Chapter 5
A hard slap landed across my face.
I stumbled back two steps, my cheek burning.
“Anna.” Harry’s bloodshot eyes locked on me. “Apologize to Claire right now, and I’ll forget about the watch.”
Claire hid behind him and flashed me a triumphant smile.
I closed my eyes and cursed myself for still trying to explain anything to him.
Why would he care if I was right or wrong?
I ignored the sting on my cheek and inhaled deeply.
“Harry, my lawyer said the divorce papers are finalized. I’ve returned your watch, too.
"From this day on, we’re done for good.”
Without another word, I walked out into the rain.
Behind me, a chair crashed to the floor. It sounded like someone had lost their temper completely.
I didn’t look back and just kept walking.
The next day, I went to the HR Department to request my official resignation papers.
Ms. Lewitt tried desperately to persuade me to stay. She even made one final call to Harry for confirmation.
Harry was busy taking Claire to her prenatal checkup, and he didn’t even let her finish before snapping, “The Sales Department is already under Claire’s control. Just do whatever she says. She’s in charge now. Do as she says!
"The company seal’s in the safe. Handle it yourself and stop bothering me!”
The line then went dead. Ms. Lewitt stomped her feet in frustration but eventually had no choice but to stamp every single resignation letter.
On the other side of the door, the group of college students Claire had hired made sure I heard every word of their gossip.
“What’s the point of being good at your job if you can’t even keep your husband? She can’t have kids either. What a loser!”
“Right? Claire’s way better. One try and she’s pregnant. Some people have been married for years and still can’t get pregnant!”
Everyone in my team clenched their fists angrily. They were ready to fight back, but I raised a hand to stop them.
“Don’t bother. We’re done here. Let’s go.”
At exactly three in the afternoon, I led 32 members of my team onto a flight bound for Demarcia.
Meanwhile, Harry was at the hospital with Claire for her prenatal appointment when his phone started buzzing nonstop.
Annoyed, he finally stepped aside to take the call.
“What is it? You’ve been calling all day!”
“Mr. Forger, there’s a problem.” His secretary’s panicked voice came through. “Several clients are saying our project proposals are completely unusable!”
Harry frowned. “What do you mean by unusable? What’s Anna doing? She’s always been the one reviewing those proposals herself.”
“Ms. Wesley has already resigned, Sir.”
Harry froze. “Who approved that? What about the rest of the Sales Department? What happened to Group A and Group B? There are 32 of them, and they're all top performers. Couldn’t they keep the projects under control?”
The secretary’s voice trembled in fear.
“Mr. Forger, Ms. Yates transferred the entire Sales Department to the Facilities Department. Weren't you aware of that?
"And yesterday, they all resigned together. Ms. Yates told Ms. Wesley to buy her some seafood, and once Ms. Wesley did it, Ms. Yates approved everyone’s resignations. All the paperwork’s been stamped. This morning, they all flew overseas with Ms. Wesley.”
