Chapter 2

Once I started packing my things, I noticed something precious missing. My jewelry box was there, but the necklace my mother had left me—a simple, delicate pearl necklace—was gone. I confronted Adam in the living room, my voice shaking.

“Where’s my mother’s necklace, Adam?”

He glanced at Louise, who was sipping water, her expression innocent. When she saw me, she clutched her throat dramatically, coughing as if in distress. Adam rolled his eyes in annoyance and barked at me. “Claire, why are you yelling? It’s just a necklace. What’s the big deal?”

I looked into his eyes, searching for a trace of the man I used to know. “That necklace means everything to me, Adam,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “It was my mother’s.”

“Oh, that?” he said, almost casually. “Lost it somewhere. I don’t know where. Maybe I threw it out by accident.”

My heart froze. The necklace was the last piece of my mother I had and he’d discarded it like trash.

“I’m sorry, Claire.” Louise spoke up softly. She walked over to me, her voice sweet as honey, but her eyes taunting. “I was the one who… well, I borrowed it, just to look. I’m so clumsy—I didn’t realize how valuable it was to you, or I’d have been more careful. Please, don’t blame Adam.”

She gave me a small, smug smile and I could almost hear her silent words, “Garbage.”

I snapped. Rage overtook me and I lunged forward, grabbing her by the shoulders. “You had no right! It was my mother’s! How dare you!”

“Claire!” Adam’s voice was filled with fury as he yanked me back, pushing me away from Louise. “It’s just a piece of jewelry. Calm down, or I’ll make sure you regret this.”

Pain shot through my back as I hit the corner of the table. My vision blurred, but I managed to stand up, swallowing back the tears. Then Louise, with a tiny sob, knelt before me, her face crumbling in fake remorse.

“Claire, I didn’t realize it was so important,” she whimpered. “I’m sorry! I thought it was a mall giveaway or something. Please, I didn’t mean to cause a fight. It’s just a necklace.”

Just a necklace? A broken sob escaped me as I staggered back. The grief, the loss, the betrayal—it was all too much. In a fit of anguish, I grabbed the teapot from the table and poured the remaining, cooled tea over her head.

“Claire!” Adam shouted, his voice seething with anger. He pulled her away, slapping me hard across the face. “What’s wrong with you? This tea could’ve been hot! Are you trying to ruin her?”

My cheek stung from his slap, but the pain barely registered. I looked up at him, a hollow laugh bubbling up from somewhere deep inside me. “That necklace was my mother’s legacy, Adam. How dare you throw it away? How dare you?”

But he only sneered, his voice icy. “Oh, please, Claire. You’ve lied about your mom’s illness for years. You’ll do anything for pity, won’t you?”

As I stood there, absorbing his words, I realized that I was staring at a stranger. Whatever I’d thought we shared—it was gone. And I wasn’t sure it had ever truly been there to begin with.

Chapter 3

“Claire, you’ve been stewing on this for days. Haven't you come to your senses yet?” Adam’s voice was cold, his eyes hard as he looked down at me. “Either you apologize to Louise right now, or I'll have someone cut off your mother’s medical bills. Make your choice.”

So it was true. He’d never trusted me from the start. Every promise, every “I love you” he’d whispered was just empty noise. No matter how many times I explained or waited, hoping he’d come around, he would always take her side.

The most painful part was that he never even bothered to investigate, to see the truth for himself. He trusted Louise blindly, certain that my mom and I were just scheming for money. How ironic.

Slowly, I stood, wiping the blood from my nose and looked him square in the eyes. “Adam, let’s divorce.”

The large, pristine living room fell into a stunned silence. Finally, after a long pause, his voice echoed in disbelief, “What did you just say?”

“I said, let’s divorce.” My voice was calm, empty, as though I were reciting a simple fact. “After that, you can be with Louise. It’s clear you can’t stand the thought of her being a ‘mistress’ any longer, right?”

“Claire, watch what you say!” His face flushed with anger. “I’ve always treated Louise like a sister. Don’t project your filthy suspicions onto us!”

“Whatever you say.” I grabbed the few bags I had packed earlier and made my way to the door. “I’ll have my lawyer send you the divorce papers.”

“Claire! How dare you!” Adam’s voice rose in fury. He stormed over and grabbed my arm, his grip bruising. “What’s gotten into you? Don’t you understand anything? You want money, don’t you? Just have your mom give you another necklace. But divorce? Are you insane?”

I looked down at his hand, nausea rising in my throat. I pushed his hand off me, shuddering with disgust. He released me, confusion and a hint of hope flashing across his face. “Claire, are you… pregnant? Why didn’t you say something earlier?”

