."

"Why didn't you?"

Three dots appeared, disappeared, appeared again. Finally: "Because you deserved better than a future mafia boss."

"And now?"

"Now I know better than to let you go twice."

I stared at his words until my vision blurred. Valentina was right - his love wasn't sweet poetry books anymore.

It was a promise. A warning. A second chance.

And I wasn't sure if I should run from it or embrace it.
