Chapter 1 of My Husband Sterilized Me for His Mistress’s Son

The smell of bleach woke me first. Then came the pain. It was a dull, burning ache low in my belly, throbbing under layers of tight bandages.

I opened my eyes to a bright, sterile hospital room in Manhattan.

Westin was right there beside my bed. His hair was neat, his jaw freshly shaved, just like when he went on air for the evening news. He held my hand between both of his. His palms were warm. He looked at me with those soft, devoted brown eyes that had swept me off my feet five years ago.

"Hey, beautiful," he whispered. He squeezed my fingers. "You're awake. The doctor said everything went perfectly."

I swallowed against the dryness in my throat. "Westin..."

"Don't talk yet," he said gently. He leaned over and brushed a strand of hair from my forehead. "You did so well. You were so brave. We're going to have the most wonderful, simple life together. Just you and me. Exactly like we planned."

I tried to smile. I had done this for him. He had convinced me that a childfree life was true freedom. To prove I was all in, I let a surgeon remove my womb. I gave up motherhood to make him happy.

Then, a voice sliced right through my skull.

*It's done. She'll never have children. Dior's son is all that matters now. Once she agrees to adopt him, the trust fund is ours.*

I blinked. Westin’s lips hadn't moved. His smile remained tender. He was just looking at me.

*Dior's son?*

My aunt Dior? My mother's younger sister?

My blood turned to slush. The monitor beside my bed gave a sudden, rapid beep.

"Take it easy, Scarlet," Westin said, rubbing my knuckles. "You need rest."

His phone vibrated in his jacket pocket. He glanced at the screen, and his jaw tightened just a fraction. "I have to take this call from the network. Be right back, okay?"

He let go of my hand and stepped out into the hallway.

Before I could breathe, the door swung open again.

My mother, Julia, walked in. She wore a tailored beige coat and smelled of expensive perfume. She carried a vase of white lilies.

"Oh, my poor baby," Julia said, hurrying to my bedside. She set the flowers on the table and reached for me.

Instinctively, I reached back. She was my mother. I needed her to tell me I was having a bad dream. I needed her arms.

Julia leaned down and pressed a kiss to my temple.

*If she adopts the child, I can push for a revised trust allocation. Dior promised me twenty percent. Stupid girl — she trusts everyone.*

I froze.

The voice was clear as a bell. It had Julia’s crisp, polished cadence. But her lips were still against my skin.

Julia pulled back, smoothing my blanket. "I'm so proud of you, darling. You made a very mature choice."

I stared at her face. The perfect eyeliner. The polite, maternal curve of her mouth.

I pulled my hand back slowly. I tucked it under the sheet.

"Thanks, Mom," I said. My voice sounded flat, even to me.

"Get some sleep," she said, tapping my shoulder. "I'll go check on Westin."

She walked out, clicking her heels on the linoleum floor.

That night, the room was dark. The city lights cast long, gray bars across the ceiling.

I lay completely still on my back. I didn't cry. Not a single tear slipped down my face. Crying belonged to the girl who walked into this hospital yesterday. That girl was dead.

I took inventory.

My womb was gone. I was sterilized.

My husband was sleeping with my aunt Dior. They had a baby together.

And my own mother was in on it, waiting to carve up my fifteen-million-dollar trust fund like a Thanksgiving turkey.

Slowly, I slid my right hand under the gown. I pressed my fingertips against the rough gauze on my lower abdomen. The sharp sting anchored me. They thought I was a fool. They thought I was their golden goose.

The next morning, I discharged myself early against the doctor's orders.

I called Westin and Julia. I kept my tone weak and frail. I told them the apartment was too noisy with street traffic and that I had booked a private recovery clinic in Midtown for two weeks of quiet bed rest. They bought it instantly. Westin even praised me for taking care of myself.

My private suite at the recovery clinic had soft carpet and large windows. The first thing I did was ask the nurse for a plain black notebook and a pen.

I sat at the small writing desk, opened to the first page, and wrote:

*What I know.*

*What they don't know I know.*

*What I will do.*

For the next two weeks, I practiced.

I walked the quiet clinic hallways in my slippers. I sat in the sunlit garden lounge with the other wealthy patients. Whenever someone passed, I opened my mind and listened.

*I hate this shift. My feet hurt,* a young nurse thought as she rolled a cart past me.

*He's going to write me out of the will if I don't visit more often,* a man in an expensive suit thought as he walked to his father's room.

I mapped out the rules.

I had to be within fifteen feet. If the person had strong emotions—greed, rage, panic—their thoughts came in loud and sharp. If they were calm, it was just a faint whisper.

Most importantly, I learned to keep my face totally blank. I learned not to flinch.

When the nurses brought my morning coffee with sugar, the way Westin liked it, I poured it out. I asked for it black. Bitter and plain.

By the end of the second week, my physical wounds had begun to close into a thin, pink scar.

I packed my bag and looked in the mirror. My eyes were clear. My hands didn't shake.

They thought they had trapped me. But I was finally ready to go home.
