Chapter 2

I thought that not answering the phone would give me a temporary escape from the problem, but Rita's call came through within a few minutes.

I answered.

"Harrison Moore, what's the point of doing this? I told you that I don't want a baby now. Do you have to complain to my mother?

"And, did you arrange for someone to intercept my important projects halfway to force me to resign? Save your energy, even if I resign, I won't stay at home to give birth to a child for you."

I took a deep breath, unable to believe that I was seen as such a vile and unprincipled person in Rita's eyes.

Yes, I did talk to her mother about this.

But the truth was that her mother took the initiative to ask why we still hadn't had a child.

I bitterly smiled and made up an excuse that I was too busy with my career.

I didn't say a single bad thing about Rita throughout the conversation.

As for intercepting her projects, it was just a rumor.

But since Rita said it, I had someone investigate it just to be sure.

"Rita, let's talk," I said.

My heart was dead silent. Perhaps there was really no need for this relationship to exist.

Up until now, it had always been just me trying to keep it.

I was so tired.

At 11 o'clock in the evening, Rita finally returned home.

She was still reeking of alcohol. She must have just finished a banquet.

This time, I didn't prepare milk for her. Instead, I took out the contract I had prepared in the afternoon.

"Take a look. Sign it if there are no problems."

Before Rita could take a look, she ran to the bathroom to vomit.

Watching her throw up violently, I still couldn't bring myself to go to the kitchen and prepare a glass of milk.

Well, this would be the last time.

As usual, she frowned before drinking the milk in one gulp.

"You're not feeling well. Let's talk about it tomorrow."

Divorce was not a small matter.

I hoped we could part ways amicably when we were both sober.

Rita ignored my suggestion and walked straight to the table to pick up the contract and flip through it.

She frowned and looked impatient.

"Nick, what are you up to now? You're divorcing me just because I don't want to have a baby. You're so unreasonable."

I placed the investigation materials I found today in front of her.

"I didn't participate in the project from beginning to end, so I don't know. I contacted some acquaintances of the other party's company. They said that they thought you were unprofessional because there were several mistakes in your bid document, so they chose another company, exactly the one I work for."

Rita looked a bit lost, not sure what she was thinking.

Maybe she was thinking about Aaron, after all, the bid documents were all prepared by him.

"As for your mother, I just said that I don't want a child for the time being. I didn't mention you. Maybe she just wanted to have a grandson, so she urged you."

She looked a little embarrassed and said lightly.

"Well, even if I wronged you this time, you don't have to ask for a divorce."

I shook my head. "It's not because of that."

Rita frowned and asked in return.

"Then what is it? Harrison, can't you be more mature? I've already said it's a crucial time for me to advance in my career. It's not appropriate for me to have a child."

I directly handed her the phone and played the video.

I thought she would panic and hurry to explain to me, but she didn't.

Rita watched the video calmly without changing her expression.

She was still puzzled. "Is it just because Aaron shot a video?"

I moved closer to Rita and leaned in to kiss her.

She tilted her head and avoided it.

I bitterly smiled. A person's unconscious reactions couldn't deceive others.

We have been married for five years, but Rita is still not used to my touch, let alone being intimate with me.

But when facing Aaron, she was so natural in leaning towards him.

She didn't mind the dirt or the discomfort.

The atmosphere was very silent.

"Harrison, can you stop having filthy thoughts? Aaron was bitten by a snake at that time and his life was at stake. As his direct leader and former senior, I couldn't just stand by and do nothing."

"Not everyone is as perverted as you," she added.

Faced with Rita's accusation, I suddenly felt bored.

I didn't want to argue with her about who was right or wrong.

"Rita, have you ever noticed the tone you are calling him? You are always very gentle when you call him, but when you call me, your tone is always accusatory.

She was stunned and explained, "I..."

I interrupted her and pointed at the signature.

"I have already signed, just check it over and sign it. I won't take advantage of you in terms of property. I won't touch anything that's rightfully yours, and this house will be left for you. However, I'll contribute more towards the deposit."

My firm and serious attitude made Rita a little annoyed.

After all, from the very beginning of our relationship, I had always followed her and devoted myself to her.

Perhaps she had never expected that I would be the first one to break up with her.

Rita glanced at me angrily, still as arrogant as ever.

"Harrison, you're the one who initiated the divorce. Don't regret it in the future and beg me to get back together with you."

"Don't worry, I won't come back to bother you again," I replied.

For the past few years, Rita had always been in control of our relationship.

She had proposed breaking up, but after my persistent apologies and pursuit, she agreed to continue being with me.

But this time, I really had to let go.

We had been in love for three years and married for five years. I had thought that I could warm Rita's heart, but in the end, it was all in vain.

How could a heartless person be moved?

I used to think about getting married to Rita, starting a family, and raising our own children, all of us happily together.

However, reality gave me a few tight slaps, bloodied and painful.

Rita signed the divorce agreement and threw it at me.

"Harrison, you can leave now," she said.

I went into the room and quickly packed my things, then pulled my suitcase and looked one last time at the house we had shared together.

Goodbye, Rita.

Before leaving, I reminded her.

"See you at 10 am tomorrow at the Marriage Registration Office."

Her hesitant expression became cold again at this moment.

Early the next morning, I tidied myself up, dressed in a suit, tie, and shirt, and made a decent effort to say goodbye to the relationship.

When I used to date Rita, I would always arrive half an hour early to show her how much I valued her.

This time was no exception.

I arrived at the Marriage Registration Office at 9:30 a.m.

But Rita was nowhere to be seen.

I called her, but no one answered. Until the staff of the Marriage Registration Office got off work, Rita still did not show up.

I didn't know what she meant.

Was she reluctant to let go of the relationship?

I didn't realize that because of this guess, there was a glimmer of hope in the depths of my heart.
