Chapter 1 of My Husband Used College Girls to Steal My Company

Five days before Christmas, my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was a text from my best friend, Alina.

*Look at this,* she wrote. Attached was a red-light camera ticket.

I opened the image. It had been taken two nights ago at 11:42 PM in Lower Manhattan. The car was our black Mercedes. The license plate was Kolson’s.

Lower Manhattan made no sense. Kolson told me he had a late dinner with investors in Midtown that night. He had even texted me around midnight to say traffic on the bridge was a nightmare.

I zoomed in on the windshield. The driver was definitely Kolson. His hands rested easily on the wheel. Beside him in the passenger seat sat a woman. She looked young, with long dark hair, turning her head toward him with a wide smile.

My chest went cold. For ten years, I trusted Kolson with my life. When my father died three years ago, I let Kolson take over as CEO of Matthews & Associates. I had stepped back to raise Sophie, trusting him completely.

At six, the front door opened. Kolson walked in holding two paper bags of warm takeout.

"Hey, honey," he called out, kissing my cheek. "How’s our girl? Did Sophie practice her lines for the school play?"

"She’s in her room," I said quietly.

I looked at him. His tie was slightly loosened, his smile warm and easy. But for the first time in ten years, I didn't see my husband. I saw a stranger putting on a show.

I waited until two in the morning. Kolson was fast asleep beside me, his breathing heavy and even.

I slipped out from under the covers, picked up his phone from the nightstand, and unlocked it with Sophie’s birthday. I scrolled past his emails to a fake calculator app tucked inside a utility folder.

Inside was a hidden messaging thread.

The name at the top read *Rory Cruz*.

*Thank you for covering the rent this month,* one message said.

Beneath it were explicit pictures of a girl who couldn't have been older than twenty-two, followed by hotel room numbers and flight confirmations. My hands began to shake, but I kept tapping.

In another encrypted folder, I found a financial ledger.

It wasn't just Rory.

There were wire confirmations and recurring transfers to twenty-six different young women. Some had student IDs attached. A few looked barely legal. The money was funneled out every month like regular payroll.

This was not a simple affair. It was an entire operation.

A wave of nausea hit me so hard I almost dropped the phone. I took screenshots of every single file and emailed them to a private account. Then, I pulled the leather-bound journal my father gave me from the bottom of my nightstand. With a quiet pen, I wrote down every bank name, wire amount, and alias.

I set the phone back where I found it and climbed into bed. The sheets felt freezing. Beside me, Kolson shifted and threw an arm over my waist. I stared into the dark, listening to the man beside me breathe, wondering who I had been sharing my bed with for ten years.

The next morning, I kept my face blank.

I packed Sophie’s lunch, zipped her winter coat, and kissed Kolson goodbye at the door.

"Have a good day at the office, sweetheart," he smiled.

"You too," I said. My voice did not shake.

By ten, I was in a private downtown office with a forensic accountant named Claire. I used the excuse of an internal review for Matthews & Associates.

Claire scrolled through the statements I had copied down. After twenty minutes, her face lost all its color.

"Jolie," she whispered, taking off her glasses. "This isn't standard company overhead. Kolson is moving hundreds of thousands of dollars through offshore shell entities. It’s systematic embezzlement."

"Can you trace where the money ends up?" I asked.

"Most of it routes into anonymous pre-paid cards," she said quietly.

I pressed my fingers against my father's old watch on my wrist. The cool metal steadied me. I opened my journal and wrote down every shell company Claire flagged. I wasn't just grieving anymore. I was collecting ammunition.

By Thursday afternoon, I found Rory Cruz.

She was a graduate student. I tracked her to a small, crowded coffee shop near Columbia’s campus. When she sat down at the small wooden table across from me, she looked exhausted. Her coat was thin, and dark circles ringed her eyes.

"Who are you?" she asked, clutching her paper cup.

"My name is Jolie Matthews," I said evenly. "I’m Kolson Pierce’s wife."

Rory froze. The color drained from her cheeks in seconds.

I reached into my bag and slid a printed document across the table. It was a wire transfer receipt for her apartment rent, paid from one of Kolson's hidden accounts.

"I know about the money," I said, keeping my voice low and steady. "I know about the other twenty-five women, too. You can tell me the truth right now, or I walk this file into the nearest police precinct."

Rory stared at the paper. Her chest heaved, and tears sprang into her eyes.

"I... I need to use the restroom," she stammered.

She pushed back her chair and practically ran toward the hallway in the back.

I stayed in the booth and watched through the open hallway door. Rory didn't go into the bathroom. She pressed herself against the wall, yanked her phone from her pocket, and dialed with shaking hands.

She put the phone to her ear and started crying.

"Kolson," she sobbed into the receiver. "Your wife knows. She knows everything."
