Chapter 2
Indignation
Harvey denied everything when he woke up, saying, "Since you want to leave, just pretend this never happened." He looked at me coldly, treating me as though I was the scum of the Earth.
I thought about it dazedly. Eventually, I concluded that his gentleness last night was likely an illusion.
He was just drunk. There was no way he could have fancied me.
After Harvey's parents knew we had slept together, they kept their word and had us tie the knot.
Since he couldn't defy his family's authority, he had no choice but to force himself to accept the marriage. Even so, he was still indignant about it all.
As a result, I caught sight of him flirting with other women on our wedding eve.
His father forced him to apologize to me, but Harvey remained silent the whole time.
In fact, he was not swayed when his father lashed him.
On the contrary, I was so shocked that I rushed to Harvey to protect him. Alas, he pushed me away ruthlessly. "Stop being a hypocrite!" He glared at me with disgust. "Do you think I will thank you?"
I understood that he would never love me based on the look in his eyes.
Harvey played around with different women just to humiliate me.
Nevertheless, I could only resent fate for playing tricks on me instead of crying for his lack of affection.
Rumor had it that I only managed to marry into the Fergusons because I had guilt-tripped Harvey.
Unbeknownst to them, I would still not be interested in dating him even if he were the last man standing. However, that could only happen if my father was alive.
Sadly, he would never return.
I, on the other hand, was destined to spend the rest of my life in captivity. After all, I had no place to go apart from living under the Fergusons' protection.
My nominal marriage to Harvey was as lifeless as a pool of stagnant water. It wasn't until the day Natalie appeared in Harvey's life that it suddenly swashed with vim and vigor.
Unlike the other women, Harvey was genuinely attracted to her.
For example, Harvey dropped all work to look after her even though she merely caught a cold from getting wet in the rain.
Whereas my request for help was nothing but a nasty tactic to him.
Harvey had no intention of calling back up until the next day.
The rain outside had stopped. As for my corpse… Well, it was left alone in the abandoned steel factory, unsure how long it would take for someone to discover it.
Perhaps no one would ever realize I was gone if Harvey didn't look for me.
Only my good friend, Irene Abbott, noticed something was off. She called Harvey many times. Eventually, he got fed up and answered the call.
"Harvey, have you seen Danica? I called her but couldn't get through. Did something happen to her?"
"It's none of my business," Harvey responded coldly.
"You are her husband! What if she is in danger?" Irene's voice sounded sullen.
Harvey's tone remained indifferent as he added, "Tell her to stop playing this so-called kidnapping game. I don't buy her act. She still needs to come over and finalize the divorce in two days, even if she's dead."
Before Irene could say something in response, he hung up the phone.
Natalie tugged on his sleeve and asked, "Harvey, is Danica jealous again? Why don't you go home? I can take care of myself."
Harvey ignored her request and continued to hug Natalie. "What right does she have to be jealous? Nat, she only bullies you so much because you're sensible. Once I divorce her, you will never have to let yourself suffer again."
Natalie nodded. "Okay. Whatever you say, Harvey."
Meanwhile, my soul was floating on the side. All I felt was slightly ironic as I watched the sight before me.
Who would bear the thought of letting the woman Harvey cared for so deeply suffer? Oh, right, me. In his eyes, everyone in this world was nice except for Danica.
Harvey would never forgive me because I failed to promptly save Natalie from the gangsters when she was in danger.
Chapter 3
Miscarriage
Harvey was having a meeting in the company the day those gangsters harassed Natalie in the bar. Since he left his phone at home, I ended up being the one who heard Natalie's voice message.
'Save me, Harvey! I don't know where they're taking me… I'm so scared.'
Since I knew how important Natalie was to him, I promptly called the police. Then, I hurried downstairs. In my mind, all I could think of was to seek Harvey to save her.
It was just that I was overly rushed when I descended the stairs. As a result, I fell from the stairs on the second floor to the first floor and knocked my head hard to the point that I felt my head was spinning slightly.
I gritted my teeth and stood up, only to discover a shocking pool of blood on the floor.
My face immediately turned pale. I was so frightened that I couldn't move. It wasn't until Irene accompanied me to the hospital that I found out I was pregnant.
Unfortunately, I lost the baby.
I was in utter turmoil. I didn't even know when I was pregnant. I simply felt very unwell recently and thought I was sick.
Hence, I tried hard to recall when it happened. Finally, my memory paused on the night of Irene's birthday.
That night, I had too much to drink due to my cheery mood. I was so drunk that I couldn't tell whether the person in front of me was Irene or Harvey. All I remembered was that someone carried me into the car, and I drowsily held their neck and talked a lot.
"Irene, let's go abroad together once you make plenty of money. This way, I don't have to see Harvey again…"
Harvey's voice rang in my ear. "You want to leave me?"
I merely assumed that it was because I was hallucinating after drinking too much. So, I paid no attention to his words and didn't realize that the person holding me was actually Harvey.
The next day, I lay naked on the bed.
My head was aching slightly as I looked at the mess on the floor. Still, I dismissed everything that happened as a dream, as Harvey was nowhere to be seen.
