Chapter 1 of My Husband Sold Our House to Bail His Mistress

The rooftop glittered like something out of a pitch deck.

Nexora Technologies had rented the entire forty-second floor of the Cascade Tower for the Series C celebration, and whoever handled the event budget had not been shy about it. String lights ran the length of the terrace. Champagne came in actual crystal. The Seattle skyline pressed against the glass on every side, all lit up and indifferent, doing what skylines do.

I'd spent eleven months building the infrastructure that made this night possible. The algorithm suite. The data pipeline architecture. The security framework that kept our IP locked down tight enough to survive three separate penetration tests. Raymond Holt, our CEO, had shaken my hand at the door and said, 'Emory, this is your night.' He meant it. I believed him.

I was wearing the navy dress I'd bought for exactly this occasion. My hair was up. I had a glass of champagne I wasn't drinking and a smile I'd calibrated to the room.

Spencer was already there when I arrived. He'd said he'd meet me at the entrance. He hadn't.

I spotted him near the bar, his jacket already loosened, laughing at something with his head thrown back. That particular laugh. The one he saved for people he was trying to impress.

I knew who was at that table without looking.

Leilany Oliver had joined my team eight months ago. Technically sharp enough to be useful, socially fluent in the way that made certain men in the office feel very smart for noticing her. She reported to me. She smiled at me every morning with a warmth that I had spent eight months accepting at face value, because that is the kind of person I had trained myself to be.

I turned back to the investor I was speaking with and kept talking.

The knot in my chest had been there for weeks. I'd been calling it stress.

During cocktail hour, I was mid-conversation with two board members when I heard her voice behind me.

'Emory.' Leilany materialized at my elbow, champagne in hand, smile fully deployed. 'You look great. Very—put together.'

'Thank you,' I said.

She tilted her head. There were four people watching. She knew exactly how many. 'I was just saying to Marcus that it must be so hard, keeping up a marriage when you work this much.' A small, sympathetic pause. 'Spencer mentioned you two are like roommates at this point. More than anything else.'

The words dropped into the conversation like a stone into still water.

Somebody's glass clinked somewhere across the terrace. The wind off the sound moved through the string lights.

I looked at her. Her smile was perfectly calibrated—concerned, not cruel. Completely deniable.

Something behind my eyes went very still.

'Excuse me,' I said. 'I need to check something with the AV team.'

The booth was at the far end of the terrace, staffed by a kid in a headset who did not ask questions when I said I needed to connect my phone for a presentation. I had the cable in my hand before he finished nodding.

My hands were steady. I noticed that.

I opened the folder I had been quietly assembling for three weeks. Leilany's performance reports—the real ones, alongside the inflated versions she'd been submitting. Timestamped hotel check-in records. Fourteen separate occasions. The first one was a Tuesday I remembered clearly because I'd worked until midnight and come home to find Spencer already asleep.

A credit card receipt for lingerie. His card.

And a screenshot of a text message. Her name at the top. The words: *She's at work again. Come over.*

I hit project.

The display behind the makeshift podium was nine feet wide.

The room went silent the way rooms do when something has happened that no one has language for yet.

I was disconnecting the cable when Spencer grabbed my arm.

He pulled me into the hallway with the focused energy of a man who had decided someone else was the problem. His face was red. His breath smelled like three drinks.

'What the hell is wrong with you?' His voice was low and furious. 'You just humiliated an innocent woman in front of the entire company—'

'Spencer.'

'—Leilany has nothing to do with whatever paranoid story you've built in your head, and you just stood up there and—'

'Spencer.' I looked at his hand on my arm. Then I looked at his face. I took my time with it. 'Let go of me. That's the last time you touch me.'

Something in my voice made him release his grip.

I walked to the elevator. I pressed the button. I did not look back.

---

The parking garage was quiet. My car was on level three. I sat in the driver's seat, and I set a timer on my phone for four minutes, and I let myself fall apart—quietly, completely, with my forehead against the steering wheel.

When the timer went off, I sat up. I wiped my face. I opened my laptop on the passenger seat.

I created a new folder. I labeled it CASE.

I had been logging anomalous server activity for weeks. Unauthorized access to our highest-clearance database, routed through credentials that belonged to Leilany Oliver, at hours when only I was supposed to be working.

I had said nothing. I had been waiting to be sure.

I was sure now.

The personal and the professional had just collapsed into each other, and somewhere in the wreckage was everything I needed.

I started building.
