Chapter 1 of My Husband Stole Our Money for His Pregnant Mistress

Emmett called at 7:14 PM.

I know because I was standing at the kitchen counter cutting apple slices for Trip, and I looked at the clock when his name lit up my phone. Seven years of marriage, one son, one company, and I still noticed the exact time he called. That's the kind of woman I was.

"Hey." His voice came through warm and a little tired. "Snowstorm's a mess out here. O'Hare's a nightmare. I don't think I'm getting out tonight."

"I figured," I said.

"I'm sorry, Val. I wanted to be there for Thanksgiving."

I set the knife down. "It's fine. Trip and I are heading to my parents' tomorrow morning."

"Tell your dad I said happy Thanksgiving." A pause. "I'll call Trip before bed, okay?"

"He'd like that."

A minute later, a photo came through. The Chicago skyline at dusk. Gray clouds, the lake in the background, city lights just starting to bloom. Beautiful.

I texted back a single heart.

I didn't think twice about it. That's what ten years does to you. It smooths everything over until you stop asking questions.

---

Trip and I had a routine.

Every night, we ate dinner at the kitchen table with the TV on low in the background. Local news, usually. He liked watching the weather map. I liked the noise. After dinner we'd migrate to the couch, and he'd lean against me while I pulled a throw blanket over us, and we'd sit there together in that specific kind of quiet that only exists between a mother and her child.

He was seven. He smelled like soap and crayon wax. His head barely reached my shoulder.

The news anchor was talking about a story at Puget Sound. Something about a rescue. I wasn't really listening. I was thinking about whether I'd packed enough of Trip's clothes for Portland, whether I'd remembered his inhaler.

Then Trip's head came up.

"That's Daddy."

My eyes went to the screen.

Shaky tourist footage. A dock at the water's edge, gray November light, a small crowd gathered back from the railing. And in the center of the frame, a soaking-wet man pulling himself upright, arm wrapped around a woman in wet clothes. He was turned slightly away from the camera but I knew the set of his shoulders. I knew the jacket. I'd bought him that jacket two Christmases ago.

The anchor's voice continued. "—identified as Emmett Sullivan, a Seattle tech entrepreneur who happened to be walking along the waterfront when he spotted the woman struggling in the water. The woman, Capri Lynch, is reportedly in stable condition—"

I didn't move.

Trip looked up at me. "Mom? Is Daddy in Seattle?"

"I'm not sure, baby." My voice came out perfectly even. "Let me just watch for a second."

On the screen, Emmett turned slightly toward the camera. Just enough. He was smiling. That specific smile I had not seen in a very long time. He had his hand resting on the small of her back. Not the grip of a stranger who had just pulled someone from the water. Something else entirely.

I picked up the remote and turned off the TV.

"Time for bed," I said.

---

I read him two books instead of one. He fell asleep during the second. I sat beside his bed for a while longer than necessary, watching his chest rise and fall, listening to the particular silence of a sleeping child.

Then I sat down in his doorway with my back against the frame and I let myself feel it.

My hands shook. My chest did something I don't have a word for—not breaking exactly, more like the floor dropping out from under everything I thought was solid. Ten years of believing something completely. Ten years of building a life with someone I thought I knew.

I gave myself ten minutes.

I know because I watched the clock on my phone.

At minute eleven, I opened the notes app and started writing. The dock location. The name. Capri Lynch. The hand on her back. The smile. The jacket. The Chicago photo he had sent me forty minutes before his face appeared on my television in Seattle.

I wrote it all down.

Then I got up, checked on Trip one more time, and went to finish packing his bag for Portland.

---

The drive down was quiet. Trip slept most of the way with his head against the window. I kept the radio off.

Emmett called twice. I answered both times. My voice was warm. I gave him nothing.

My father met us at the door. He looked at me the way he sometimes did—still, measuring, like he was reading something behind my eyes. I smiled and hugged him and asked about the turkey.

That night, after the house went quiet, I sat on the edge of my childhood bed with my phone in my hands.

I opened Instagram.

I typed two words into the search bar.

Capri Lynch.