From behind him, Louise’s face changed, her delicate features twisting with a forced innocence as she placed a hand on Adam’s shoulder. “Adam,” she cooed, “if she’s pregnant, she should go to a reputable hospital for a proper checkup. Better safe than sorry.”

Her words seemed to shake Adam and his gaze hardened. “Claire, don’t try to manipulate me. I’ll forget your outburst if you apologize to Louise. Sincerely. Do that and all of this can be forgiven.”

“What do you mean by ‘sincerely’?” I glanced at Louise, a wry laugh escaping my lips. “Do you mean you want me to kneel down and beg her forgiveness again?”

“Can you not be so difficult?” Adam scowled, his tone patronizing. “If you hadn’t behaved so outrageously last time, I wouldn’t have asked you to kneel. It was meant to teach you a lesson.”

“Say whatever you like.” I felt the last of my patience drain away. “The biggest mistake I ever made was choosing to marry you.” Without waiting for his response, I turned and left.

Adam seemed to hesitate, as though he wanted to follow me, but Louise clung to him, her hand firm on his arm. I didn’t look back.

Outside the house, his number flashed on my phone and I picked up, my voice exhausted. “What do you want, Adam?”

His voice dripped with irritation. “All I’m asking is for you to apologize to Louise. Is that really so hard for you? What’s gotten into you, daring to talk about divorce?”

For three years, I had only known his accusations, his commands. There was no room for my voice in this marriage. But I was done.

“Not a chance,” I replied coldly. “I’ll apologize the day Louise gets on her knees at my mother’s grave and begs forgiveness. You both owe my mother—you stole her necklace, her peace. Aren’t you even a little afraid of karma?”

Adam scoffed. “Enough with your theatrics, Claire. How many times do I have to remind you that your mother’s health and hospital bills are on the line? Or maybe you’d rather tempt fate?”

“Don’t threaten me, Adam. You’ve already crossed every line.” I hung up, cutting him off mid-sentence and blocked his number. For the first time in years, the silence felt like freedom.

Chapter 4

My mother had passed away early the next morning.

She had fought so hard, holding onto life and I knew she’d done it just for me. I’d arranged everything alone, not telling a soul. When I pushed her casket into the crematorium, a flood of tears spilled over. She had been so full of life, yet here I was, left with a small urn of ashes.

All I could remember was her last, fading words, “I just want you to be happy, Claire… please, be happy…”

Leaving the funeral home with my mother’s ashes held tightly in my arms, I barely made it a few steps when Adam appeared in front of me, furious and shouting.

“Claire, what did you say to Louise?” He was livid, his eyes flashing with rage. “I’ve told you over and over, she’s like a sister to me, but you just can’t let it go, can you? What the hell do you want?”

I clutched the urn closer, trying to steady my shaking voice. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Adam. Now, if you’ll excuse me—”

“Stop pretending! After what you said, Louise has been so upset, she tried to… she almost…!” His voice trembled, his face twisting in anger. “If anything happens to her, I swear, I’ll make you pay for it, Claire. And your mother.”

I stared at him, a dark laugh bubbling up despite the pain. “How do you plan to make me pay, Adam?”

He scoffed, looking at the urn in my arms with disgust. “Simple. I’ll stop paying your mother’s medical bills. You can beg all you want, but I won’t spend another cent on her. It’s pathetic—Louise was right. Poor people like you are just obsessed with money. You’d do anything for it.”

“Maybe so,” I replied, my voice filled with fury, tears blurring my vision. “But you don’t get to stand in my way. Move.”

He sneered and stepped closer, yanking the urn from my hands and throwing it to the ground with a crash. “Let’s see you pretend now!”

The urn shattered, fragments of porcelain scattering across the ground, my mother’s ashes spilling into the dust. My mind froze and for a split second, the world went silent.

“You want an apology, Claire?” Adam mocked, his eyes cold. “Then say it.”

A red haze filled my vision. I lunged at him, my hands wrapping around his neck as I hissed, “You—you’re a monster. I swear, one day, you’ll pay for this.”

Adam seemed stunned by my fury, but his shock quickly turned to anger. He shoved me away, hard, kicking me in the stomach. Pain shot through my body as I crumpled to the ground, blood trickling down my leg.

With another curse, he pulled out his phone, calling his lawyer. “Cancel all of Claire’s mother’s medical bills. Let them suffer.” He paused, listening and then his expression twisted.

“Wait—what do you mean she…?” His voice faltered. “They already notified me?”

The line was silent. I lay on the ground, watching him, my body throbbing in pain, yet a strange calm washed over me.

He looked at me, his gaze falling to the blood pooling beneath me. Panic flickered in his eyes as he stammered, “Claire… are you…?” He reached out hesitantly.