It was only now that fragments of memories flooded into my mind that I realized in hindsight what he must have done to me that night. However, it was too late.
Due to my carelessness, our baby died unexpectedly.
When Harvey came to visit me at the hospital later, he was furious. "Danica, where's my phone? You took my phone away just to prevent me from finding Nat, right? I won't let you off the hook if she suffers any harm."
His gaze was icy, and his tone was fierce.
Meanwhile, I lay on the hospital bed. All the words I wanted to say were stuck in my throat.
Irene cried foul on my behalf, "Harvey, do you know that she has had a miscarriage now? Yet, you're behaving hysterically here because of that mistress of yours!"
Harvey only glanced at me lightly with his frosty gaze. "Miscarriage? Can't you even come up with a decent excuse? How can she have a miscarriage when she's not even pregnant?"
Irene roared in fury, "Go ask the doctor if you don't believe me!"
Harvey dismissed the raging Irene. Instead, he simply looked at me and said, "This show that you and Irene had put on truly is fascinating. Do you think you can make me take pity on you by going to the hospital and presenting a fake medical record to me?
"The police are searching for Nat now. You better pray she's okay. Otherwise, I will never forgive you."
Suddenly, I laughed. At the same time, an inexpressible sense of sorrow surged in my heart.
I became so panicked that I fell down the stairs and miscarried when I learned that Natalie had been kidnapped.
Yet, my husband deemed me as a jealous spouse who would only hide his phone away.
Nonetheless, it turned out that there were times when he lost his composure and went on a rampage because of his lover. Unfortunately, that lover wasn't me.
My sudden laughter slightly caught him off guard.
Then, I slowly took out the phone and handed it to him.
"Here. The thing you wanted."
He swiftly snatched the phone away and left without even looking back.
Irene finally sat by the bedside and wiped my tears after cursing at him for a good long while. "Danica, don't cry. Don't give birth to his child. He's not worth it at all!"
Chapter 4
The Kidnapping
Natalie was rescued without any danger. Harvey would accompany her every day for fear that she would be harmed again.
I was just discharged from the hospital when the divorce settlement agreement was mailed to me.
Since the weather was bright and sunny that day, I felt a surge of renewal of sorts. It was as though the weather itself was welcoming a new life ahead of me. "Before we get divorced, can you accompany me to visit my dad once?" I asked Harvey.
The Fergusons rarely allowed me to visit my father's grave and pay respect for fear that the drug dealers would take their revenge on me.
Now that Harvey and I were about to divorce, I had no other wishes except for him to visit my father's grave with me and pay our respects.
"Harvey, I don't hate you. I don't care who you like. It's fine if we divorce. Still, I would never have met you if my dad was alive."
I didn't want the Fergusons' reputation, status, and wealth. After all, no sane person would fancy someone who didn't love them.
Harvey simply remained silent upon hearing my request.
Honestly, I didn't want to guilt-trip him. It was just that fate had decided to bind our lives together.
There was nothing we could do. Regardless, I finally had it all figured out today. We might as well let each other go instead of tormenting each other.
"I'll give you enough money."
"It's alright." I smile in relief. "I don't want anything from you."
I stayed with the Fergusons until the day I left my father's grave. After that, I never returned to the Ferguson Residence. I moved to Irene's place. As for Harvey, he didn't care about any of it, which didn't surprise me.
However, our divorce kept getting held off due to the objections from Harvey's parents.
Later, Natalie took the initiative and came to me. "Miss Reed, why do you want to pester a man who doesn't love you? Dragging it on will only make him more and more disgusted with you."
I wanted to ignore her at first. However, she made a false countercharge against me.
"Do you find it fun to keep someone else's boyfriend all to yourself like this?"
One after another, people in the cafe looked up when they heard what Natalie said. When she noticed this, she raised her voice and continued, "He doesn't love you. Can you please let him go?"
Thanks to her lies, all the passers-by cast me a scrutinizing look.
Although I was furious at her lies and found them laughable, I refrained from arguing with her under the public's watchful eyes.
It was just that Irene was in a towering rage after learning about it. Thus, she stormed to Harvey's company to find Natalie.
Eventually, Harvey couldn't bear it anymore and approached me. "Danica, what's the meaning of this? Nearly causing her to lose her virginity last time wasn't enough for you, huh? That's why you have Irene come to the company and shame her this time.
"Why are you so evil? Do you think I won't divorce you because you have the support from my family, huh?"
Since I knew he hated me down to his very core, I didn't see any reason why I shouldn't help him fulfill his wish.
"Three days later then. This time, we will get that divorce as you wish." The biggest obstacle to our divorce was from the Fergusons.
Thus, Harvey could successfully divorce me and marry Natalie as long as I persuaded Harvey's parents.
Unfortunately, the drug dealers kidnapped me before I could talk to his parents. "We have finally found you after all these years," they said maliciously.
Since Irene had turned off her phone, I had no choice but to call Harvey.
If he had believed in me, I wouldn't have died so tragically. He might even be able to get the divorce certificate that he so wished for three days later.
